Clay McLeod Chapman doesn't just write horror, he performs it in The Pumpkin Pie Show, an immersive storytelling experience that recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. If you haven't had the pleasure of seeing Chapman perform (which our own Daily Dead Editor-in-Chief Jonathan James experienced at The Overlook Film Festival), you can certainly read his work anytime in a number of books, including his new short story collection, Nothing Untoward: Stories from The Pumpkin Pie Show. To celebrate the release of his new collection, we caught up with Chapman for our latest Q&A feature to discuss his literary influences, twenty years of The Pumpkin Pie Show, writing The Tribe trilogy for Disney press, and his upcoming Marvel project that he describes as "a love story between Deadpool and Venom."
What authors and storytellers were you drawn to in your formative years that influenced your own writing and performing?

Set in the hip universe of craft beer and fixed-gear bikes, Drinking Beers is the relationship study of two work friends, Kate (Olivia Wilde) and Luke (Jake Johnson), whose bonding challenges the concept of a platonic pairing. This relationship is witnessed by their own respective dating partners, like Kate’s shady boyfriend Chris (Ron Livingston) and Luke’s uncertain longtime girlfriend Jill (Anna Kendrick). The film is written, edited, and directed by Chicago’s Joe Swanberg.
Swanberg has 17 feature film credits as a director on his IMDb page, and he hasn’t even been directing for a decade. While he helmed cult favorites like Hannah Takes the Stairs and Nights and Weekends (both of which starred Greta Gerwig), his biggest project yet is Drinking Buddies, a film that uses his trademark “mumblecore” storytelling style of heavy dialogue and natural settings but with marquee stars like Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick,...

In the 1970 comedy Where's Poppa?, George Segal's every attempt to find a romantic partner is sabotaged with senile maliciousness by his screen mom Ruth Gordon, whose needs preclude finding a romantic partner. It's cinema's ultimate Jewish mother joke about a son whose sexual instincts are incestuously redirected back into the family. Late bloomer Gianni di Gregorio repressed all such lusty urges in his directorial debut Mid-August Lunch, re-enacting his years of maternal care for a woman not ashamed to wheedle to get the care she needs.
The Salt of Life dreams of the future rather than brooding over the past, with all those previously unmentioned desires gushing out. Once again, "Gianni" (di Gregorio himself) is front and center and his mother (Valeria de Franciscis) is still a financial and emotional black hole. Too Late Short Film. Rani Naamani‘s Too Late (2011) short film stars Nelson Brown. Too Late plot synopsis: “A victim of an attack returns home to work on the wound but the injury turns out to be more than he expected.”

Once again, the Horrible Imaginings Horror Film Festival of San Diego will extend the Halloween season with two days of short films, features, door prizes, and a haunted art gallery. This year's event, which takes place November 4th and 5th, will be bigger and better than last--and scarier, too!
From the Press Release:
Last year saw the inception of San Diego’s first film festival dedicated to macabre cinema and art. The response from the audience and the neighborhood was so overwhelmingly positive that a second year became a certainty. On November 4th and 5th, 2011, that second year will become a reality, and it will be bigger and better than before!
Horrible Imaginings Film Festival has grown to two days of film and art, including 25 short films, 2 animated shorts, 2 music videos and 4 feature films, as well as a haunted gallery of dark or macabre art. The 10th Avenue Theatre and...

The Late Bloomer Short Film has premiered. Craig Macneill‘s Late Bloomer (2004) stars Sam Borenzweig, Lauren Bond, Danicah Waldo, Courtney Merritt, and Godfrey Pflager. Late Bloomer‘s plot synopsis: “a short film about 7th grade sex ed class gone horribly wrong. Loosely based on the dark tales of H.P. Lovecraft.” Baaahhhhh. This short film is hilarious. The ending is outrageous (in a good way). The reveal is well-orchestrated: the students’ faces, the principal, etc. Late Bloomer was written Clay McLeod Chapman, produced Thom Litttle, and edited by Emily Williams. [1] Still bummed about the fact that Guillermo del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness is no longer happening [2]? Well, there's not much I can do about that... but perhaps today's Video of the Day will help ease your H.P. Lovecraft craving just a tiny bit. Craig Macneill's Late Bloomer isn't a Lovecraft adaptation per se, but it explicitly draws inspiration from the horror author's oeuvre to tell the tale of one "seventh grade sex ed class gone horribly wrong." The funny short film played at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, and is now available in its entirety online. A note of warning to our readers: Late Bloomer isn't technically Nsfw -- you don't see anything more explicit than you would in a basic junior high school health textbook, and the terms used are more euphemistic or clinical than outright filthy -- but I doubt even the most relaxed boss...

No, the best way to close out your 8+ hours of pretending to work (what do you do around here anyway?) is to spend another thirteen minutes pretending to work but really watching Late Bloomer, a short film about sex education loosely based on the work of H.P. Lovecraft. The movie was apparently an official selection at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, but it was only recently uploaded to YouTube and is currently taking off in Ye Olde Blogosphere. It revolves around seventh-grade sex-ed class, taught by one Ms. Lovecraft, that doesn't go as planned. Seriously, [...]...

Insidious screenwriter Leigh Whannell has written a script about a zombie epidemic in an elementary school called “Cooties,” and he enjoys doing impressions of Rodney Dangerfield. James Wan, director of Insidious, jumped to the chance to tell my recording device that “Trojan War is one of my favorite teen romantic comedies, next to Can’t Hardly Wait.” Hold on, am I talking to a comedic duo, or the two guys who came up with the “Razor Wire Maze Trap” in the first Saw movie?
The horror duo believes that setting up a scare is just like setting up a gag, and this idea is certainly tested by the funnymen in their latest film, Insidious. Produced by Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli, the film is about a young boy in a coma whose vacant soul leads to his house and family being haunted.

When a musician has a voice and style as immediately identifiable as singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith, the producer often has a bigger hand than usual in making sure that any given album isn’t “just another Ron Sexsmith record.” For Long Player Late Bloomer, Sexsmith works with fellow Canadian Bob Rock—best known for producing some of the biggest albums by Metallica, The Cult, and Mötley Crüe—and the result is Sexsmith’s most polished, poppy record since 2004‘s Retriever. Super and the Crimson Bolt, nuggets of facts from Guillermo del Toro, and comic treats from Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg and Eva Mendes, all at the second day of Comic-Con

The concept, look and tone of Super, a new superhero movie which had its presentation at Comic-Con, reminded me of something but I can't think what. See if it rings any bells for you. It's about an ordinary shlub (Rainn Wilson, aka Dwight from the Us version of The Office) who decides to become a superhero called Crimson Bolt, complete with crummy homemade costume. He fights back against the neighbourhood crooks, drug dealers and miscreants; he has no powers, but he does have some ordinary household tools and a cute but humorously foul-mouthed teenage sidekick (Juno's Ellen Page).

Every year, elated but harried attendants of the New York Asian Film Festival look over the typically packed slate of features and just don't know where to start. Most press coverage of the festival seeks to help in that process. As a result, when the dust has settled and the festival has ended, many times viewers such as myself can't help but compare what they'd read about featured titles with what they actually saw. Naturally the biggest source of hype for the little grassroots festival that could is the programmers' description of the films. And I have to say, as usual, the festival really has outdone themselves in being both insanely effusive and weirdly accurate in their descriptions.
Perfect example: at the festival's website, Doman Seman, the new film by Go Shibata, whose Late Bloomer was showcased at the 2005 Nyaff, is heralded thusly: "Imagine A Hard Day's Night if it...

Japanese indie director Go Shibata is certainly turning heads as of late with his previous film Late Bloomer. Earlier this week we learned that regular Lost director Jack Bender would be finally stepping away from the small screen into features now that the show is over. Following in his footsteps is another long-time TV director looking to spread his wings with 90 pages rather than 30. Randall Einhorn has signed on to direct Late Bloomer for Alcon Entertainment, according to Deadline. Anyone who watches Thursday night comedy on NBC has seen the name pop up in the credits for The Office and Parks and Recreation, as well as ABC's hilarious Modern Family and FX's It's Always Sunny. Apparently his reputation was so good on all of these shows that the actors called Alcon Entertainment to recommend they hire him. Bloomer is the odd true story of a man who did not reach puberty until the age of 27 thanks to a rare disorder. That idea promises all kinds of zany hijinks...

Warner Bros has released its 2011 schedule already, in case you’re interested in perusing their fifteen picks.
Unknown White Male – January 7, 2011: Liam Neeson wakes up from a coma to discover someone has stolen his identity.
The Factory – no longer scheduled for January 28, 2011: John Cusack stars as a cop in a crime thriller about a serial killer on the streets of Buffalo, New York. I’m surprised this is off the schedule because it was set for the same final weekend in January like 2009’s Taken or 2010’s Edge of Darkness, both about fighting for their daughters.
The Rite – January 28, 2011: Instead, WB has scheduled this film about exorcisms starring Anthony Hopkins.
Hall Pass – February 25, 2011: A comedy about two couples given a “pass” to engage in an extramarital affair. It’s a star-studded movie including Owen Wilson, Christina Applegate, Alyssa Milano, Richard Jenkins, and the lovely Jenna Fischer of “The Office.

Warner Bros. Pictures continued to expand its 2011 schedule with a set of surprise release date announcements this evening that included three high profile sequels and new movies from Steven Soderbergh and Catherine Hardwicke. Despite The Final Destination being advertised as the last in the series, audiences will get at least one more chance to revel in gruesome 3D deaths when Final Destination 5 opens Aug. 26, 2011. Final Destination got the series off to a solid start in 2000, grossing $53.3 million. Subsequent entries Final Destination 2 and Final Destination 3 made $46.96 and $54.1 million, respectively. Opening at the end of August last year, The Final Destination, the first of the series to be in 3D, hit a series high of $66.5 million, so it should come as no surprise that Warner Bros. greenlit a fifth installment. Final Destination 5 is currently the only release scheduled for Aug. 26, 2011. Journey to the Center of the Earth 2 opens in 3D and IMAX on Sept.

Leave it to Hollywood to turn a sensitive look at gender into a broad comedy. Alcon Entertainment is hard at work on a new film called "Late Bloomer," based on the very true story of Ken Baker, who underwent puberty in a matter of three weeks after a tumor that was pressing against his pituitary gland was removed. Unlike most other men, Baker spent years living with an overabundance of the female hormone prolactin thanks to his malfunctioning pituitary gland. The side effects -- impotence, fat deposits on his breasts and hips, and milk excretion -- made him feel emasculated and forced him to look at the way that society, his friends, and even his own father -- who seemed to hate women and gays alike -- defined manhood and womanhood. Then, at age 27, his benign tumor was removed and in three weeks Baker experienced the puberty that most men experience over years.

Once you make a hit out of nowhere with The Blind Side, where do you go from there? To strange Tlc-like medical miracles, that's where. According to Variety, Alcon Entertainment is developing a new film called Late Bloomer, about a twenty-something man who is wrenched through the throes of puberty in just three weeks.
Based on the 2001 book Man Made: A Memoir, the film will tell the story of Ken Baker (currently a news editor at E! Entertainment), a man who had "a benign tumor that rested against his pituitary gland, which delayed his puberty and normal development, causing him frustration and embarrassment. At age 27, a successful operation to remove the tumor restored him to hormonally normal masculinity, but resulted in his experiencing all the effects of puberty over an extremely condensed three-week period." The Amazon review is a little more detailed: "But Baker had a tumor in his brain...

You might expect that Alcon Entertainment, the company that has enjoyed a big hit with triumph-over-adversity, based-on-truth, Sandra Bullock-starring pic The Blind Side, would adapt the tale of a man who experiences puberty in three weeks thanks to a weird medical condition into a stirring tale of hormones and humanity. You'd be wrong: they're going for the laughs.Late Bloomer will be adapted from Ken Baker's 2001 book Man Made: A Memoir, which chronicles his struggle with a tumor that squatted on his pituitary gland and delayed his puberty, leading to plenty of high school taunting.Things took another turn when a successful operation at age 27 saw him back to normal, but facing the prospect of experiencing all the usual effects and issues of puberty over a short three-week period. Ouch. Alcon nabbed the rights back in 2008 and apparently commissioned Gary Rosen to write a more dramatic script. But...

Another year has past, the time for closure is upon us again. I'm happy to repeat what I did last year. The following list of films is not the top pick of 2009-released films but rather the best films I've seen in 2009. It was not an easy pick, plenty of films didn't make the list, but the following films all deserve a little extra attention. Enjoy!
10. Bronson
I wasn't a big fan of Refn until I watched Bronson. It was everything his previous films promised they'd be. Refn shows us a very quirky character played by an undefeatable Hardy. The film is visually pretty cool and refreshing, has a very strange but fun choice in music and some very memorable scenes. It's a rather short film, delivering plenty of fun and cool scenes wrapped up tightly without ever boring the audience.

Late Bloomer is a film which simply defies easy description. It mixes social drama with cyberpunk aesthetics, throwing in a little slasher theme on the side. At it’s very core though, it is a film about one man, Sumida Masakiyo. He plays the role of his life, making it difficult for audiences to separate his acting performance from his character, resulting in some very disturbing and intense scenes. Director Shibata didn’t miss his one chance to make on hell of an impression with his first film.

The arrival of Late Bloomer in the mail was cause for celebration. As somebody who constantly seeks out unusual stories I found this movie not just interesting but intensely challenging. Late Bloomer tells the story of Sumida-san a man whose severe disability doesn’t keep him from pursuing a rock n roll lifestyle. Beer, porn, taking in his friends Punk shows all mitigate a wheelchair bound existence until he finds himself driven mad with jealousy when his beautiful new caretaker starts spending more time with his best friend. Embarking on a new life of undirected revenge he discovers how easy it is to use his disability to his advantage when he becomes a serial killer. The hand held camera style will turn off some and no doubt the nature of Shimida-sans disability will make some uncomfortable regardless of how good or bad they feel the film is.

He's disabled and only wants to hang out with his friends, just like anybody else. Beer, rock and roll, and women. But when his best friend steals his secret love, his everyday quest for normalcy launches him into a cold-blooded rampage of revenge.

Chicago's Facets Multi Media has teamed up with Fangoria to give 5 lucky readers a copy of their new DVD, Late Bloomer! In this "weird, wicked and wonderfully perverse" (The N.Y. Times) shocker from Japan (released today), we meet Sumida, a disabled young man marked by his wheelchair, his electronic voice box, his rampant alcoholism, and his appetite for porn. He is the object of pity among friends and the abject to most everyone else. When a female student temporarily becomes his caregiver for research purposes, he mistakes her harmless flirtation for true love. Her eventual rejection sends Sumida on a downward spiral in which his repressed rage erupts in outright revenge.

Film releases certainly aren't limited to theaters these days -- here's a rundown of titles making their way to you via alternative pathways.
On Demand
Our sister company IFC Films made a splash at this year's Sundance with the announcement of a partnership with the SXSW Film Festival to premiere four of the festival's picks concurrent with their debut in Austin. Joe Swanberg's latest, "Alexander the Last," headlines the group making their on demand debut on March 14, along with Australian comedy "Three Blind Mice," Bulgarian noir "Zift" and SXSW '08 alums "Medicine for Melancholy" and "Paper Covers Rock."
On DVD
It's a sign of the times that a serviceable Tommy Lee Jones thriller can sit alongside the latest from Steven Seagal at your local Blockbuster, but "In the Electric Mist" is far more interesting than the actor's paycheck output of the late '90s, even if it is missing...

It's been called “wonderfully perverse” and “one of the best films that has come out of Japan recently"; finally Go Shibata’s Late Bloomer will be hitting DVD via Bone House Asia on March 24th, the company announced today.
Curious? You know you are. Dig some official plot for Late Bloomer: He was disabled with Cerebral Palsy, but all he wanted was to hang out with his friends, just like anybody else. Beer, rock and roll, and women. But when his best friend steals his secret love, his everyday quest for normalcy launches him into a cold-blooded rampage of revenge.
Interesting twist; I have to say I can’t remember the last film to feature a handicapped killing people; usually they’re just overcoming the odds or, in the cast of Friday the 13th Part 2, getting thrown down the stairs.
The DVD will come with a greeting from Shibata-san,...

"The Insider" has the latest... Jennifer Aniston gets candid in the new issue of The New York Times Magazine! In the mag, out this Sunday, the former "Friend" reveals whether or not she'd ever be the type of celebrity to have their own MySpace for Facebook page. "It’s not for me," she admits. It's like dancing with the devil." But she reveals which sites she does frequent. "I have spent hours on FirstDibs.com, looking at furniture," she says. "And I like to play Scrabble. And poker. There's a great big meteor storm fulla goodtimes that's about to strike our fair city. Sure there are some meteorites I'm watching for less closely than others, but -- to continue my analogy beyond all reason -- the bulk of this impending assault has me running in circles with an enormous target on my head.
What I'm trying to say here is: I'm very happy about Fantastic Fest 2008.
Yes, for 2008, we've upped the ante on parties and crazy events, but the main reason for my incessant drooling is of course The Movies. Here are a few titles that I'm painfully impatient to ingest:
Let The Right One In - I've heard nothing but raging praise for this Swedish coming-of-age vampire romance. Apparently it boasts the best child actors since Night Of The Hunter. That's big talk. But even the haters I know swear up and down the block that this...

- Few people have the nerve to take an honest look in the mirror and see themselves for who they really are, even fewer have the nerve to share that view with the rest of the world. Amy Cohen, former writer/producer of the hit sitcoms Caroline in the City and Spin City not only had the nerve, but the skill needed to bring her life to the page and now to the big screen in an upcoming Picturehouse Films production based on her memoir The Late Bloomer’s Revolution.
