Austin Winsberg got used to traveling from his California based writers’ room for “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” to its Canadian set during the first sea – son of the NBC musical comedy. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, though, he found himself having to primarily be in one place — his home office, which he calls “command central.” There, he ran a remote room and multitasked to keep an eye on production needs, including collaborating with producer and choreographer Mandy Moore on the various heart song sequences.
“I literally had four monitors going at all times,” he says. “My iPad had the feed to the set, one computer monitor had the writers’ room board on it, the other computer monitor had Zoom, and then my phone was for all of my emails and all of the other stuff I had to answer at the same time.”

NBC has ordered a second season of musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist starring Jane Levy. We hear the order is for 13 episodes.
A co-production between Lionsgate TV and Universal TV, the series had been considered the strongest contender among NBC’s bubble shows this season. It has a passionate following and recently topped USA Today’s annual Save Our Shows poll with record support.
Of the other NBC bubble series, the network this week canceled Lincoln Rhyme: The Hunt for the Bone Collector and Perfect Harmony. Manifest is still very much in contention as NBC and producer Warner Bros. TV are discussing a deal, while Indebted is not expected to continue.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist has been a digital phenom with huge online/social media following whose very modest Live+Same Day linear ratings are dwarfed by its delayed multi-platform numbers. It is one of NBC’s strongest digital performers,...

Exclusive: Modern Family star Julie Bowen has been tapped as the lead in Raised By Wolves (fka Please Hold For Frankie Wolfe), CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot from Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan and Universal TV.
I hear CBS and Universal TV landed Bowen in a premium deal that would pay the two-time Emmy winner $250,000+ an episode.
Written and exec produced by Kohan and Mutchnick, Raised By Wolves centers on Frankie Wolfe (Bowen), a very successful and fiercely independent crisis manager whose world is turned upside down when she decides to let someone into her life for the first time—an 11-year-old girl who she adopts and raises with the occasional help of her fragile, nervous wreck of a sister.
Bowen’s Frankie is a totally put-together powerhouse whose aggressive, blunt-talking style belies the damage incurred by literally being raised by Wolfes (Barbara and Arnie).

NBC has handed pilot orders to two new dramas, the thriller “Emergence” from “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World” creators Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters, and the musical dramedy “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” directed and executive produced by Paul Feig.
“Emergence,” written and executive produced by Fazekas and Butters, is described by the network as “a character-driven genre thriller that centers around a sheriff who takes in a young child that she finds near the site of a mysterious accident who has no memory of what has happened. The investigation draws her into a conspiracy larger than she ever imagined, and the child’s identity is at the center of it all.”
Paul McGuigan, who also directed the pilot for “Kevin,” will serve as a director and executive producer on the ABC Studios project. Robert Atwood of the Fazekas & Butters production company, which is under an overall at ABC Studios, serves as producer.

The project, from Imagine TV and 20th TV, is based on Jen Lancaster’s upcoming book Tao Of Martha, which is in the vein of Julie And Julia, with domestic diva Stewart as a role model instead of cooking icon Julia Child. The Tao Of Martha centers on a highly disorganized, scattered former party girl who decides she needs to grow up after her husband leaves her because he can’t handle her chaotic lifestyle anymore. She decides to kill two birds with one stone: become a better role model for her daughter and write a new book about changing her life according to the “teachings” of Martha Stewart.

Bouncing around in well-received guest roles since the end of "ER" in 2009, it looks like John Stamos will soon have a brand new, permanent TV home. And he'll be the series lead, to boot.
Deadline reports that Stamos is attached to star in "Dead Lawyers," a series pitch that was picked up by Sony following its failed development, eight years ago, for the Syfy channel. Stamos would play, according to the site, "a hotshot defense attorney is run over by a bus and finds himself in his own version of hell: a law firm on earth composed of other dead lawyers, all trying to right miscarriages of justice in order to redeem themselves."
Stamos has led a series before, though without much success; his "Jake In Progress," in which he played a New York publicist, lasted just one season, 2005-2006. He also featured as lead in "Thieves," which lasted just 10 episodes in 2001.

The WB Network, which like ABC is set to reveal its 2005-06 season lineup to advertisers Tuesday in New York, was said to have firmed up most of its pickups during the weekend, as did Fox, which presents Thursday. The opening hour of primetime was something of a dead zone on Thursday Each of the Big Four networks took a ratings hit at 8 p.m., but nobody took more of a beating than NBC's Joey, which sank to its lowest levels yet for an original episode. In its first original airing after several weeks of repeats, Joey delivered a mere 7.4 million viewers and 2.9 rating/9 share in the adults 18-49 demographic -- a double-digit drop from its season average for original episodes, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. The peacock's fortunes improved a little bit at 8:30 p.m. with a fresh episode of Will & Grace (7.9 million, 3.3/10). CBS' Survivor: Palau (18.7 million, 6.4/19) won the hour as usual, but it also sank to its lowest ratings yet for the Palau installment. Fox's The O.C. (6.5 million, 3.1/9) was off its game, and even ABC's low-rated comedy Jake in Progress took a dip with its back-to-back originals averaging 4.5 million viewers and 1.5/4, which put ABC in fifth place behind the first hour of UPN's WWE SmackDown! CBS capped the night with a 10 p.m. repeat of Without a Trace (15.7 million, 4.8/13) that easily won the 10 p.m. hour against a repeat of NBC's ER (9.5 million, 4.3/12). ABC got off to a weak start at 8 p.m. with back-to-back episodes of fledgling comedy Jake in Progress, which averaged 5.3 million viewers and 1.5/4 in the key demo. NBC was better off with repeats of Joey (6.5 million, 2.8/8) and Will & Grace (6.9 million, 3.1/9) but perked up considerably at 9 p.m. with The Apprentice (13.3 million, 6.0/15). Fox was in its usual zone at 8 p.m. with an original episode of The O.C. (6.9 million, 2.9/9) but slipped at 9 p.m. with Tru Calling (4.2 million, 1.8/5).
CBS had the primetime playing field all to itself in virtually every hour of primetime Thursday. The only show that came close to competing with the eye network's powerhouse lineup was NBC's 9 p.m. edition of The Apprentice, which brought in 13.8 million viewers and 6.0 rating/15 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. CBS' opened the night far atop the pack with Survivor: Palau (21.1 million, 7.7/21). ABC's fledgling comedy Jake in Progress (5.7 million, 1.7/5) had an uphill climb with back-to-back episodes at 8 p.m. (5.7 million, 1.7/5) and 8:30 p.m. (5.8 million, 2.1/6), even against repeats of NBC's Joey (7.4 million, 2.9/8) and Will & Grace (7.1 million, 3.1/8).

Thursday night's primetime ratings were deflated by the absence of CBS' powerhouse regular lineup, which was tabled to make room for the eye network's coverage of the NCAA basketball championship series. An Apprentice clip show did reasonably well for NBC at 9 p.m., drawing 11.5 million viewers and 5.0 rating/13 share in adults 18-49 demographic to make it the night's most-watched program overall, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. Despite the lighter competition from CBS' basketball coverage, ABC struggled in the 8 p.m. hour with the regular time-slot debut of its John Stamos comedy Jake in Progress (7.2 million, 2.2/7). Fox was in it usual zone with The O.C. (7.5 million, 3.4/10). NBC won the hour in adults 18-49 but with a weak showing from an original episode of Will & Grace (8.5 million, 3.6/11) at 8 p.m. followed by a Will & Grace rerun (8.6 million, 3.7/10). NBC won the 10 p.m. hour with a repeat of ER (9.3 million, 4.0/11). CBS' 8-11 p.m. college hoops coverage put it in second place behind NBC for the night with an average of 9.5 million viewers and 3.5/10 in adults 18-49. NBC was No. 1 with 9.8 million viewers and 4.2/12 in the demo.

ABC's new comedy Jake in Progress got off to a fair-to-middling start Sunday in the time slot usually reserved for Desperate Housewives. NBC had little traction with the time-period debut of The Contender, and Fox didn't do much business with the premiere of Kelsey Grammer's The Sketch Show. The big mover of the night was NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent, which saw its viewership perk up significantly as it consistently has this season whenever Desperate Housewives is out of its way. ABC had no trouble winning the night on the strength of its 7-9 p.m. block of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which brought in an average of 14.3 million viewers and a 5.8 rating/15 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research.
