Woman meets blind man on a train
ian06 January 2006
My summary above sounds very mundane, but this encounter is anything but. Both actors are superb, and the film can be best described as hilarious yet chilling. The film opens with two women conversing in a car, while waiting outside a railway station. This may be to set the scene and give the viewer a better insight into their characters, but it really does not prepare you for the later scenes, which are incredibly ordinary but deeply unsettling (in a good way! This film is very powerful, and evokes strong emotions in the viewer). While it may seem unusual to have an actor with Brendan Gleeson's high profile appearing in a specialist interest short film that is 'as gaeilge' (in Irish), he was apparently an Irish teacher in the past. It is good to see that great entertainment can still be created without a dependency on expensive props and effects, all it needs is a good script, subtle camera-work and editing, and brilliant acting.

Had Brendan Gleeson fallen on hard times?

The single worst Irish language films I've seen so far.

If you want to watch something in Irish, have a look at "Yu Ming is ainm dom" it's so much more enjoyable.

Revenge?

I found this a very good film. As an Irish language student, my class and I watched this gearrscannán (short film) together. I can only speak for myself when i say that I found Gleesons acting to be great. This is a short film about a blind man and an angry woman who end up sitting together on a train. I particularly enjoyed the dialect of Irish which was used, It gave Irish learners an insight into the different dialects available in Ireland, as well as some useful phrases. I have only one criticism about this short film, and that is that there were English subtitles. In my opinion, this took away from the language and often i found myself focusing on the English, rather than listening to and understanding the Irish, However, I understand that the subtitles are necessary to beginners and English speakers. All in all, a great gearrscannán!

Cake ???

Warning: Spoilers
Why this movie is on the "Leaving Cert" for Irish School is a mystery. Maybe because it's in Gaelic ?? IDK. Anyway, Catherine must be abusing her mother I take it. If she won't let her use the toilet and kills an annoying man on a train, who else has she killed ?? We have all sat next to an idiot who doesn't stop talking, but I'm not gonna kill the dumbass. I'll just move to another seat. The train is empty, maybe 2 other people are there. So this Catherine could have just moved to some other empty seat, made up any excuse or just say,"STFU !!" Then the movie end with her just walking away. This movie is more of a student art film than anything else.

Excellent

Absolutely phenomenal. Takes place on a train carriage, where a blind athsmatic man meets a woman. Instead of helping him, she ends up toying with him. The film has brilliant acting, good characters, and builds up the tension nicely. We can really understand both characters point of view and relate to them. There is an excellent supporting cast too. The worst thing was when it ended. This film shows that you do not need a high budget, expensive camera equipment and props to make a good short film. This was filmed on the scenic train route from Dublin to Wexford. This film can also be highly nostalgic as it features the early 2000s irish rail system.

Irish film and I'm from Ireland
MarkLynnIreland12944 July 2022
Not only from Ireland, certainly remember this for my Leaving Cert Irish exams.

Has a bit of an interesting storyline, between the two main characters (the obnoxious annoying and asthmatic blind man: Paul/Pól and the attractive yet bitter businesswoman: Catherine) don't know who between the two feel sympathy for.

At least, I like it's set mainly on a train, I'm very interested in trains and railways.

As I'd agree with some viewers, Catherine could've lied saying she needs toilet facilities and moved seats quietly, even seeing how very nearly empty the passenger carriage is.

Although a sequel is unlikely, I doubt Catherine got away with murder, surely CCTV on the train and she handled his inhaler.

An excellent psychological horror.
liambuchananstu23 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It is an amazingly well written and enveloped short film about a psychotic woman who terrorises and ends up directly causing the death of a blind man on the train home. She is upset by the man's mannerisms and thus decides to cause him to panic and then steals his inhaler causing him to asphyxiate and die. It is and excellent subversion of expectations and serves to show an excellent darker theme to an otherwise upbeat scene and theme. It was an excellent choice to be used as a studied literature for leaving cert Irish students as it is intriguing and stunning in its amazing script writing and story. :)
