In terms of new original content coming to Hulu, March is a slight month, with the streamer’s highlight being the limited series premiere of We Were the Lucky Ones at the end of the month. The show, which is based on Georgia Hunter’s New York Times bestselling novel, is inspired by the true story of a Jewish family who are separated at the start of WWII, and who then have to survive in order to eventually reunite. We Were the Lucky Ones stars Joey King from The Kissing Booth films alongside Percy Jackson‘s Logan Lerman, and debuts on March 28.

Netflix viewers are an unpredictable bunch. One minute they'll lap up a truly abject Michael Fassbender thriller, the next they'll propel the excellent "Dredd" into the Netflix Top 10. The only logical conclusion to all this is that in the age of streaming, we'll pretty much watch anything as our senses are slowly dulled by a never ending supply of "content." Still, we might as well be mildly entertained as we drift towards this bland hellscape of mediocre streaming films and AI-written movies, and this week, Netflix has provided.
This time, Fassbender is nowhere in sight. Instead, we've got "X" causing a minor stir on the Netflix charts. A24 and Ti West's 2022 effort is a slick and stunning original slasher which actually enjoyed a good critical response upon release. 94% on Rotten Tomatoes ain't bad, after all. While you might not expect a film about an elderly woman who lays waste...

Armitage Trail's original novel "Scarface" was first published in 1930, and traces the rise and fall of the vicious gangster Tony "Scarface" Guarino, who took over the Chicago bootlegging underground during Prohibition. Clearly, Tony Guarino is an analog to Al Capone, and many true crime fans find it tantalizingly suspicious that Armitage Trail (real name: Maurice R. Coons) died of a heart attack at age 28, only six months after the publication of "Scarface." Coons, after all, had to hobnob with real gangsters in order to get ideas for his novel, and he would have been known in certain corners of the underground.
In 1932, director Howard Hawks made the first film version of "Scarface," starring Paul Muni as Antonio "Tony" Camonte. Hawks' film was well-received, with some critics citing its naturalness and lack of melodrama. Indeed, it was so natural and treated crime with such frankness that some markets refused to show it.

Keanu Reeves and his character John Wick share the same age in the first film, honoring the actor's birthdate. As the John Wick sequels have progressed, Keanu Reeves has grown older than his character. Originally, John Wick was supposed to be 75 years old, but Keanu Reeves portrayed him younger.
There have been four John Wick movies so far, and the main character's age doesn't always line up with the actor portraying him, Keanu Reeves. Created by Derek Kolstad and directed by Chad Stahelski, the neo-noir John Wick franchise also has a TV prequel series, The Continental, an upcoming spinoff film, Ballerina, and more potential projects on the way. The first film follows the title character, a legendary assassin who comes out of retirement to get revenge on the men who killed his dog, and each subsequent installment in the franchise has excelled at improving the John Wick world.

2023 has been the year of "Suits." Since it started streaming on Netflix back in June, "Suits" has found renewed success, with users sinking more than 3 billion watch-minutes into the series over the summer. Formerly on the USA Network, the legal drama's new-found popularity has at least in part been propelled by clips from the show going viral on TikTok.
Of course, you should never underestimate the Netflix effect either, whereby long-forgotten or overlooked films and shows suddenly gain popularity purely as a result of arriving on the platform. Just look at when the 2008 thriller "Street Kings" debuted on Netflix and suddenly everyone decided it was worth a watch 15 years after it was first released. But "Suits" is no flash in the pan, hit show of the week. Its resurgence has perhaps been the biggest, most surprising of all Netflix revivals. "We have laws for these things!" "Until they fail, then you have me..." MGM Studios has also revealed the first official trailer for The Beekeeper, an action thriller movie from filmmaker David Ayer. They're saving this until January, right after the New Year, which is always a sign it's not going to be good. The story of a man seeking vengeance against scammers whose mission becomes more complicated as the stakes become national when he is revealed to be a former operative of an organization known as "The Beekeepers." It's also "steeped in the mythology" of beekeeping, which this trailer opens with.

Netflix has done it again. And by "it" I mean foisted another instantly forgettable streaming movie on us all. Sometimes Netflix can be a force for good, such as when the streamer reminded us all that David Ayer's pretty good 2008 film "Street Kings" existed. But sometimes, the company is one of the main culprits in contributing to the cavalcade of generic "content" that pollutes our contemporary cultural landscape. "Killer Book Club," for example, is a Spanish horror effort that, despite sitting at an equally horrific 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, has proven popular since its August 25, 2023 debut on Netflix.
Disclaimer: I have not seen "Killer Book Club." But according to the official synopsis it's about "Eight horror-loving friends," who have to "fight for their lives when a killer clown who seems to know the grim secret they share begins to pick them off, one by one." Sound familiar? It's "Scream," it's just a "Scream" rip-off.

"Street Kings" explores the themes of police brutality and corruption through a fiery confrontation between two officers, showcasing the consequences of unethical actions in law enforcement. Captain Wander justifies his unethical means by claiming that the ends, which involve financial security for law enforcement, justify the morally questionable actions taken to achieve them. The film highlights the dangers of a system that puts too much power in the hands of corrupt individuals, with Captain Wander's belief system allowing for increasingly dangerous methods and leaving no room for compassion or empathy.

After just one week atop Netflix’s English-language TV charts, Depp V. Heard has been bumped to No. 2 in favor of Who is Erin Carter?

Depp V. Heard still managed a fairly strong week, though, with 8.3M views. That brought Painkiller in at No. 3 on the list with 5.6M views.
Untold: Swamp Kings came in fourth place during its first week on Netflix with 5M views on the series about the Florida Gators’ heyday under coach Urban Meyer. It was joined by another unscripted series, The Ultimatum: Marry Or Move On Season 2. Before he became fixated on being a superhero in the now-defunct Dceu, Dwayne Johnson was starring in his own HBO comedy drama. Few would admit to loving the comfort food comedy that was "Ballers," but during its five-year run on HBO, the show gave Johnson a chance to showcase a side of himself that fans hadn't really seen prior. His character Spencer Strasmore was not the typical action hero many think of when they think of Johnson's on-screen career. A retired NFL player turned financial manager and mentor to younger players, Strasmore would often make mistakes and certainly didn't have all the answers, allowing Johnson to demonstrate some real range.
That's significant considering the wrestler-turned-actor is pretty much viewed exclusively as an action star and Instagram personality — the most famous influencer in the world, if you will. But in "Ballers," the actor portrayed a former athlete with a rugged determination to succeed.

David Ayer's changes to the original The Fast and the Furious script led to the franchise's massive box office success, but he claims he has "nothing to show" for his work. Ayer's decision to set the movie in Los Angeles and include a highly inclusive and diverse cast was instrumental in shaping the franchise's identity and appeal. Ayer hinted that he was muscled out of the Fast & Furious series by producers, reflecting a history of creative differences with studios.

Hollywood history is full of interesting little mysteries. Like, how could the man responsible for directing the excellent "End of Watch" and writing the unimpeachable classic that is "Training Day" also be responsible for "Suicide Squad" and the embarrassment that was "Bright"? At least in the case of David Ayer's debut DC effort, we know studio meddling was largely to blame. But "Bright?" A hard boiled LA crime odyssey with orcs and fairies? Had anyone been asking for that combo?
Anyway, the point is that, if you only knew about these four movies, you might be under the impression Ayer has just two settings: he's either firing on all cylinders or misfiring entirely. But you'd be mistaken. Lurking between the zenith that was "Training Day" and the nadir that was "Bright," there's "Street Kings," a 2008 crime thriller which Ayer directed from a script by the master of LA noir fiction,...

Over a decade after the last effort fell apart, writer Steven E. de Souza addresses the chances of a potential Commando movie remake. Hitting theaters in 1985, the original Commando came fresh off of Arnold Schwarzenegger's star-making turn in James Cameron's The Terminator and saw the action icon portray a retired United States Army Special Forces Colonel who races against time to rescue his daughter from a South American dictator. While not a critical darling, it was a box office smash and is considered one of Schwarzenegger's most iconic movies to date.
During a recent interview with Radio Times for the movie's special screening at the London Action Festival, Steven E. de Souza was asked about the previously scrapped Commando remake from David Ayer. The writer didn't offer too many details on the prior attempt, but proved doubtful in his feelings of another remake gaining ground, feeling no one can recapture Schwarzenegger's charisma,...

The Prison Break cast is full of great actors who brought the show’s complex antiheroes and despicable villains to life, and they all have impressive filmographies outside the series. Prison Break revolves around the bond between two brothers and their plot to break out of jail. Along the way, they're helped out by the prison doctor, their childhood friend and lawyer, and a handful of fellow inmates who also want to break free. The producers of Prison Break found the perfect actor to play each part in the cast.
Traditionally, TV shows set up a main cast with several major characters that the audience can check in on every week. But Prison Break was far from a traditional TV show. Lincoln Burrows and his loyal brother Michael Scofield are the only characters who appear in every episode of Prison Break. Thanks to constant character deaths, the cast is always changing.

Filled with action, drama, and moral ambiguity, here are cop movies to watch after Dragged Across Concrete. S. Craig Zahler’s third film is a slow burn cop thriller that follows two police officers, Ridgeman and Lurasetti, childhood friends and now colleagues in arms known for their brutal methods of upholding the law. Looking back over the "Fast & Furious" movies, it's astonishing how far they have evolved. In 2021's "F9," two characters literally launched a car into space. This was followed by a scene where the central team of stunt drivers equipped their cars with powerful electromagnets that could pull entire washing machines out of storefronts in order to fling them at enemy pursuers. Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew are more or less unkillable at this point, a detail that the characters were wise enough to acknowledge; Chris "Ludacris" Bridges points out that they may all actually be immortal.
Looking back to Rob Cohen's 2001 original film, "The Fast and the Furious," one finds a very, very modest beginning. The twist at the end of "Law Abiding Citizen" is that Clyde has somehow constructed a series of tunnels leading in and out of his prison's solitary confinement cells. He has been sneaking out of prison in order...

Screenwriter Kurt Wimmer cooks pure popcorn. More accurately, in his own words, he builds powder kegs. He fills barrels with gunpowder, he lights the match, and then lets it all blow on the page. It's a formula that's led to Wimmer writing or co-writing hits such as "The Thomas Crown Affair" remake, "Salt," "Law Abiding Citizen," and "Street Kings."
As for his directing credits, he's the man behind gun kata in the cult action favorite, "Equilibrium." Following the 2006 release of his second directorial effort, "Ultraviolet," he committed full-time to writing, but he returned to the director's chair for a remake of "Children of the Corn." For Wimmer, that decision had little to do with the original Stephen King story or past adaptations.
"Children of the Corn" isn't Wimmer's only new project. He created a YouTube channel showing him writing a new spec script, "Fortunate Son." Recently, we talked to Wimmer about "Children of the Corn,...

It’s almost the end of another year…another grueling, relentless, shuffle around the pitiless sun. But before that: more content! HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2022 is filled with a handful of exciting original TV series.
December 2022 truly is TV’s time to shine on HBO Max. Things get started on day one with the release of Gossip Girl season 2 (Dec. 1). That will be followed by His Dark Materials on Dec. 5. Adapting The Amber Spyglass, this season promises to be the most action-packed yet for the BBC/HBO fantasy collaboration. December 8 sees the arrival of Doom Patrol season 4. This DC comic property doesn’t have the cultural cache of some of its CW contemporaries but when it’s rolling, it might be one of the best comic series around.
Now that Warner has mostly scuttled its simultaneous streaming/theatrical release strategy, there aren’t many big original movies to speak of.

A follow-up to the 130M-plus grossing movie Law Abiding Citizen is happening with producer Lucas Foster and screenwriter Kurt Wimmer returning, as well as Gerard Butler and his G-Base partner Alan Siegel reprising their roles as producers.
The storyline is being kept secrets. The first movie starred Butler and Jamie Foxx and was directed by F. Gary Gray, and followed assistant district attorney Nick Rice’s (Foxx) pursuit of Clyde Shelton (Butler), a frustrated father who implements an elaborate and twisted plan to bring down the entire judicial system in Philadelphia after a plea bargain sets free the man who murdered his wife and daughter. The pic in December on Netflix became one of the top three most viewed movies alongside Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds’ Red Notice and Sandra Bullock’s The Unforgivable.
Rivulet Films’ Rob Paris and Mike Witherill are producing alongside Foster and Wimmer. Foster will produce under his Warp Films banner.

Timur Bekmambetov’s portrait of a screen-to-screen relationship is timely, although it mostly scratches the surface
Expanding the digital-age subgenre of films entirely told on computer screens from the personal (“Searching”) and the supernatural (“Unfriended”) into the geopolitical, “Profile” is a tense on-camera thriller based on a real-life case dealing with international terrorism.
In 2014, French journalist Anna Erelle, using a fake identity, established a pretend romantic relationship with an Isis jihadist via Skype. The objective was to learn about their tactics to recruit and transport young European women into Syria. Her hazardous ordeal is documented in the book “In the Skin of a Jihadist.”
For its cinema transmutation, the online conceit of this high-stakes story is at once pertinent to how we regularly interact with others and, given the ongoing pandemic that’s led many to swear off video chats, also visually tedious. Watching a movie unfold in full on...
