On the surface, “Música” feels like a very standard story about a talented guy who finds himself caught between two girls he likes, and — rather than be honest with them — starts dating both at the same time. Hilarity ensues. Thankfully, much like the fictional Rudy he plays here, the real Rudy Mancuso is more than meets the eye. His feature directorial debut is a smart and charming coming-of-age love story that is also a musical and such a good cinematic portrayal of synesthesia that it’ll make you forget all about the other, misbegotten attempts to thread the same needle (does anyone remember “August Rush”?).
We are in the era of social media movie directors, but the days of “Fred: The Movie” are thankfully gone. Between Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade,” and Danny and Michael Philippou’s “Talk to Me,” YouTube is starting to seem like a viable incubator for worthwhile film directors.

Freddie Highmore recalled the extreme lengths he was put through to appease a certain talk show host who apparently doesn’t like seeing guests ahead of time.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday (18 April) evening, The Good Doctor star complimented Kimmel’s backstage set-up, calling it “lovely” compared to other “challenging” late-night sets he’d been on.
Intrigued by Highmore’s substandard experiences, Kimmel goaded him to say more.
Giving in, the British actor said: “I’m trying to avoid saying the name, but this host doesn’t like seeing guests beforehand.
“So I was coming backstage with a couple of the producers and they looked up and they saw the host at the end of the corridor and they were really, really scared.
“They grabbed me and they threw me into the next door that was right by the hallway and it was a broom closet.

15 years removed from its original theatrical release, "The Mist" has garnered a reputation as one of the finest Stephen King adaptations ever captured on film. Yes, it is extremely brutal and dark, but it's King we're talking about. It's easy to forget that, at the time, the movie was straight-up screwed over by Dimension Films, with the studio opting to release it in the middle of the pre-Thanksgiving holiday rush against stiff competition. It turns out, this is something director Frank Darabont literally begged to avoid.
/Film's own Eric Vespe recently spoke to Darabont and many others involved in the making of "The Mist" for a comprehensive oral history on the film, which you can read in its entirety right here. But one interesting tidbit is that the director revealed he fought producer Bob Weinstein very hard on the November 2007 release date.

Three of this year’s Oscar nominated tunes were penned by Black songwriters: Celeste reaped a bid (along with Daniel Pemberton) for “Hear My Voice” from “The Trial of the Chicago”; D’Mile, recent Grammy champ H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas collaborated on “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”; and supporting actor nominee Leslie Odom Jr. was cited with Nashville based singer/songwriter Sam Ashworth for “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami.”
The first Black tunesmith to contend for Best Original Song at the Oscars was Quincy Jones who was nominated in 1967 (alongside lyricist Bob Russell) for “The Eyes of Love” from the long-forgotten “Banning.” (Jones earned the first of his four score Oscar nominations that same year for “In Cold Blood.”) He and Russell reaped another bid the following year for the title tune from “For Love of Ivy.” His last nomination to date was in 1985 for...

There’s no lack of talent on display in Disney+’s latest original feature “Godmothered,” a film built around the charming duo of Isla Fisher and Jillian Bell (already solid casting) that also has the space to include gems like Jane Curtin and June Squibb in roles so supporting that one of them spends most of her screen time cosplaying as the face of a clock. Other supporting roles are kitted out by talented kiddos like Jillian Shea Spaeder and Willa Skye or consistent comedic stars like Utkarsh Ambudkar and Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and the whole thing was cooked up by rising screenwriters Melissa Stack (the underappreciated “The Other Woman”) and Kari Granlund. Even better, it’s all directed by Sharon Maguire, the genius behind the first (and best) “Bridget Jones” film.

Anastasia Brown, a veteran music supervisor who has long been a key figure in connecting Nashville with Hollywood, has been appointed chief content strategist of Visionary Media Group. She’ll direct content across platforms for the company’s music, TV, film and scoring projects.
The move comes at a time when Nashville is making good on its longtime promise as a major hub for film and television music, as full-scale scoring stages open up to rival the spaces in Los Angeles — on top of the traditional studios that have always been plentiful in Music City — and even gaming projects look to Nashville for their soundtracks.
“Creatives move to Nashville because of our sense of community, level of talent and respect for their talents,” Brown tells Variety. “A multi-media company will financially benefit content creators, which will then allow them to thrive here for years to come. I have always cared...

“Empire Star” Terrence Howard may be quitting acting for good.
In an interview with Extra on the set of the Fox drama, Howard told correspondent and current Miss USA Cheslie Kryst that he’s “done with acting” after “Empire” wraps production.
“Oh, I’m done with acting. I’m done pretending,” Howard told Kryst in response to a question about his next moves post-“Empire.”
When asked whether he would instead focus on philanthropic efforts, he replied, “No, not philanthropy; I’m just focusing on bringing truth to the world.”
Reps for Howard did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment Thursday.
Fox will air the sixth and final season of “Empire” on Sept. 24. But even after Howard is done playing Lucious, he still has two other projects in the works, according to his IMDb page — “Cut Throat City,” an action-drama feature directed by RZA, and an action-comedy film called “Selfie,...

Update, with Broadway League response Broadway League president Charlotte St. Martin tells Deadline that producers will submit new proposals to Actors’ Equity for another round of talks next week as the two sides resume negotiations over the sticky topic of profit sharing for cast members who contribute to show development.
“We absolutely believe we will end up with a deal that’s good for everybody,” St. Martin said, responding to the union’s announcement today of a strike against new Broadway development.
St. Martin would not disclose the new proposals the League will offer.
Earlier this afternoon, Actors’ Equity declared a strike against members of the Broadway League – the producers’ trade organization – on new Broadway show development. Specifically, Equity is barring its members from taking part in the lab sessions that have become an increasingly popular way for writers and performers to develop new productions, especially musicals. The strike also covers workshops and staged readings.

Not to be confused with Asif Kapadia’s acclaimed documentary about the late singer that released earlier this year, Screen Daily has revealed that a second Amy Winehouse biopic has entered pre-production. Irish filmmaker Kirsten Sheridan (Dollhouse, August Rush) will write and direct the biographical feature, which has its crosshairs placed on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo starlet Noomi Rapace to assume the title role.

It's been four years since Amy Winehouse tragically passed away, all too young, at the age of twenty-seven, but 2015 has been something of a celebration of her life. Earlier this year, Asif Kapadia released his documentary "Amy" which spun the tale of singer's life with carefully constructed archival footage, and now, Winehouse is getting the big screen biopic treatment. Read More: Review: Asif Kapadia's Powerful Amy Winehouse Documentary 'Amy' Screen Daily reports that Noomi Rapace ("Prometheus," "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo") is in talks to player the artist in the untitled picture. Kirsten Sheridan ("August Rush") has written the script and will direct the picture that will tell the tale about the singer's life. The all important music rights are currently being negotiated, but as we've learned from other biopics that have spent years in development, it's not always an easy process to sort out, especially when estate's get.

Remember the little boy who starred opposite Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? It's been 10 years since Tim Burton's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory remake hit theaters, but former child star Freddie Highmore is all grown up now! Highmore, who you might also remember from 2004's Finding Neverland and 2007's August Rush, is 23, and as you can see from the cover of Attitude magazine's Summer 2015 issue, he's definitely not a little boy anymore! The handsome Brit, who currently stars as Norman Bates on A&E's Bates Motel, acknowledged his mature new look. "I think in a way, being judged as a sex symbol and being famous almost go hand in hand but it is...

Manuel here to bring some Hollywood-tinged stage-bound news to give us a brief respite from the fun that is Hollywood awards season.
Cindy Lauper and Kinky Boots, Elton John and Billy Elliot, Alan Menken and Sister Act, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Bring it On, Marc Shaiman and Catch Me if You Can. It seems as if Broadway is on a movie-adaptation streak, no? Movie based adaptations have won seven of the past fourteen Tony Awards for Best Musical! This season alone will see Honeymoon in Vegas (based on the 1992 film of the same name), musicals based on Oscar-winning films Dr Zhivago (which recently announced its star) and Gigi (for what it's worth, its pre-Broadway engagement stars Vanessa Hudgens), as well as Bull Durham. Down the line we’re still expecting First Wives Club, Amelie, American Psycho, The Bodyguard and Ever After to make it to New York in the near future.

Add another title to the long list of movies getting the musical makeover treatment. The 2007 release, August Rush, which starred Freddie Highmore as an orphaned music prodigy who runs away from his foster home to find his parents, has been adapted for the stage by Glen Berger and Mark Mancina. Producers Southpaw Entertainment and Cj E&M announced on Tuesday that the Broadway-bound project will have a closed-door developmental industry presentation in New York on Dec. 9-10, directed by John Doyle. A Tony winner for the 2005 revival of Sweeney Todd, Doyle is currently represented off-Broadway

"Being a worst case scenario kind of person, I've worried so many times about losing so many people I care about, but I never could imagine losing Robin." That's how former child actor Mara Wilson recalled the late Robin Williams in a post on her personal blog, in which she said she regrets not having kept in better contact with him. Mrs. Doubtfire fans will likely remember Wilson for playing Williams's youngest daughter in the classic 1993 comedy, when she was just 6 years old. Now 27, Wilson has retired from film acting and has made a name for herself online for her...

The Academy's music branch can always be counted on for at least one out-of-nowhere surprise in the Best Original Song category. Remember "Paris 36?" Or "Chasing Ice?" Or "August Rush?" Forgotten them all? No one would blame you. Anyway, they seem to have truly outdone themselves this year. There were audible gasps and chuckles when Cheryl Boone Isaacs began reading the list of nominees in the category, and first off the bat was "Alone Yet Not Alone" from, er, "Alone Yet Not Alone." If you already knew what the movie was when the nomination was announced, give yourself a pat on...

Danielle Bradbery from Cypress, Texas, has performed nine times, competitively, on this season of The Voice. Earlier this year, her mentor, Blake Shelton, said she isn’t just important to the country music industry, she’s important to the world. Danielle will probably win (at least one Vegas gambler puts her odds at 3-1, ahead of fellow finalists Michelle Chamuel and The Swon Brothers). Danielle is also 16 years old.
Four seasons in, and The Voice has finally run into a child prodigy it can’t dismiss, someone whose look-at-me youth isn’t hiding a lack of listen-to-me talent. And Danielle...

It's not exactly a trailer, but Disney just release this gorgeous new promo for their Cars spin-off Planes (which was not created with Pixar Animation), that has some truly stunning animated landscapes and scenery. Using a lot of the flying sequences from the film (of which there are many when the main characters are actually airplanes), the promo uses a very uplifting score by the film's composer, Mark Mancina (Training Day, August Rush). The promo really makes it feel like the film has some heart, but the sneak peek with all the dialogue still has me a little leery. Maybe Disney can pull this one off without Pixar? Here's the sneak preview trailer for Disney's Planes, via Disney Movie Trailers: Planes is directed by Klay Hall ("King of the Hill," Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure) and follows Dusty (Dane Cook), a small town crop dusting plane who longs to enter...

In the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock thriller "Psycho," embezzling secretary Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is on her way from Phoenix to her boyfriend's California home when a pounding rainstorm forces her to take shelter in the dilapidated Bates Motel, run by the apparently shy Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins).
Unfortunately for Marion, Norman suffers from a split personality, one a browbeaten son and the other the domineering mother he killed, who comes to life in her son and goes on a murderous rampage.
So do we just blame Mom for Norman's crime -- or is there more to the story?
On Monday, March 18, A&E Network premieres the first season of "Bates Motel," a psychological thriller that delves into Norman's past while also updating the story to the present day.

Freddie Highmore has grown up before our eyes. He starred opposite Johnny Depp twice, first in his breakthrough role in Finding Neverland and later as Charlie Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and then he played a young music prodigy in the sentimental tearjerker August Rush. A few years ago, while beginning his studies in both Arabic and Spanish at Cambridge, he filmed the 2011 Sundance entry The Art of Getting By (formerly Homework) opposite Emma Roberts, a performance that caught the eye of Vera Farmiga, with whom he currently stars in A&E’s Bates Motel (premiering tonight at ten). Vulture recently chatted with Highmore, who just turned 21, about playing a young Norman Bates, filming atop an old dump in Vancouver, and why the comparisons to Twin Peaks are exactly right. (Minor spoilers about the pilot within!)My most vivid memory of you is from quite a while ago.

Today’s casting news is so juicy, that you just may want to take bite out of it. There’s a new Dracula series being put together for NBC with the very yummy Jonathan Rhys Meyers set to star. Joining him as the female lead is Jessica De Gouw. She’s the same young woman who recently brought to life the Huntress for the CW’s Arrow.
I can hear the fangirls screaming already. Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers was practically born for this role. He’s always been nice to look at in my book. If you’re a fan who has yet to see him in Ride with the Devil, Match Point or August Rush, then you, my friend, have got some DVDs to go rent.
On the television side, the actor is probably best know for playing King Henry VIII in the saucy Showtime series, The Tudors.

What makes some film soundtracks transcend from mere background music to helping a director tell a story and help invoke an emotional response? Is it a clever mix of well chosen tunes that capture the zeitgeist or an eclectic mix of older material that either captures a time and place or sets a tone of nostalgia? The answer varies depending on the feature film. 2012 was a fantastic year for original motion picture movie scores but not so good for soundtracks. Still, Simon and I have managed to pull a list of what we feel were the very best.

TNT is dipping its toe into the monster genre with a "Frankenstein" series based on novels by best-selling author Dean Koontz.
James V. Hart (the 1992 "Dracula," "August Rush") and his son, Jake Hart, will write the pilot script for the show, Deadline reports, and James Hart will be an executive producer alongside Koontz.
Koontz's story is set in New Orleans, where Victor Frankenstein, now going by the name Victor Helios, has managed to survive for 200 years after he was presumed dead in a battle with the monster he created. The monster survived too, and coincidentally has also settled in New Orleans. Victor has continued his experiments, both extending his own life and creating new beings who are deeply loyal to him.

20 year-old British actor Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Spiderwick Chronicles, August Rush) has signed on to play young Norman Bates in A&E’s upcoming series Bates Motel, which serves as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock horror classic Psycho. The series will examine the relationship between mother and son and what drives the young-man to become the killer in the classic movie. Vera Farmiga has signed on to play Norma Bates, the domineering that somehow drove her child to kill. Also, has been noted elsewhere, showrunner Carlton Cuse seems to understand that this new series could be interpreted as reworking of the Showtime movie from years ago called Psycho IV: The Beginning. So to distance themselves from that and all it’s continuity issues, it seems the Bates Motel will be more of a reimaging of Norman Bates life; which means now Norman has an older brother named Dylan,...
