Poetic story of self-discovery and cultural pride.

Beautiful story, breathless landscape, excellent cinematography, and elegant performance by Malia Verdadero as Kamea.

While Kamea has many fanciful aspects, it is not a fairy-tale. Kamea is a story that reflects the integrity and strength of the Hawaiian spirit. Storytelling has always been an important element of the Hawaiian culture and it continues to be in various forms with new stories being told through contemporary mediums. It was refreshing to see that no exotifying or skewing of the culture and people had been done in order to make it "work". I hope that Jennifer Akana-Sturla continues on to make more movies for she is certainly a talented writer and director. Because it is a short film it leaves you yearning for more. Highly recommended for a young audience and of course for those who love all things Hawai'i nei. I hope this review was helpful and that you truly appreciate the movie as much as I did. Mahalo.
