This show was kind of like other shows that make fun of public domain movies but it is maybe the worst and cheapest example of it. Steve Smith (from Red Green fame) would play a bad old movie, like a 1950's Tarzan movie, and he would over dub the voices with his own voice to make it funny. The thing is him doing so many voices got pretty boring and the jokes weren't very funny. It was different than just playing the movies and riffing on them like MST3K and This Movie Sucks but not as good or funny. MST3K and This Movie Sucks! were both a lot better than this. But this was a good try and respect him for taking a chance on this format.

Funny Stuff

This might be considered Canada's version of Mystery Science Theater 3000 but it varies in so many ways. Steve Smith voices over one of the main characters in an old and somewhat bad movie. The other characters lines stay the same. What makes this extremely funny is Steve's lines usually revolve around sex while the other characters "react" to his lines straight faced. One of the episodes was "Plan 9 From Outer Space" but instead of concentrating on the downsides that everyone already knows, Steve turns this into a humorous romp of sex jokes. My only hope is that American fans of MST3K are able to view this masterpiece. And that us Canadians are able to see another season of Steve Smith Playhouse!
I love it!

I first saw this show on at 3 or 4 AM on Space - Canada's version of the SciFi channel. But I recorded them and have saved them from obscurity!
In a vein similar to MST3K, Steve Smith dubs over the voice of a single character from some bad B-movie. They heavily edit the movie for length (to fit within half an hour) and add some funny sound effects (fart sounds anyone).
I think it's hilarious - but it may not be for everyone. Sure, the jokes are crude - lots of sex jokes. Maybe it's funnier very late at night :)

This show was just not funny.
Steve Smith is best known of course from doing his other show here in Hamilton called Red Green, he played the main character Red Green obviously who is the famous plaid shirt wearing, bearded guy's guy who fixes everything with duct tape and lives in a lodge up north and talks about his adventures with all his weird friends slash lodge buddies tagging along.
I don't like Red Green much but at least it was a show and I can understand people liking it.
Steve Smith Playhouse is just him adding his own lines to a bad movie, essentially he becomes the lead character of the movie dubbing over his lines and leaving the rest of the movie untouched.
Not a bad idea but it's just not funny, there are way too many sex jokes and none of the jokes are funny and the quality of the show is just really poor.
Just a bad show!
