I saw this documentary on BBC and later on the Dutch Network Television (with Dutch voice-over). It's a how-did-it-all-come-together kind off piece, and it works. Twenty years after a lot of people who were involved were willing to talk about that Sunday twenty years ago, when about 40 English popstars came together, and recorded this little 'hymne' for the starving people in Africa.
You get to see how Bob Geldof came up with the idea (sitting on his couch with his daughters, watching the news, seeing thousands of children die in Africa), how he subsequently got together with Midge Ure to write a song, and how the recording process was. The latter is definitely the better piece of the documentary with some fantastic footage of all those 80's popstar heroes. Check out the guys from Status Quo, you'll laugh your ass of. It concludes with the question 'was it all worth it?', 'did the money went where it was supposed to go?', and we can actually see that it made a bit of a difference..
I was twelve years old when Live Aid happened that Friday in June and I spent about twenty hours in front of the TV, totally mesmerized. If you are from that same generation I'm sure you will enjoy this documentary.
