The Telluride Film Festival has announced its 2017 lineup. As usual, the exclusive Colorado gathering features a range of buzzy fall season movies, including many films also premiering in Venice and Toronto as well as others resurfacing from earlier in the year, just in time for awards season. Filmmakers in this year’s program range from Alexander Payne to Angelina Jolie. The festival will also honor cinematographer Ed Lachman, actor Christian Bale, and screen a new cut of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1984 Harlem musical “The Cotton Club.”
One of the bigger films to make the cut in this year’s lineup should take no one by surprise: “Downsizing” (12/22, Paramount), Payne’s long-gestating near-future workplace satire starring Matt Damon, will screen at the festival where Payne has been a regular for years (both as a filmmaker and audience member). The movie opened the Venice Film Festival earlier this week, and was followed...

This review contains spoilers.

To really catch your whodunnit audience off-guard, make the culprit a kid. Twelve-year-old Bobby killed Lucy Beale on EastEnders. One-year-old Maggie shot Mr Burns on The Simpsons. And sixteen-year-old Michael raped Trish Winterman on Broadchurch. He didn’t want to; a bigger boy made him. That’s about the long and short of it.
If I sound withering, forgive me. Broadchurch has done a great many things right this series, but revealing that Michael—groomed by swaggery young shit and serial rapist Leo—attacked Trish wasn’t among them.
Perhaps it’s plausible and rapists routinely recruit and induct apprentices, but Michael’s guilt had a little too much ‘Aha! Didn’t see that coming did you?...

'Million Dollar Baby' movie with Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood. 'Million Dollar Baby' movie: Clint Eastwood contrived, overlong drama made (barely) watchable by first-rate central performance Fresh off the enthusiastically received – and insincere – Mystic River, Clint Eastwood went on to tackle the ups and downs of the boxing world in the 2004 melo Million Dollar Baby. Despite the cheery title, this is not the usual Rocky-esque rags-to-riches story of the determined underdog who inevitably becomes a super-topdog once she (in this case it's a “she”) puts on her gloves, jumps into the boxing ring, and starts using other women as punching bags. That's because about two-thirds into the film, Million Dollar Baby takes a radical turn toward tragedy that is as unexpected as everything else on screen is painfully predictable. In fact, once the dust is settled, even that last third quickly derails into the same sentimental mush Eastwood and...

When The Simpsons returns in the fall, it will be without one of it most iconic voices. Amidst contract disputes, Harry Shearer, who has helped give life to characters such as Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Waylon Smithers, and Principal Skinner, will be leaving the series. “Harry Shearer was offered the same deal the rest of the cast accepted, and passed,” The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean said in a statement to the New York Times. “The show will go on and we wish him well. Maggie took it hard. We do not plan to kill off characters like Burns and Flanders but will recast with the finest voiceover talent available.” Shearer later confirmed his departure on Twitter, stating that his decision was made “because I wanted what we’ve always had: the freedom to do other work.” He also thanked Simpsons fans who have watched the show throughout the years.

The Simpsons has pastiched hundreds of movies in its time. From Hitchcock to Kubrick to Disney, we select our top 30 favourites...
The Simpsons has a long history of peppering its stories with pop culture references, and some of the show’s finest gags stem from the world of cinema. These have ranged from the briefest of quotes, to full on shot-for-shot parodies and extended episode-long homages.
Most striking in trying to put this list together was the sheer volume of movie references there are to choose from. In pretty much any given episode of The Simpsons, there are at least a couple, with nods to James Bond, 2001: A Space Odyssey and the work of Alfred Hitchcock proving three of the most regular candidates. The tributes to numerous great horror movies in the show’s Treehouse Of Horror episodes could have been used to fill this list all on their own.

For Halloween, we celebrate The Simpsons' best Treehouse Of Horror stories, feat. zombies, Hitchcock and Kubrick spoofs and more...
“Nothing seems to bother my kids but tonight's show, which I totally wash my hands of, is really scary.”
For anyone who grew up watching The Simpsons, the Treehouse Of Horror Halloween specials are an annual horror staple, from spooky couch gag to horror-themed credits. You can learn an awful lot of things just from watching the show, but for younger audiences, these episodes gave us our introduction to certain iconic horror stories.
Having ditched the early framing device of the family telling scary stories to one another, with Springfielders cast in key roles, the format is now closer to a mini-anthology of terror with three stories that take place outside of canon. This has usually given the writers licence to be more gruesome and outlandish than in the regular series,...

Rob counts down the top 50 episodes of TV's longest-running animated series, The Simpsons...
Since its debut in 1989, across 552 episodes and 25 seasons, The Simpsons has become one of the most revered and beloved TV programmes of all time. It’s a true cultural phenomenon that’s influenced not just animation, but all areas of TV comedy and sitcom. For so many of us, its quotes and catchphrases have permeated our everyday vernacular, from single words like “crisitunity” and “embiggen” to phrases “you don’t win friends with salad” and “everything’s coming up Milhouse.”
Personal opinions may vary, but for me the show’s peak years were from season 4 through to 10. They’re consistently funny, all killer and no filler runs with barely a dud episode to be found between 1992-1998. Past this point the standard becomes a little more mixed, and recent seasons have been distinctly average at best. The...

[As you probably already know, starting on Thursday, August 21, Fxx is running the Every Simpsons Ever Marathon, running through all 552 episodes of "The Simpsons," plus "The Simpsons Movie." To aid in your viewing process, Team HitFix is selecting our favorite episodes from each day, plus an episode or two that you can skip and use as a bathroom or nap break.] Somehow, despite including two different clip shows, Day 3 of Fxx's Every Simpsons Ever Marathon leads us deep into the show's Golden Years, as we finish Season 4, go through Season 5 and most of Season 6, spanning from "So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show" through "The PTA Disbands." For the second straight day, we had no trouble picking two favorites apiece and we left out a slew of great episodes including Krusty's Kancellation, Bart's rise to "I Didn't Do It!" fame, James Woods' stint at the Kwik-e-Mart, Homer's trip into space and Lisa's attempts to design a new Malibu Stacy. [The image accompanying this story is from "Marge in Chains" which, if I'm being honest, didn't come close to making our list, but it's the only official image Fxx was able to provide for the episodes airing on Saturday.] My own greatest regret is that I couldn't pick "Treehouse of Horror V," which features "The Shinning" and "Time and Punishment," which are two of my five "Treehouse" segments. However, I stand by the two episodes I chose. And guess what? Day 4 was even Harder, choosing-wise. But that's tomorrow.

As we are full-on in the Lent season, our definitive list will focus on films about religion or some aspect of it. The #1 qualification to be on this list is to deliberately focus on religion, a religious figure, or have the presence of a religion/faith as an integral plot point. For example, most of Luis Bunuel’s films can be viewed as attacks on the church, but they aren’t literally about Christianity; therefore, they won’t be included. So, on this list, we’ll look at as many different faiths as possible (though, there are obviously a lot more movies about Christianity than any other religion). We’ll even dabble into cults and sects that don’t really exist. Final rule: no documentaries. We’re keeping this fictional.

Over the course of more than 500 episodes, dedicated Simpsons fans have got to know the show’s hundreds of characters pretty well, from the one-offs created to give a quick punchline to the regulars who pop up every week. But however much we love to watch them, it’s difficult to deny that the vast majority of Springfield’s residents just wouldn’t be all that fun to know in real life.
From the incompetent police to the apathetic teachers and the depressed alcoholics of Moe’s Tavern, these people may be fun on the show but they become sad very quickly when transposed to a real-world setting. And this is before we even consider the corrupt Mayor Quimby, the evil Mr Burns, or the attempted child killer Sideshow Bob.

In trying to scare up some laughs for its annual Halloween episode, The Simpsons also got deadly serious: They recruited big-screen writer-director Guillermo Del Toro. Known for crafting surreal worlds of fantasy and horror (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone) as well as action (Pacific Rim), Del Toro turned Springfield into his own wicked playground with a 2-minute-45-second couch gag/ opening-titles extravaganza to kick off Oct. 6′s “Treehouse of Horror Xxiv.” It’s a dense, elaborate, clever, creepy, impressive creation — and it requires several viewings to process all of the action. According to a widely reported news story, the 25th season of The Simpsons will see the death of a major character. Al Jean spoke to the Canada Sun Times to confirm plans to chop the character, without actually stating who would be meeting the Reaper, unsurprisingly.
“I’ll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won’t say who it is.”
That doesn’t exactly narrow it down too much, since there have been 25 such winners since the show began back in 1989 – though presumably Maggie Simpson and the family pets are pretty safe – and Simpsons fans will no doubt now be fraught with tension as to which yellow icon will bite the big one in the coming season.

In recent years we have been treated to many new takes of classic games or long awaited sequels, that always disappoint fans who have fond childhood memories of the originals. Thankfully Konami, the people behind T.S.A, decided against the idea of completely revamping an old game and simply transported an already great game into the future by releasing it for console download.

Firstly, let me reiterate how difficult this list was for me, as a life-long Simpsons fan, to compile. Of course we know that the Simpsons hasn’t always been at full strength (some of the later series just didn’t do it for me in terms of hilarity or poignancy) and it’s common knowledge that ratings have been slipping steadily since around series ten or eleven; although I do feel that The Simpsons Movie marked a welcomed return to form for the series when it was released in 2007.

With a staggering 22 complete series and 23rd currently airing, it’s the longest running sitcom ever to air and – after questionable, but ultimately satisfactory contract negotiations with the actors – it shows no sign of ending any time soon.

When a season of The Simpsons opened with Michael Jackson guest voicing a crazy, fat white man who sang Lisa a happy birthday song, you knew you were in for an amazing season.
By season three, we really feel The Simpsons founds its groove and entered what many call the golden age of The Simpsons. The show had plenty of classic episodes during season three including "Flaming Moe's" and "Homer at the Bat."
But don't worry, you don't just have to take our word for it. In our effort to make the most complete archive of The Simpsons quotes in one place, we've reached this iconic season. And yes, we do realize with 18 seasons left to go, we're nowhere near complete.
However, that's not your concern. Your job is to get clicking because with nearly 500 of The Simpsons season three quotes in our system, you have plenty of work youself.

Back in 1990, The Simpsons began a tradition with season two that has continued for the last twenty years with the first "Treehouse of Horror" Halloween special.
Season two was also notable for introducing us to plenty of recurring characters including Dr. Hibbert, his less successful counterpart Dr. Nick, Akira, and so many other faces we still see to this day.
Oh and did we mention we first met Phil Hartman's wonderful contributions of Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure that we would enjoy for eight more seasons until the actor's untimely death in 1998?
Or what about the many other celebrities that would lend their voices to characters including Danny DeVito, Dustin Hoffman, and Ringo Starr. Yeah, season two featured some amazing episodes.
Don't believe us? Well then you better start reading our collection of The Simpsons season two quotes and be convinced.
Fine, too lazy for that? Then check out...

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

"Modern" is to fight for Best Comedy category with "Office" and "30 Rock" in addition to "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and fellow newcomer "Glee". The pilot has also helped "Modern" in scoring a nomination for Episodic Comedy which again lists "30 Rock" and "Office". For being new, "Modern" is put under Best New Series along with "Glee", "The Good Wife", "Hung" and "Nurse Jackie".
Meanwhile, "Mad Men" is a dominator of the drama series, taking in Best Drama nomination and two Episodic Drama nods. Other drama competitors include "Lost", "Dexter", "True Blood" and "Friday Night Lights".
The biggest surprise of all is the inclusion of HBO's low-profile comedy "Eastbound & Down" in the Episodic category. Moreover, "The Simpsons...

Several usual suspects -- "30 Rock," "Mad Men," "The Office," "The Simpsons" -- picked up multiple nominations for the 2010 Writers Guild of America Awards -- but a couple of new shows broke through too.
"Glee" and "Modern Family" are both up for best comedy and best new series at the guild's awards, which will be presented Feb. 20. "Modern Family" also picked up an episodic comedy nomination for its pilot, written by series creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd.
The other comedy series nominees are "30 Rock," "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Office." For drama series, the contenders are "Breaking Bad," "Dexter," "Friday Night Lights," "Lost" and "Mad Men." Someone from "The Simpsons" will win in the animation category, as its writers swept all five nominations.
Below is a partial list of the nominees in the TV and radio categories (movie nominations will be announced later). The complete list is at WGA.org.

Zac Efron plays young Mike O’Donnell, a former super-stud high school basketball player who grew up to be Matthew Perry. Once the most popular kid in school (We know this because during a basketball game he joined the cheerleading squad mid-performance and executed all the circa-1989 dance moves with perfection.), Mike is now in the midst of a failed marriage and his kids want nothing to do with him. Sad because Mike gave up his chance at college b-ball glory when his girlfriend Scarlett became pregnant and literally dropped everything to do the honorable thing by getting hitched. Now, subconsciously, Mike resents his choices and wonders for 20 years hence what could have been. Pro ball player? Maybe. One thing is for sure, he probably wouldn’t be drowning in the blah of pharmaceuticals marketing where he’s constantly passed up on promotions for younger, prettier co-workers by a Bluetooth earpiece-sporting d-bag.

Monty Burns, eat your heart out. Certain to make the rest of Springfield's denizens jealous, the U.S. Postal Service today unveiled 44-cent first-class stamps of The Simpsons. The collection will be released nationwide on May 7. "This is the biggest and most adhesive honor The Simpsons has ever received," said show mastermind Matt Groening, who conceived the original artwork for the stamps. In honor of the Fox animated series' 20th season, there are four commemorative designs, each with a different portrait of four-fingered family: a dazed/crazed Homer, a worried Marge, a cow-causing Bart, a smiling Lisa and Po'd-looking Maggie. (Sorry, Santa's Little Helper and...
