An "ordinary" motion turned into a dance film with imagination, invention and impressive editing
Screened as a dance short film, this was really made by the director shooting a man walking onto a diving board, bouncing once or twice then diving into the water. Mixing this with other shots taken under the water and from various he has simply (did I really just say "simply?) taken this away and edited it together to produce something that is rhythmic and enjoyable. Essentially we have the various shot cut together so that the man keeps bouncing, speeding up and slowing down his pace to produce a nice rhythm to it and a collection of movements which could almost be called dance.
In many ways this engaged me because it was like a dance had been produced from an "ordinary" motion rather than a dance being filmed and then put on screen the director had to find the beat and find the motion when he went into the editing suite. That he did find it is obvious in the finished product and it builds nicely to a steady pace before going out on a little chuckle. The shots are well laid out and imaginative and I can only imagine the work the director put in on the picture board before filming it he clearly already knew just what he wanted and just had to find it.
All in all (sorry), an engaging and impressive short (not just technically but also as a rhythmic piece of dance). Those expecting narrative will be a bit let down but generally this really works and is well worth seeing just because of how imaginative and inventive it is in filming a non-dance movement and turning it into this.
