Maybe Todd Haynes has always been too smart for his own good. The 56-year-old director has been making films for nearly 40 years, but in some ways he’s still the Brown semiotics grad who can’t resist the siren’s call of form. As he admits, “I like to set up obstacles at times, because movies are ultimately about what the spectator brings to them.”
That would seem to make him an unlikely candidate to direct a young-adult adaptation, but his “Carol” and “Velvet Goldmine” costume designer Sandy Powell knew better. When she discovered Brian Selznick’s 2011 graphic novel “Wonderstruck,” which intertwines stories from 1927 and 1977 in a young-adult mystery with little dialogue, she encouraged him to adapt it for Haynes on spec.
Indeed, Haynes found the “Wonderstruck” screenplay downright Haynesian. “Brian’s script was so ornately and attentively cinematic,” he said. “Not just the movie references, but the use of...

Bump in the road!
Hannah Jeter looked comfortable and trendy while out and about in N.Y.C.’s TriBeCa neighborhood after spending Mother’s Day by her husband Derek‘s side at the city’s Yankee Stadium.
The expectant mom, 27, looked every bit the maternity-wear maven in a mini denim shirt dress paired with crisp white sneakers, a cross-body bag and aviator shades as she walked around with a friend.
Hannah showed off her growing baby bump just a few days prior, as Derek’s lengthy career with the New York Yankees was honored through a jersey-retirement ceremony on Sunday.

Need to catch up? Check out last week’s Game of Thrones recap here.
Just in case you haven’t perused your on-screen channel guide lately, this season’s Game of Thrones episode descriptions are positively Matthew Weiner-esque in their simplicity/obfuscation.
For those not familiar with the Mad Men creator, whose demands for secrecy in all aspects of his AMC series became legend, prided himself on crafting episode previews and synopses that gave away absolutely nothing about the hour in question. For instance, an installment in which Don would go on a week-long bender might simply say, “Don has a drink.

Where you see scenarios that might result in malpractice and/or harassment lawsuits, the good ladies of Mistresses see only opportunities.
Your married doctor’s heart rate (and “reflex hammer,” ahem) shwing upward as he takes your pulse following a major medical procedure? Hey, there’s nothing like a sexy, testosterone-fueled house call to get you back on your feet (and into five-inch heels) less than 24 hours later!

What. A. Witch.
In this week’s episode, Sleepy Hollow does something very smart by having Katrina choose to stay with Abraham rather than flee with Ichabod.
This is a welcome move for a couple of reasons. For starters, it’s fun to watch the series zig where we expect it to zag; Ich’s been trying to free his wife from enslavement for a season now, and when he finally gets to her, she says, “Thanks, I’m good”?! But on a deeper level, Katrina’s decision raises some important questions the Fox drama can have a great time answering in subsequent installments.

Dan Humphrey is a rock star, you guys. Penn Badgley, who played brooding high school gossip monger (xoxo, y'all) on "Gossip Girl" for five years, is now the singer in a Brooklyn-based indie rock band called Mother.
A cursory YouTube search will lead you to plenty of videos of Badgley singing, and the actor has plenty of music cred thanks to his turn as gone-too-soon singer Jeff Buckley in the 2012 movie "Greetings From Tim Buckley."
Listen to two of Mother's songs below: "Easy," and new single "Victim."...

After impressing everyone with his stellar Jeff Buckley impression in Greetings From Tim Buckley, Penn Badgley is now part of a Brooklyn-based band called Mother. Stereogum is premiering their second single, a track called "Victim" that has an wildly long (and satisfying!) sax solo and a pretty good idea of what Dan Humphrey sounds like when he's singing with his own voice. Brooding synths! Easy there, Lonely Boy.Hear their first single, "Easy", below.

(all spoilers! don’t read till you’ve seen the episode… or unless you don’t care if it’s spoiled for you. this is a love fest only — all complaints and bitching must come from a place of love / previous: “The Day of the Doctor”)
I’ve watched this episode four times now, and it annoys me more every time.
I get it: Steven Moffat wants his Doctor Who to be mythic. He’s been desperately trying to force that to happen for years. And “Time of the Doctor” is now the best-worst example of how mythic cannot be forced. It has to arise naturally. It’s what happens when a well-told story takes on a life of its own, by its own force of awesome. That has already happened to Doctor Who, and it doesn’t need harping on. The Doctor bums around the universe saving planets and...

“Are you sure you wouldn't like to stay just a little while longer?”
Say what you will about Gus Van Sant’s 1998 shot-for-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (and I’ll likely join you), one thing should not be up for debate: It’s a fascinating idea for an experiment - taking one of the many masterworks created by a genius director, then replicating it moment for moment while using the same screenplay and shot list the...

For those who want a fast read and a great laugh, do your self a favor and pickup Penny Marshall's latest memoir, My Mother Was Nuts. The iconic filmmaker and actress (who's famous for name dropping her close A-list friends) reveals all and doesn't mind looking a little nuts herself while doing it. She may have started out in dancing classes as a child to please her mother, but Penny shows (even though she probably wouldn't admit it!) that her carefree lifestyle and ambition is how she ended up becoming the first female director in history to make $100 million at the box office for her work in Big and A League of Their Own. As her motto goes, "Try hard, help your friends, don't get too crazy, have fun."
In the book, Penny pens just about everything. "I hope they enjoy it," she says about readers during her New York press rounds.

If there's one rule governing the animal kingdom, it's this: You do not mess with Mom. Ever. If you come between a mama and her cub, you will lose. They're the most terrifying force in the animal kingdom, and they'll do anything to protect their babies.
Of course, you don't need science to tell you that. You know Mom can always be counted on to swoop in like a cookie-baking Batman, knock out a bully, and take you home for story time. (That reminds us, have you bought her a present yet?)
Movies may not get a lot right (physics, romance, book adaptations), but for the most part, they do right by moms. Especially tough moms. Cinema is packed with gun-toting, take-no-prisoners, willing-to-die mothers, and they're all so inspiring that we hated cutting it off at 9. But we did, and here are the Baddest Muthas in Movies. Add your own...

One of our favorite mantras around the AfterElton offices is “because visibility matters.” Indeed, the idea that gay and bisexual men need to be visible, both to ourselves and to the wider culture, is one of the principle reasons AfterElton.com even exists. After all, it is only by being visible to family, friends and the world that we’ve been able to overcome the stereotypes and bigotry used to justify discrimination against the Glbt community.
That quest for visibility explains why we have done so many polls including the AfterElton Hot 100, the Fifty Greatest Gay Movies, the Top 50 Gay TV Characters, and the 50 Best Gay Books. After all, it’s not as if Entertainment Weekly is going to ask gay and bisexual men which guys we think are the hottest, which movies mean the most to us or, in the case of our latest poll, which celebrities we most admire.
