NEW YORK -- Katie Couric hasn't moved uptown to West 57th Street yet, but the CBS Evening News is making a strong run for second place for the first time in years. CBS Evening News With Bob Schieffer averaged 7 million viewers and a 1.8 rating in the adults 25-54 demographic, according to data released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research. That's only 310,000 viewers from second-place ABC, whose World News Tonight has averaged 7.3 million viewers and a 2.1 rating in the demo. NBC Nightly News remains on top, with an average of 8 million viewers and a 2.1 rating in the demo for the week ending May 1.

It's official: Rosie O'Donnell will join ABC's daytime talk show The View for its 10th season in September. Barbara Walters, creator/executive producer of the show, confirmed the news to audience members and viewers during the 33rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland. The news had been widely buzzed about since syndicated newsmagazine Extra posted it Thursday on its Web site. O'Donnell will replace Meredith Vieira, who is departing to become co-host of NBC's Today. Vieira is replacing Katie Couric, who is leaving Today this month to join CBS Evening News as anchor/managing editor. Walters made the announcement after her tribute to Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Carroll Spinney, the puppeteer who plays the roles of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on PBS' Sesame Street.
Rosie O'Donnell is expected to be named co-host of ABC's daytime talker The View, replacing Meredith Vieira, sources said. ABC is expected to make the announcement today. A rep for the show couldn't be reached late Thursday. Vieira is set to depart The View to join NBC's Today as co-host, a role she'll start in September. She'll replace Katie Couric, who is leaving Today next month to join CBS Evening News as anchor/managing editor.

NEW YORK -- When Bob Schieffer took over at the CBS Evening News a year ago tonight, it was supposed to be only a temporary assignment. The CBS News veteran had long ago thought the route to the anchor chair was closed to him. He had been passed over in 1980 when CBS looked to replace Walter Cronkite, and Dan Rather spent 24 years in the job. Schieffer worked in Washington, anchored the weekend evening news and, beginning in 1993, moderated Face the Nation. So he was as surprised as anyone when CBS chief Leslie Moonves asked him to come to New York to right the ship after the 60 Minutes Wednesday scandal and Rather's departure. But he did it, knowing his network needed him.

NEW YORK -- Longtime TV sports reporter Armen Keteyian will follow his boss, Sean McManus, to CBS News. The Emmy-winning Keteyian will become chief investigative correspondent at CBS News beginning March 6. He's going to be at the top of a new investigative unit that is being formed for the CBS Evening News. Keteyian has spent the past nine years at CBS Sports as a features reporter, hosting Tour de France coverage as well as reporting from the NFL sidelines and courtside at the NCAA Final Four. He also has been a correspondent with HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel, where he has been since 1998.

NEW YORK -- CBS News chief White House correspondent John Roberts will join CNN on Feb. 20 as senior national correspondent. Roberts had been groomed as then-anchor Dan Rather's successor but was passed over several times after Rather left in March. CBS News president Sean McManus made it official during the Television Critics Assn.'s winter press tour when he said that Roberts wouldn't be the CBS Evening News anchor. In an interview Wednesday, Roberts said talks about the future began before the press tour. "We had a discussion about the future. It became clear they were looking in a different direction as far as the main anchor goes," he said. "After you're chief White House correspondent, there's not many other places where you can move to. There's '60 Minutes' and anchor positions, and there wasn't any open at CBS."...
PASADENA -- After much speculation about CBS News making dramatic changes to its signature nightly newscast, newly appointed CBS News president Sean McManus told reporters Wednesday that the network has focused its efforts on finding a new solo anchor to serve as the primary "face" of CBS News. In his first extensive Q&A with reporters since taking on the top job at CBS News in October, McManus, who also is president of CBS Sports, said his goal is to invigorate the long-struggling CBS Evening News with a new anchor, a renewed emphasis on breaking news and a major effort to showcase the skills of CBS News' pool of correspondents. McManus, who spoke during CBS' portion of the winter Television Critics Assn. press tour, steadfastly refused to comment on widespread reports that CBS is angling to lure Today co-host Katie Couric to anchor the CBS Evening News.

NEW YORK -- In its first full week of ratings against ABC's new World News Tonight, the NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams has stretched its lead in total viewers and the adults 25-54 demographic. The NBC newscast averaged 10 million viewers and a 2.7 rating in the demo for the week ending Jan. 13, according to data released Wednesday by Nielsen Media Research. That compared with the Elizabeth Vargas- and Bob Woodruff-anchored broadcast, which averaged 8.9 million viewers and a 2.4 in the demo. CBS Evening News, which has seen something of a resurgence in recent months, came in third with 8 million viewers and a 2.1 in the demo. World News Tonight might be feeling a bit squeezed in the ratings. NBC has grown the gap between it and second-place ABC to 13% in the fourth quarter with total viewers. At the same time, ABC's lead over third-place CBS has fallen 16%.

NEW YORK -- Katie Couric doused persistent rumors that she was going to jump NBC's Today to anchor the CBS Evening News -- or anywhere else, for that matter. At least for the time being. Couric and the rest of the Today crew conducted a conference call with reporters Thursday to celebrate the morning show's 10 years at the top. But as rumors persist that CBS has been doing some heavy-duty wooing to bring Couric to the Tiffany Network, Couric stepped in quickly during the call to make sure the call would be more about Today than her future. "There's been a lot of things out there; I don't know where people are getting them, but I wanted to let you all know that so we didn't have to play games with this call, because there's really nothing to announce and nothing to report," Couric said.

NEW YORK -- Eight months after Peter Jennings signed off for what would be the end of his two-decade run at the anchor desk, ABC News said it would make room for two at World News Tonight. ABC News gave the nod to two rising stars, 43-year-old Elizabeth Vargas and 44-year-old Bob Woodruff, both of whom had been filling in on World News Tonight in recent months. By declining to elevate Charles Gibson, 62, to the anchor chair, ABC News made moves to both protect its present standing at Good Morning America and position itself for the future with the telegenic duo. The decision, long rumored but made official Monday, is the second-to-last pending announcement in a dramatic year or so that has led to the departure of all three network news anchors as well as the presidency of two of the news divisions. Only the CBS Evening News decision remains.

NEW YORK -- A made-over CBS Evening News still might be months away, but new CBS News chief Sean McManus took a big step toward it with a change at the top of the perennially third-place newscast. 60 Minutes veteran Rome Hartman will become executive producer of the nightly newscast beginning Jan. 9. He will take over from Jim Murphy, who in six years had been the longest-serving executive producer in the network's storied history. The fate of the newscast has been in flux since Dan Rather announced his retirement from the anchor desk. Rather left in March and Bob Schieffer was named temporary anchor, but that assignment has stretched longer than expected. In an interview Tuesday, Hartman said Schieffer would be a part of the newscast for at least a while "at the same time we plan for what's next."...

NEW YORK -- For the first time in years, there was something for all three broadcast networks in the weekly evening news ratings report. NBC Nightly News won last week in total viewers, with 10.2 million viewers, according to data released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research. That gave the Brian Williams-anchored newscast the widest gap (1.4 million viewers) between it and second-place World News Tonight since Tom Brokaw left the program in December. And while ABC remained in second place with 8.8 million viewers, coming in stronger than usual was the CBS Evening News, which averaged 8.1 million viewers for the week. It was the only newscast to increase in viewers, up 250,000; the other two lost viewers compared with last year's election-heavy coverage.

NEW YORK -- Fired CBS News producer Mary Mapes claims she was a scapegoat at the network in the wake of what has come to be known as "Memogate", according to an excerpt of her new book to be published in the November issue of Vanity Fair. Mapes, an award-winning producer who uncovered the Abu Ghraib prison scandal earlier in 2004, described how her initial elation over a successful 60 Minutes Wednesday piece on President Bush's military career quickly turned sour as right-wing bloggers mounted an attack on the memos that she said had been cleared by two analysts. She said a "strong and reasoned defense" had been made on the next night's CBS Evening News but that one key source called the next day to say that he believed the documents were not real.

NEW YORK -- NBC Nightly News jumped back atop the evening news race in adults 25-54 last week after ABC won the past two weeks in the vital news demographic. The NBC newscast, anchored by Brian Williams, averaged a 2.5 rating in adults 25-54 for the week ending Oct. 21, according to data released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research. That topped ABC's World News Tonight (2.3) and CBS Evening News (1.9). Among total viewers, NBC had 9.4 million for the week. World News Tonight averaged 8.3 million, and CBS Evening News came in with 7.25 million.

NEW YORK -- The network that made On the Road a household name is hitting the road on a two-week minivan trip from coast to coast to find out how the high price of gasoline is affecting Americans. Correspondent Jim Axelrod and three other CBS News employees are traveling Interstate 80 between New York and San Francisco, taking the CBS Gas Price Patrol minivan and a CBS News Chevrolet Suburban with them for pieces on the CBS Evening News, The Early Show, extensive video and written reports on CBSNews.com as well as CBS Radio and its affiliates along the route. Jim Murphy, executive producer of CBS Evening News, said the idea arose for the reports while trying to figure out how to tell the story of rising gasoline prices in a way that isn't typical. Six months after his comments at the Television Critics Assn.'s winter press tour about remaking CBS Evening News following the departure of Dan Rather, CBS chief Leslie Moonves said the network is in no hurry. Rather left March 9, making way for CBS News veteran correspondent Bob Schieffer to temporarily take over. Schieffer has anchored ever since, though it isn't clear how long his term will be. "As long as we have Schieffer there, we don't have a gun to our head," said Moonves, who also is co-president and co-chief operating officer at Viacom.

LAS VEGAS -- CBS News president Andrew Heyward indicated Thursday that the revamped version of CBS Evening News will shift attention from the anchor toward its correspondents. "The theme is team," Heyward said during his presentation at the annual affiliates meeting here. "We have a great team of correspondents we do want you to know and care about." Heyward also suggested that the network will unveil its plans before the fall season begins and will continue to tinker with elements of the program through the summer. There was no word on who will serve as anchor, but interim anchor Bob Schieffer is not expected to be pressed for permanent duty. Echoing criticism of the current evening news format made in January by Leslie Moonves, Viacom's co-president and co-chief operating officer, Heyward indicated that the program's anchor should "get off the pedestal and out from behind the big desk."...
NEW YORK -- NBC and ABC continued their evening news war into the May sweep, with both networks finding something to cheer about in the results. Meanwhile, Fox News Channel was on a tear in May, while CNN got some unwelcome ratings news for the month just as it was in celebration mode marking its 25th anniversary. Among the broadcasters, NBC Nightly News averaged 8.6 million total viewers during the May sweep, compared with ABC World News Tonight's 8.3 million and the CBS Evening News' 6.6 million, Nielsen Media Research said. Among adults 25-54, NBC and ABC were tied with a 2.3 rating, though ABC had 10,000 more viewers in the demo. CBS averaged a 1.7. NBC said that a resurgent Oprah -- airing on ABC affiliates -- helped give ABC an edge that, in the long run, didn't mean much. NBC Nightly News executive producer Steve Capus said Wednesday that the program remained on top.
NEW YORK -- Today won the ratings battle against Good Morning America during the May sweep in New York, though at 6:30 p.m., NBC Nightly News was a distant second to World News Tonight. WNBC's Today averaged a 3.9 household rating/13 share during the sweep period as measured by Nielsen Media Research from April 28-May 25. That gave it the lead at 7 a.m. over WABC's Good Morning America (3.7/12) and Fox-owned WNYW's Good Day New York (2.2/7). WCBS' The Early Show came in fourth with a 1.7/5. Univision's WXTV averaged a 0.7/3. Today won in New York in all major measures, including adults 18-34, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54. But while Today is holding onto its lead in the morning, NBC Nightly News didn't fare as well at 6:30 p.m. WABC's airing of World News Tonight won a commanding victory with a 6.3/13, compared with NBC Nightly News (4.2/9) and a third-place showing by WXTV with Noticiero Univision (3.0/6), ahead of the CBS Evening News (2.3/5). In local news, WABC won in households between 5-6:30 p.m., with WNBC coming in second and WCBS and WXTV swapping third-place positions at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. At 10 p.m., WNYW won in households with a 4.5/7 over WWOR's 2.3/4 and WPIX's 2.0/3. At 11 p.m., WNBC (7.3/13) beat out WABC (6.4/11), WCBS (5.9/11) and WXTV (2.9./5). In total day, WABC won in households, total persons, 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 on the strength of The Oprah Winfrey Show, which outperformed its closest competitor at 4 p.m. by a 2-to-1 margin. It also got strong ratings for "Jeopardy!" and Wheel of Fortune. WNBC is better later at night, though Tribune-owned the WB Network affiliate WPIX wins in late-night with sitcoms.

NEW YORK -- There will be more experimenting on a new format for CBS Evening News in the coming months as the network decides what direction to go in the post-Dan Rather era. CBS News president Andrew Heyward said the moves would be built around what already has been done with temporary anchor Bob Schieffer, who took over for Rather on March 10. Schieffer has brought new life to the single-anchor format, spending time talking to the correspondents on-air and asking them questions instead of the standard stand-up reports common to the format. Heyward offered few details about the reworking of Evening News, though he said it probably would be built around several correspondents that could include Schieffer, who also is host of Face the Nation and is the network's chief Washington correspondent. "We haven't worked that out yet," Heyward said.
