Mon cousin Jacques tells a sweet story about a country hick who wants to get married.
It is about a farmer's son with few ambitions, looking for an escape from his parents' house and influence. He is constantly treated like a retard. Everyone in the film seems to be somehow related to him and everyone seems to be embarrassed of him. Jacques persists in his attempts to find someone and in the end manages to stumble upon a female version of himself. The happy ending shows the relativity of Jacques's ambitions.
I am not sure how the film relates to the reality of life in French-Belgium.
We see the same atmosphere and characters in Xavier Diskeuve's other film, "La chanson-chanson".
