For the most part, the excellence of HBO’s “Togetherness” isn’t surprising. Co-creators Mark and Jay Duplass have a long track record with films they either wrote and directed themselves or supported in some way, Melanie Lynskey and Amanda Peet have lots of fine performances on their resumes, and even Mark Duplass himself has turned out to be an interesting and versatile actor as his career has evolved. The one unknown is the man who is in many ways the reason the show exists: co-star and co-creator Steve Zissis, a longtime friend and collaborator of the brothers Duplass who hasn’t had many prominent roles outside of their films. As Alex, a talented but underemployed actor crashing on his best friend’s couch, Zissis gets to be funny, charming, and at times heartbreaking over the course of this eight-episode first season. (Four episodes have aired so far; HBO recently ordered a second season.

Phase 4 Films has released a movie trailer for the acclaimed 2010 Sundance Film Festival entry The Freebie. Written, directed and starring Katie Aselton, The Freebie is a romantic drama about a young couple in Los Angeles who try to spice up their marriage by allowing each other a one-night "freebie." You might recognize Aselton from the Duplass brothers films The Puffy Chair, Cyrus, short films such as Scrapple and The Intervention, and the television series The League. She also produced The Puffy Chair and is married to Mark Duplass. I missed this film at Sundance, and have been kicking myself ever since. Watch the trailer now embedded after the jump. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below. Official Info: Written and directed by Katie Aselton Starring Katie Asetlon and Dax Shepard Darren (Dax Shepard) and Annie (Aselton) have an enviable relationship built on love, trust and communication--they still enjoy each...

Who are the Duplass brothers is a question that quite a few people are perhaps asking as the pair enter the spotlight more and more. I have therefore created something of a primer for the Duplass brothers for anyone interested in checking out their work.
Although probably well known to anyone who has followed the progress of the ‘mumblecore movement’, Mark and Jay Duplass have not made too much of an impact on mainstream audiences until now. With the Us release (and UK release in September) of their new film, Cyrus, the pair have done what can only be described as crossed over.
If you’re not familiar with ‘mumblecore’, it is considered by many to be a movement in American cinema led by filmmakers such as Joe Swanberg, Lynn Shelton, the Duplass Brothers and many others who appeared to form a loose collective (although many reject the mumblecore tag...

Synopsis
The Freebie, directed by and starring Katie Aselton, is a romantic drama about a contented, yet sexually frustrated couples’ experiment to allow each other ‘one night off’. Darren (Dax Shepard) and Annie (Aselton) have an enviable relationship built on love, trust and communication – they still enjoy each other’s company and laugh at each other’s jokes, but, unfortunately, they can’t remember the last time they had sex. When a dinner party conversation leads to an honest discussion about the state of their love life they begin to flirt with a way to spice things up. The deal: one night of freedom, no strings attached, no questions asked. Could a “freebie” be the cure for their ailing sex life? And will they go through with it?

SXSW 2010 – Day Five
Running toward the light at the end of the movie tunnel.
Complete Coverage of SXSW 2010
Today is my last day at the festival. I started the day with my first shave since I left Portland. I was set to appear on “Keep it Local” later in the day via Skype, so I figured I should clean up a bit.
My first movie of the day The Freebie.

Everyone in a relationship has at one point joked about "The Freebie". Most of the time this revolves around a really hot, untouchable celebrity that, on the off chance they suddenly decide to stop off in Podunk Nowhere for the sole reason of sleeping with either yourself or your significant other, the relationship wouldn't be ruined because we're all allowed one "freebie". But what if we took a celebrity out of the equation and focused on a married couple who, after seven years together, have found that their sex life has been flushed down the toilet? And what if this married couple decided that the best way to reinvigorate their sex life would be to allow each other one "freebie" with a total stranger?
Directed by and co-starring Katie Aselton, The Freebie looks to explore exactly that: whether or not certain boundaries should be crossed in order to hopefully better a relationship.
