It’s natural that, while you may want to stay on the cutting edge of prestige TV drama and join in all those “How great is Shogun?!” conversations of the moment, there are also times when the world makes you want to shrink down to the size of a Subbuteo player, step into a book illustration from a copy of Thumbelina you owned as a child, and go to sleep underneath a single feather inside a walnut shell.
Those walnut shell moments demand a TV accompaniment that isn’t noisy or confrontational. There should be no difficult thoughts there, just a gentle tide of ‘everything’s okay-ness’ lapping at your brain’s shore. These British TV shows all provide exactly that sense of comfort. Please recommend your own picks below.

Shaquille O’Neal retired from the NBA 13 years ago, but he’s never lost his competitive spirit.
When he’s asked about becoming the second player in NBA history to have three retired jerseys, he asks, “Who’s first?” When he speaks about coming back to the hip-hop music scene, he commands: “I have to make sure they say, ‘Shaq is the best rapper/athlete ever.’”
His competitive nature is also the reason why he’s returning with his wild and epic pre-Super Bowl party Shaq’s Fun House, which is in its sixth year and will take place at Las Vegas’ Xs Nightclub at Wynn on Feb. 9, two days before the Big Game. “I’m a jealous competitor. The reason why we’re doing Shaq’s Fun House? I want people to say that’s the best party ever,” he explains to THR.

It was oddly devastating to learn that ITV’s kid’s channel Citv is to close on 1st September 2023. Many millennials and Gen Xers probably haven’t even seen a Citv show for two decades or more – besides, back in the day it wasn’t even a channel, but just a few after-school hours of programming on the regular ITV channel. So why does its closure leave us feeling like it’s the end of an era?
Because the memories of that era were so, so good, that’s why. We all remember getting home from school, grabbing a glass of squash and a Wagon Wheel and immediately flicking the TV on, and Citv (along with Cbbc – and Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel if you were well posh) kept us company until it was time to eat our spaghetti hoops and turkey twizzlers.

One of the best kids tv shows of the 90s is hoping to make a return as a live action event in London for adults. Mega-fan Glen Middleham and a group of friends and colleagues are hoping to raise enough money to create an authentic experience including many of the games featured in the show.
With help from the original Fun House creative team and legend Pat Sharp supporting the idea, this certainly has the potential to find success much like the Crystal Maze live experience. Teams of 6 reds vs 6 yellows will play wacky games, race the Fun Karts and tackle the ball pool, planned to last 1 hour 45 mins. Alongside Pat, twins Melanie and Martina will be on board.
The Indiegogo campaign is the only place to get tickets. Early supporters can get a 60% discount with 2000 tickets priced at only £25. Pledges of a minimum of £10 will get your name personally...

The Crystal Maze, Cyber Zone, Fort Boyard... We look back at the UK game shows that dared to ask more than just quiz questions...
If the idea of yet another TV game show with an uninspiring presenter and ever so slight spin on the tried and tested Q&A formula fills you with apathy, you're not alone. Although TV quiz shows often rake in the viewers for a relatively low production budget, hence their popularity with TV studios, the whole genre feels a little stagnant. Perhaps it's the rise of the Internet, a general change in viewer culture, and the changing tastes that come with it. While many shows of the past delighted audiences with images of shiny new appliances, cars, and holidays to far-off destinations, today's shows mostly award cold, hard, and boring cash. Great for the winner, but not too interesting for the viewer. Give...

Get Your Own Back was one of the most fun children's game shows of the 1990s. The show - which saw kids covering adults in gunge - returned at this year's Edinburgh Fringe, and is now eyeing a live tour and TV comeback.
Presenter Dave Benson Phillips's career may have been off-screen since his '90s heyday, but he still has fond memories of classic kids' shows and his great friendship with Fun House 'rival' Pat Sharp.
Why are shows like Get Your Own Back and The Crystal Maze still so adored by nostalgic fans?
"A lot of it is because the people of the 1990s were very vocal about the shows they like. We liked the shows then but there were no platforms at the time where you could say to the world, 'I liked that programme, who's with me?'.
"You have in the 1990s, a lot...

Pat Sharp made an outrageously wacky return to Fun House at the weekend, though sadly it was only for a few lucky punters.
The presenter reunited with twins Melanie and Martina Grant for the one-off event, where four family teams competed in a day full of games, gunge and prizes.
Family pub restaurant Fayre & Square teamed up with children's play centre Wacky Warehouse for the event, with the winning team taking home a family holiday worth £1,000.
Games included a quiz round for the children, which saw the parents of the losing teams being gunged, while a Build a Burger relay game featured the children and parents working together to retrieve an oversized burger from a ball-pit.
Sharp said of the day: "The return of Fun House as a one-off live event was as wacky, fun and outrageous as you could wish for!
"It was a brilliant twist to allow adults...

Enter! Stranger! Knightmare is back. Yes, you heard correctly, the bizarre and slightly sinister children's TV classic is returning for a one-off special episode online. Treguard fans rejoice.
Digital Spy is celebrating the return of Knightmare by picking out seven other vintage kids' gameshows that we'd love to see return.
1. Fun House (1989 - 1999 on Citv)
"Wacky! Fun! Crazy! It's outrageous!" Five words that had a whole generation of kids dropping their Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles sticker collection in an instant. Pat Sharp's Fun House was the defining kids' gameshow of the '90s, blending gunge, ball pools, two hot twins and a man with an awful mullet and serving up 25 minutes of giddy tomfoolery. And we still really want a go on the Go-Karts.
2. Finders Keepers (1991 - 1996 on Citv)

This summer he's back doing the day job, bringing last year's Edinburgh show Nunchuck Silver Medallist 2002 to London's Soho Theatre for a five-night run before taking it out on tour.
Ahead of the live dates, Digital Spy caught up with Joel to talk about martial arts, comedy, and just what happened when he tried to explain Pat Sharp to One Direction.
Nunchuck Silver Medallist 2002 - a great title, what's it all about?
"It's true to life! I was Nunchuck Silver Medallist in 2002. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with taekwondo but I was really bad at it. I found myself being really good at nunchucks, because I was such a loner.

Pat Sharp and Lorraine Chase have become the next contestants eliminated from I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!. The Fun House host left the jungle after finishing in the bottom two of the public vote and losing a bushtucker trial to his rival Fatima Whitbread. The pair faced a challenge called 'Fill Your Face - Extreme', which required them to endure having various critters poured into a perspex box on their head. Sharp successfully stared down meal worms, crickets, scorpions and snakes, while Whitbread managed to face soldier crabs, spiders and 7,500 cockroaches. The challenge was halted while medics removed a cockroach that had become lodged in Whitbread's nose. With neither celebrity giving up, hosts Ant & Dec announced that Sharp and Whitbread would compete in a tiebreaker round. The first person to remove three (more)...

I'm a Celebrity's Pat Sharp has told jungle campmates of his reservations about Sinitta and Lorraine Chase. The Fun House star held court with a silent Mark Wright, Crissy Rock, Dougie Poynter and Jessica-Jane Clement over the pair. The 50-year-old first accused 'So Macho' singer Sinitta of seeking tabloid attention by exaggerating her fears in her bushtucker trials. Sharp declared: "It p*sses me off and I don't give a flying f**k anymore. Whatever phobia you have we know that these [creatures] will not hurt you so... just get in there and do what they want you to do. If you come out being all scary just to get in the papers or whatever, then that is pathetic. "I think there's a bit of, 'Oh, look at me'. She's not stupid, and she knows how the world works. She's (more)...

"It's a whole lot of fun, prizes to be won... It's a real crazy show where anything will go," promised the Fun House theme tune to a whole generation of children between 1989 and 1999. However, it wasn't the twins, Fun Karts, gunge or rubbish prizes that we tuned in for. No, it was actually the corny one-liners and relentless enthusiasm of mullet God and show host Pat Sharp that made us run home from school on a Friday to make sure we didn't miss a second of the "wacky" Citv series. We caught up with Pat for a chat about his status as a Digital Spy Icon, the whereabouts of the twins and a possible Fun House revival. Do you think it's strange that people consider you an icon?
"I suppose it's peculiar, but it's nice in a way. I'll tell you why they do it, they do it because people...

Pat Sharp has said that he wants to bring back Fun House with a new adult twist. The Citv children's gameshow ran for eleven series from 1989 to 1999 and Sharp is hopeful that TV producers will consider his proposal for an updated version of the show. "Satellite dishes were on the increase as well, so the viewing figures were dropping at that time. But we are still looking at doing an adult version of the show, which has been talked about for quite a while." He (more)...
