Short reel comedy was partially filmed on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Scouts on their annual retreat are on a camping trip in the wilderness and consisted of a ukulele-playing "Big Tom" Woods (525 pounds and considered a good swimmer) and a tall lean Mark Hamilton (6'7"). When camp leaders would take role it was obvious when these two comedians were not in the morning line up.
Jimmie Adams narrowly escaped death while filming "A Good Scout". While being chased by John Brown (The Wrestling Bear) into the water, the bear playfully held Adams under water and if it were not for the bear's trainer he may have drowned. Also while Adams was playing the part of a camp cook, he mistakenly added flashlight powder (which was being stored in a pepper shaker) to the pot of Mulligan Stew he was preparing and the powder ignited singing the hair on his face as well as some of Virginia Warwick's brunette locks. The next day while filming, Adams was running and tripped over a tent rope staked to the ground and fell resulting in a head laceration.
The story line is that of a snappy young book agent who "reforms" and becomes cook for a group of Boy Scouts in camp.
