The power of streaming services has allowed underrated TV shows like The Office and Breaking Bad to gain huge popularity years after their original air dates. Friends and How I Met Your Mother became even more popular after their endings, with fans still discussing their controversial finales today. Cult classics like Firefly and Freaks and Geeks have gained passionate followings through streaming services, proving that quality TV stands the test of time.
Although there are plenty of great TV shows, some of the very best either accumulated popularity in later seasons or didn't gain the attention they deserved until after they ended. Through the power of streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, binge-worthy TV shows are more accessible than ever before. As audiences were able to view older TV shows easily, tuning in as either new or existing viewers, these titles suddenly gained more attention years after the final credits rolled.

Lily's interference causes major relationship problems for her friends in How I Met Your Mother. Some sitcom characters' terrible actions are glossed over, like Andy dating a high school student in The Office. Characters in comedy shows like Modern Family often forgive and forget disturbing behavior that should be addressed.
Warning: This article discusses topics of a mature nature, including sexual assault.
Sitcom characters are some of the wildest personalities to grace the TV screen, but some of their actions are so unbelievable that it's confusing that they are ever forgiven. The best sitcoms often include brilliant and complex characters for audiences to fall in love with. While they face difficult storylines at times, this is usually a part of character development, and they are better off for it. However, this isn't always the case for some characters whose actions should continue to be highlighted for long after they happen.

The 21st century saw the debut of many great comedy shows, proving that the traditional sitcom format was in dire need of reinvention. Compared to the standard “nuclear family” style programs of the 1980s and 1990s, the new century’s comedies pushed the boundaries with their content, broke traditional rules of formatting, and opened themselves up to more diverse creative perspectives. While programs like The Office and How I Met Your Mother became major hits that secured significant ratings and awards success, many of the best comedies of the era earned more niche followings. Although it never became “mainstream,” the comedy series Community stood out for its memorable characters, inventive storylines, and self-referential humor. While creator Dan Harmon has teased the possibility of a continuation that would unite the original cast, Community is best left alone without a feature film spinoff.

While David Crane and Marta Kauffman’s Friends has officially been off the air for two decades, it’s hard not to miss the camaraderie, meaningful connections, and punchlines. Considered one of the most rewatchable shows out there, the 1990s sitcom centered on a group of six friends living in the heart of the Big Apple. Needless to say, no one told us that we would miss Friends this hard; you can chock it up to nostalgia or its massive cultural impact, but the show left a crater-sized hole in viewers’ hearts. But here’s the good news: lots of shows have borrowed vital elements from Friends over the years, from How I Met Your Mother to Happy Endings, as tales of tight-knit friend groups have dominated the small screen.

There is a curious undercurrent in TV history that is so prevalent that it almost seems like a curse: that is the popular TV series that absolutely crashes and burns on the landing, offering a terrible ending that leaves a sour note in the memory of the devoted fans who have been following the show since the beginning. Otherwise beloved series that drew viewers in for years, like Seinfeld, Lost, and Game of Thrones, are some of the most classic examples of shows that stumbled across the finish line. However, the finale of How I Met Your Mother easily holds one of the top slots of all time in the category of disappointing finales to beloved and popular TV series. The twist ending and the resolution to the main character arcs left many fans in disbelief as to how everything came to a close in the story. Fortunately enough, though,...

After nine seasons, a decade, and a spin-off series, sometimes it's nice to sit back and watch How I Met Your Mother from where it all started: with Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and the long, long (did we mention long?) story of how he met his wife. Even in the era of Too Much TV, there are multiple good reasons to blow off the new and rewatch a TV show you've seen many times before. Sometimes, it's valuable to revisit something you watched when you were younger, giving you an opportunity to appreciate it from a more adult perspective. There's also the comfort that comes from re-engaging with a familiar rhythm of storytelling, not to mention being reunited with all your old friends again. And there's the joy of discovering a detail that you might have missed in previous rewatchings — a secret surprise that's been waiting for years for you to discover it.

In July 2023, near the peak of animosity between scribes and studios during the writers strike, a picket outside ABC’s The View in New York welcomed an ally: Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan. Behind closed doors, the writers union had been sharing concerns of a wave of mergers that it said left just a handful of studios like Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Amazon as the lone arbiters of which movies and TV shows are made, what consumers watch and how they can watch it. Flanked by protest signs name-checking Wbd boss David Zaslav to “just give up one yacht” and chants embracing themes of “exploitation,” “concentrated power” and “corporate giants,” Khan delivered a fiery speech that also effectively served as a signal to moguls seeking more mergers and acquisitions.
Since that time, feverish speculation has centered on Shari Redstone relinquishing control of Paramount Global in a megadeal or Warner Bros.

Overused TV tropes can ruin a series by feeling predictable and tiring to viewers, leading to disappointment. Tropes like will-they-won't-they romances, Flanderization, and forced love triangles can weaken a TV show's quality. Red herrings, the chosen one trope, and constant cliffhangers, if not done effectively, can cheapen a show's storytelling.
Despite the desire for originality and new ideas from TV shows, so many have been plagued by the overuse of clichéd tropes that on some occasions can entirely ruin a series. A trope was a concept or idea that got repeated time and time again until it got to the point where audiences recognized them as an accepted convention that could be used to communicate meaning and symbolism to the viewer. Tropes date back to the earliest days of storytelling as audiences and readers recognized recurring motifs and common things that were continually repeated.

A new report in Variety lays out a detailed argument from British screenwriter Simon Stephenson alleging that the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Focus Features’ widely praised “The Holdovers” is extremely similar to his own 2013 Black List spec script, “Frisco” — and that, according to Stephenson, “Holdovers” director Alexander Payne likely read that script.
“The Holdovers” has only one credited screenwriter: David Hemingson, who was an entertainment lawyer before becoming a TV writer and producer in the late ’90s, working on shows such as “Just Shoot Me!,” “Kitchen Confidential,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and “Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23.” “The Holdovers” is his first produced feature.
IndieWire has reached out to Focus, WGA West, and to reps for Payne, Hemingson, and Stephenson, but has not yet received a response.

Kutner was introduced in season 4 as one of a large pool of applicants whom Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) forced to compete for a consultant position. Though he was fired and rehired numerous times throughout the competition, Kutner ultimately...

Looking back at Kyle MacLachlan's career today, there's no denying that he's a great actor. Not only did he give a beloved performance as FBI agent Dale Cooper in the mysterious drama series "Twin Peaks," but he also went on to play two different versions of Cooper (or possibly three) in "Twin Peaks: The Return." He's also impressed mainstream audiences with his deranged portrayal of The Captain on "How I Met Your Mother," not to mention his recurring role as the wacky mayor in "Portlandia." And of course, who could forget that "Law & Order" episode where MacLachlan's character publicly shoots a child for totally justified reasons? The clip goes viral on Twitter every month or so, mainly because of how delightful it is to watch MacLachlan completely sell the ridiculous material the writers gave him.
But back when he was filming David Lynch's better-than-you've-heard 1984 adaptation of "Dune," however,...

Do you remember the good old days? When we used to be glued to those awesome US and UK TV shows! Like “The Vampire Diaries” for teen girls, “Heroes” for the comic book geeks, “How I Met Your Mother” for the hopeless romantics, and “24” for the thrill-seekers. But man, we were stuck with dial-up before we had super-fast internet. Watching a show meant catching it live or waiting for a rerun or the DVD release. It was a totally different vibe growing up back then, you know?
And let’s talk about India, where TV serials ruled the roost, airing every day instead of once a week like in the West. Sure, folks used to clown them for being mass-produced junk, but they were our bread and butter back then. Then came the internet boom, bringing with...

Britney Spears' film career began and ended with the coming-of-age movie Crossroads in 2002. Spears struggled to separate herself from her character Lucy in Crossroads, which contributed to her decision to quit acting. Spears auditioned for The Notebook in 2004 but lost the part to Rachel McAdams, which turned out to be a good thing since it allowed Spears to focus on her music career instead.
Although she was heavily involved in the inception of the film, Britney Spears never made another movie after 2002's Crossroads. Other than a cameo as a flight attendant in 2001’s Longshot, Crossroads served as Spears' official feature film debut. Spears actually came up with the idea for the coming-of-age movie herself: three childhood best friends who grew apart as teenagers reconnect on a cross-country road trip after high school graduation. How I Met Your Mother is a successful sitcom known for its insightful character development, clever storylines, and relatable situations. It isn't surprising, then, that this TV series contains plenty of outstanding episodes that fully delve into a character's background, motivations, and fears.
For example, while Robin is a woman who doesn't often identify with feminine qualities, she used to be a stereotypical pop star in Canada. But on the flip side, while Barney has been shown as a wealthy playboy, he once had a softer side. In the end, in the show's nine seasons, How I Met Your Mother has a select few that show the true colors of its characters, helping to define even their smallest aspects.

The following contains major spoilers for the overall Dune franchise.
Fans of author Frank Herbert's classic Dune novels are in for a treat when Dune: Part Two comes out. Already, director Denis Villeneuve's hit movie Dune helped revitalize this fascinating sci-fi tale, bringing in countless new fans to Herbert's vision. The story of Dune has a lot of moving parts, but fans can boil it down to just one young man in particular: Paul Atreides. Paul's character arc is one of hardship, violence, triumph, tragedy, and hope for the future.
For now in the Dune movie franchise, Paul feels like a helpless young man getting whisked along the currents of fate as various factions fight over the desert world Arrakis aka Dune, but that will all soon change. As the novel readers already know, Paul Atreides will become more than a local hero or sympathetic underdog in the battle for Arrakis' future.

The Holdovers collaborators, director Alexander Payne and screenwriter David Hemingson, are working on another film together—a Western, in fact—and during a Q&a following a screening of The Holdovers at Soho House in West Hollywood on Friday, Hemingson revealed there’s a part earmarked for Paul Giamatti.
“I’ve been sworn to secrecy,” Hemingson said, “but what I will say is we’ve written him a part and I hope he’ll do it.”
If Giamatti, who stars in The Holdovers, accepts, it would be his third collaboration with Payne since Sideways in 2004.
Hemingson went on to reveal some details of the new project: “Alexander and I are writing a Western together, so we’re going to co-write something, and it’s set in Nebraska in 1886, and it’s like no Western you have ever seen before, because it’s an Alexander Payne Western. So, all those interpersonal dynamics,...

Shows like How I Met Your Mother thrive on fun characters, great chemistry, and a reliable level of appeal to viewers everywhere. Despite the controversial final episode, Himym remains beloved even a decade after it ended, highlighting its enduring popularity. With a variety of streaming services available now, there are still many shows like Himym out there waiting to be discovered by viewers.
Shows like How I Met Your Mother will always remain popular thanks to the mixture of fun characters with great chemistry, and a level of reliability with its target audience. When Himym initially went off the air in 2014, it left a sitcom-shaped hole in the television schedule for many fans. The thirst for good, light-hearted comedies that deal with the topics of friendship, love, and, to an extent, family, is never-ending. But thankfully for viewers everywhere, television and streaming services are the gifts that keep on giving.

How I Met Your Mother is one of the most beloved sitcoms of the 21st century. Even still, while the show was beloved, one particular season doomed the series to jump the shark. In the end, many factors contributed to a lackluster finale, but what made it so surprising was how late the series chose to jump the shark.

One of the most popular sitcoms of the 2000s and 2010s, How I Met Your Mother's success is in great part thanks to its outstanding cast. Formed by lesser-known actors at the time, like Josh Radnor and Cobie Smulders, as well as popular comedy actors like Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan, this cast proved to be an excellent choice in terms of chemistry, acting skills, and energy.
A lot of sitcom actors, especially sitcoms as iconic as How I Met Your Mother, tend to disappear from the media when the shows are over. However, the cast of How I Met Your Mother has gone on to have fantastic careers. For example, Neil Patrick Harris recently appeared in the Doctor Who episode "The Giggle," and Cobie Smulders embodied S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Big Bang Theory rarely focused on darker themes and had few tragic moments, making them more impactful when they did occur. Sheldon's vulnerable admission about the death of Professor Proton was undercut by the character's later return, cheapening his earlier grief. Sheldon could have realized the importance of prioritizing Amy without outside intervention, making him a more rounded character.

Neon Intl. has added to its growing EFM slate with Jason Buxton’s “Sharp Corner,” starring Ben Foster and Cobie Smulders. The company, launched last year as the sales arm of Neon, will launch the project in Berlin.
The under-the-radar feature, now in post-production, is based on the short story from Russell Wangersky’s Giller Prize-shortlisted collection “Whirl Away,” and marks Buxton’s follow up to his debut film, 2012’s ”Blackbird,” which won the best first feature in Toronto and picked up the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes Écrans Juniors.
“Sharp Corner” follows a dedicated family man who becomes obsessed with saving the lives of the car accident victims on the sharp corner in front of his house — an obsession that could cost him everything.
The film, a Canadian-Irish co-production, is produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada, the Canada Media Fund, Screen Nova Scotia, Ontario Creates and in association with Bell Media/Crave.

How I Met Your Father was cancelled after two seasons, making it unlikely that Sophie's story will receive a proper conclusion. Disney executive Craig Erwich says there are no current plans to give the series a conclusion of some kind. While there is no news yet about a special or movie to tie up loose ends, the possibility remains open for future development if renewed interest arises.

Alyson Hannigan and Seth Green, who played Willow and Oz on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, recently reunited to celebrate Green's birthday. Green and Hannigan have previously worked together outside of Buffy, including an episode of How I Met Your Mother and the film My Stepmother Is an Alien. The chemistry between Willow and Oz on Buffy has left a lasting legacy, with hopes for another on-screen reunion between the actors.
The stars of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, including Alyson Hannigan and Seth Green, have a mini-reunion. In the early seasons of Buffy, Willow (Hannigan) and Oz (Green) were one of the most popular Buffy couples. Even though Oz exited the show by season 4, while Willow entered into a fan-favorite relationship with Tara Maclay (Amber Benson), Oz remained one of the more fondly remembered and underutilized characters in the entire Buffyverse.

Suzie Plakson has played multiple characters in Star Trek, including a Vulcan, a half-Klingon/half-human, a member of the Q Continuum, and an Andorian. Lt. Selar, portrayed by Plakson, appears in one episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation as part of the medical team on the USS Enterprise-d. Miss Q, another character played by Plakson, appears in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager and has a romantic connection with Q in the Q Continuum.
Suzie Plakson has played four different Star Trek characters throughout her career. Because of the often elaborate make-up and prosthetics necessary for Star Trek aliens, actors can often portray multiple characters without causing confusion. The beloved procedural crime show "Bones" ran for an impressive 12 seasons, continuing the upward TV star trajectory for David Boreanaz after his work on shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," and helping to launch Emily Deschanel to become a household name after a slew of small roles in a handful of TV shows and movies.
As the co-stars of "Bones," Deschanel and Boreanaz naturally appeared in every single episode of the series. And while viewers know guest stars didn't pop up nearly as frequently, some casual watchers may think that some of the more familiar faces might have at least popped up one time per season. But as it turns out, out of all of the guest stars who graced the series from 2005-2017, only one performer managed to make at least one appearance across all 12 seasons: Patricia Belcher, who played Caroline Julian, a federal prosecutor for the U.

Valentine's Day can be a disaster, just like in TV shows - chaos, struggles with finding love, and love triangles are all possible. Monica's homemade gift to Chandler in Friends was a flop - an old mixtape from his ex was not romantic at all. Robin's Valentine's Day in How I Met Your Mother was ruined when she learned she was infertile and ended up breaking up with Kevin.
With Valentine's Day approaching, there are plenty of great examples in TV that prove that the celebration of love and romance could be a lot worse. It's quite common to see a TV show broadcast a holiday special episode, and while Valentine's Day isn't at the top of the priority order, there have still been some brilliant Valentine's Day episodes. While many spend the day with their significant other in bliss, this isn't always the case for some TV characters.
Like any holiday,...

If one were to base their expectations for their twenties and early thirties purely on television, they’d almost certainly be disappointed. Despite the enduring popularity of sitcoms like Friends, How I Met Your Mother, and New Girl, very few of us spend these years conveniently sharing an apartment building with all of our closest friends and frequenting the same restaurant or bar together every evening. In reality, young adulthood can often be just as eye-opening, confusing, and difficult to navigate as adolescence, even if television rarely reflects that. Those seeking a little more realism in stories about this chapter of life may find it in a surprising new source: Netflix’s One Day.
