Rod Holcomb, an Emmy-winning TV director of “ER,” “Lost” and other series, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 80.
Holcomb was best known for directing both the pilot and the series finale of “ER,” winning an Emmy for that farewell episode in 2009. He was nominated four four Primetime Emmys over his career, and also nominated for three DGA awards — winning one in 1995 for the “ER” pilot. Holcomb directed 21 pilots over his career, with the remarkable track record of 15 going to series.
“Every good director will elevate the material on the page. His job is to elevate it visually, to give it the weight of an art form,” Holcomb told Variety in 2011. “In a way, it’s easier to determine with a show that you know very well as a viewer, and if you know the contours and the voice of the show, then you can more easily answer some key questions.

Chicago – Telling the story of Alan Turing – the British closeted gay man who broke a Nazi code in World War II, saving millions of lives – was put upon the talented shoulders of two disparate individuals. Screenwriter Graham Moore – from Chicago – and Norwegian director Morten Tyldum collaborated on “The Imitation Game.”
It was a bit of luck and happenstance that brought the two creators together (see below), but their passion for properly vetting the complex story and distilling it to the audience was a wise and loving process. Graham Moore was born in the South Side of Chicago, but knew of Turing from his other life in computers and science. Morten Tyldum is a notable filmmaker from Norway, who was looking for his first American project. They were supported by the amazing performance of Benedict Cumberbatch in his portrayal of Alan Turing, and a host of other fine British actors, including Keira Knightley.

We're still not sure how the first season of MTV's "Teen Wolf" ended up being as good as it was, but we're not complaining! Nor is there much to complain about the DVD package coming to us on May 22nd, which includes an exclusive extended season finale.

HollywoodNews.com: The American Cinema Editors have named two awards champs — three-time Emmy winner Michael Brown and three-time Oscar champ Michael Kahn — as recipients of this year’s lifetime achievement awards. The honors will be bestowed on the two men at the 61st annual edition of the Eddies on Feb. 19 at the Beverly Hilton. In making the announcement, the Ace Board of Directors cited the extensive credits of the two men.
Michael Brown, A.C.E., received his first editing credit on “Green Acres” in 1967. Getting his feet wet in sitcoms was a great foundation for a career that skewed slowly to the more serious side of television in shows like “Banyon” and “The Streets of San Francisco” (1972). After editing his first Mow — the pilot for Mtm Enterprises’ “Three for the Road” (1975) — he began editing pilots, TV movies and mini-series along with a few theatrical features. Michael...

A day after Codebreakers wrapped up production, ESPN Original Entertainment said it will premiere the movie Dec. 10 on both ESPN and ESPNU. Codebreakers, starring Scott Glenn, tells the story of the 1951 Army football team that saw several members (including the coach's son) expelled for cheating on tests in a scandal that rocked West Point and beyond. While it deals with an academic scandal, executive producer Orly Adelson said Sunday afternoon that Codebreakers is still very much a sports story. One of the major scenes is a staging of the 1951 Army-Navy football game, Adelson said. Adelson and others associated with ESPN discussed Codebreakers, another upcoming movie Four Minutes and ESPN2's new ESPN Hollywood, a nightly series that will debut Aug. 15, at the Television Critics Assn.'s summer press tour at the Beverly Hilton.
