Although nicely produced, this second world war yarn is bland and predictable
Cross of Honour is a handsomely produced, well intended but bland and TV-movieish second world war yarn, based on a true story. Two aircrews are shot down over the snowy wastelands of Norway in April 1940: one German, one British. Lachlan Nieboer plays Captain Davenport, as elegant as a young Hugh Grant; Rupert Grint is Gunner Smith, a feisty scouser. On the German side, Florian Lukas plays Lieutenant Schopis, Stig Henrik Hoff is Sergeant Strunk and David Kross (from The Reader) plays junior officer Schwartz, a callow Hitler enthusiast who carries around a signed copy of Mein Kampf. The crews chance on the same deserted hunting lodge. The Luger-flourishing Germans try to hold the Brits captive, but soon they realise that to survive they will have to work together – and even be friends. It's all a bit tame,...

Hitler wine bottles have been called 'offensive' by tourists. Visitors to the city of Garda in Italy have been shocked by bottles of wine on sale in supermarkets that featured pictures of Hitler in various poses. One bottle had an image of Hitler with his arm raised, another is labelled 'Mein Kampf" and another was called "Ein volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer" (one people, one empire, one Fuhrer). Visitor Michael Hirsch told The Daily Telegraph: "It is very shocking and startling to us. We would (more)...

A play based on Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik's manifesto, "2083: A European Declaration of Independence" is in production for its second staging in the city where his attacks started, Afp reports.
Denmark theater Cafe Teatret produced and plans to premiere the play, titled "Manifesto 2083," in August, followed by the second production at the Dramatikken Hus (Drama House) in Oslo.
The play is based off Breivik's manifesto which documents his extremist, far-right ideology and two years of preparation for multiple attacks, including details about the car bomb he planted outside Oslo government buildings killing eight people, and the mass shooting on the island of Utoya killing 69 people on July 22, 2011. Trials for the attacks begin in April.
The controversial play is drawing heavy criticism, similar to the criticism of 2009's "Mein Kampf," based on Adolf Hitler's autobiography. Head of the association of victims of the attack, Trond Henry Blattmann, who...

Title: Garbo: The Spy First Run Features Directed By: Edmon Roch Written By: Edmon Roch, Isaki Lacuesta, María Hervera Cast: Juan Pujol García, Nigel West, Mark Seaman, Xavier Vinader, The Countess of Romanones Aline Griffith Screened at: Review 2, NYC, 11/2/11 Opens: November 18, 2011 In his psychotic memoir “Mein Kampf,” Hitler stated the principle of the Big Lie; that is, the larger the lie, the more likely that people will accept it as truth. This is because most people tell small lies and can tell when others are fibbing. When a lie is colossal, most people cannot believe that anyone could make up such extreme falsehoods. Luckily for us...

Boardwalk Empire will return for a third season reports Deadline. The second season still holds strong on Sunday nights for HBO and has become required viewing in my TV line-up. The show performed well at the recent Emmy Awards winning eight awards. It has one of the best cast and crews on any TV show today with Steve Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald and Michael Pitt, Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg.
I can’t wait to see where the show is going to go as the 1920′s progresses; talking movies were invented in 1923, J. Edgar Hoover was appointed FBI director in 1924, and Hitler publishes Mein Kampf in 1925. Needless to say, as long as the show keeps going, it’s going nothing to worry about for historical material.

When Hank Williams Jr. stopped by Fox & Friends this morning, co-host Brian Kilmeade noted that Williams is best known for his country music and his and many years as the voice of Monday Night Football. But there are so many more layers to the Hank Williams Jr. Onion: “He knows a little about politics, too!” Little being the operative word! Williams was in rare form, describing this summer’s “Golf Summit” — the mid-June match in which President Obama and Speaker Boehner apparently walloped Vice President Biden and Ohio’s Governor Kasich — as “One of the biggest political mistakes ever,” which...

He played some of the most sublime chess ever seen. Then, as a new book and film illustrate, he disappeared from view. What made such a brilliant mind go into freefall?
In 1999, I spent three days sitting in a variety of thermal baths dotted around Budapest. As grand and attractive as the Hungarian capital's spas are, I wasn't stewing myself for therapeutic or leisure purposes. Instead, I was waiting for someone I'd been told frequented the baths, someone who was said to be a genius and a paranoid obsessive, the greatest chess player who ever lived and an obnoxious crackpot. I was looking for Bobby Fischer.
For the last four decades of his life, that's what people did with Fischer – they looked for him. Fans, journalists, biographers, friends, they all tried to find this mythical creature, either in person or in that fabulous abstract realm that he continued to haunt: chess.

The 22 year old accused of shooting Rep. Giffords left digital fingerprints that point to a young man obsessed with government control, radical politics, and sleep deprivation.
Jared Lee Loughner left a long Internet trail. The 22 year old accused of the murder of at least six people in Tucson and the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords posted rambling missives on YouTube and MySpace about the U.S. government and mind control, creating one's own currency, grammar, and sleepwalking.

Loughner has been described as a white male with short, dark hair. In a YouTube video set against electronic music, he rails against government control of currency, and at one point seems to indicate he may suffer from insomnia. In a Socratic style he uses throughout his writing, Loughner states:

Goebbels' propaganda film is now showing in another guise. Which shows why Germany is a unique case for censorship
A new film is roiling the waters in Germany. Jud Süss: A Film Without a Conscience was greeted with boos at a press screening at the Berlinale, the Berlin international film festival. The film is best described as a film within a film. It re-enacts parts of the most infamous anti-Semitic propaganda film of all times, Jud Süss, while simultaneously telling the back story, albeit in somewhat fictionalised form, about the making of this film.
Jud Süss, whose executive producer was Josef Goebbels, premiered in 1940 at more than 80 cinemas in Berlin alone. Over 20 million Germans eventually saw it. It also won large audiences in other European countries. It depicts Jews as not only sneaky, conniving and physically revolting, but also posing a direct danger to the non-Jews around them. Erik Larsen weighed in yesterday on Neil Gaiman's recent court dealings with Todd McFarlane over disputed character rights related to "Spawn," and both Gaiman and McFarlane have since posted their own opinions on the matter, prompting another response from Larsen.
Meanwhile, Twitter was fluttering with Bill Cosby death rumors yesterday. Mike Benson expressed relief when those subsided, though the comics and entertainment industry in general mourned the loss of Superman and James Bond screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz. Geoff Johns in particular noted his passing. Find out what he said after the jump where you'll also see a "Lone Wolf and Cub" casting pick from Chris Weston.

When word spread this month that Bollywood planned a movie called "Dear Friend Hitler," screenwriter Nalin Singh was genuinely shocked it stirred even a small controversy. The media expressed disdain, Jewish groups were horrified and his lead actor . though a bit baffled by the reaction . quit. While such a response would seem, if anything, understated in much of the world, Singh had reason to believe his film would not generate even a ripple of scandal in India. Here, Hitler is not viewed as the personification of evil, but with an attitude of morally ambiguous fascination. He is seen as a management guru . akin to Machiavelli or Sun Tzu . by business students, and an object of wonder by people craving order amid the chaos of India."Indians still have a curiosity about Hitler. The Western audience has seen a lot of films on Hitler, but there was no Hindi film on him,...

Sandra, you need to put as much distance between yourself and your despicable husband of five years as possible. The ever-increasing revelations about his ties to Nazism will begin to hurt you and your clean-as-a-whistle reputation and career if you don't make a clean break. A disturbing photo of Jesse surfaced a couple of weeks ago with your husband in an SS hat making a Nazi salute. Now, in a new story posted by RadarOnline today, a source claims that Jesse had a copy of Hitler's horrific anti-Semitic screed, Mein Kampf, in his West Coast Choppers office, as well as a Nazi uniform. Plus, he carried on an 11 month affair with Michelle "Bombshell" McGee, who has a swastika tattooed on her nether regions and a portfolio of photo shoots in Nazi regalia. The associations between Jesse and Nazism just keep...

It's a wrap! The Martin Gropius Bau is empty and the final pickups follow. This is a work in progress and readers are invited and welcome to contribute. Presales have returned in reaction to the reduced number of finished films on offer over the past two markets. Presales applies across the board from Us to French and even Italian films. English language films are increasingly coming out of the major non English language territories but local product is impacting sales on Us films internationally. Business was quickly wrapped up but it was done with a healthy number of buys reported. Lower prices have become accepted but the market must have product as this event proved.

After a long, brutal and successful career as a mafia tycoon in Marseilles, Charly Matteï has finally gone into retirement. For some years, he has lived a quiet life devoted to his mother, wife and two young children. Then, one morning, he is left for dead in a subterranean parking near the old port with 22 bullets in his body. Somehow he survives, gets his nickname of “l’Immortel” out of it, and goes looking for revenge.
*Dramatic chords*
There. That’s the pitch. This is Richard Berry latest movie, starring Jean Reno, Kad Merad, Jean Pierre Daroussin and Marina Foïs. It’s adapted from the eponym Franz-Olivier Giesbert's novel, narrating and improving the “thrilling” life of a real French mafia tycoon: Jacky Imbert.

This message came to me from a reader named Peter Svensland. He and a friend have been debating about my qualities as a film critic, and they've involved a considerable critic, Dan Schneider, in their discussion. I will say that he has given the question a surprising amount of thought and attention over the years, and may well be correct in some aspects. What his analysis gives me is a renewed respect and curiosity about his own work.

Do you remember that young boy who starred with Omar Sharif in Monsieur Ibrahim? He's a young French actor and it was his first ever feature film, and he was incredible! What's his name again? Yes, its Pierre Boulanger! Oh, how about that naughty young boy who was cast alongside Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal, his name if I recall correctly is Andrew Simpson, where is he now? How about that young and exciting German actor who portrayed the teenage Adolf Hitler in Mein Kampf? Yes, Tom Shilling! And that awesome young guy in AfterSchool? I need to know if he has done more movies! Ezra Miller!

Sacha Baron Cohen has scored an unusual coup ... for a man. In full-on Brüno mode, he's this month's cover girl for the fashion mag Marie Claire. Striking some unconventional poses with and on fashion models, he muses "Vy do zey give out Nobel prizes for physics, medicine und svimming, but not for fashion?" It may not be Nobel prize material, but his skin-tight leopard print leotard with matching hat and boots is definitely an original look.
Cohen is also fully prepared to share his own fashion perspective in the accompanying interview. He goes through the alphabet, finding provocative material in each letter. In this fashion litany, L is for "Little black child... thanks to Madonna und Brüno, it’s zis season’s vardrobe essential." Definitely meow, but that's just the tip of the outrage. Since he's playing a gay Austrian fashionista, he takes time out to dish out some choice...

The word “notorious” can be loosely tossed around when describing a filmmaker that veers even slightly outside of mainstream cinematic confines, but when applied to Bruce Labruce, the term couldn’t be more accurate. Scenes of hardcore gay porn, Nazi fetishism and explicit gore, either separately or brazenly combined, are just a few of the subjects Labruce explores in films like No Skin Off My Ass, Skin Gang, Super 8 1/2, Hustler White and The Raspberry Reich.
Labruce’s latest film, Otto; Or, Up With Dead People, is a meditation on homosexuality, cinema and intimate relationships through the filter of a zombie flick. The first of his films to employ a full-on horror convention (zombies), Otto furthers Labruce’s boundary pushing reputation. And yet, mainstream audiences have taken the bait. Yes, it’s true—Otto is the first zombie film with hardcore gay porn scenes to screen at Sundance.
Labruce generously took...

You've probably heard the schoolyard snap: "Yo'mama's so dumb she failed a Rorschach test." I never thought I'd find a case where it's actually true, but lo and behold, Arne Starr pointed me to one.
Perhaps you know the old joke: A man goes to a psychologist and says, "Doc, I got a real problem... I can't stop thinking about sex."
The psychologist says, "Well let's see what we can find out", and pulls out his ink blots. "What is this a picture of?"
The man looks the picture upside down then turns it around and states, "That's a man and a woman on a bed making love."
"Uh-huh. And what is this a picture of?"
"Well, that's a man and a woman on a bicycle making love."
The psychologist tries again with the third ink blot. "What is this a picture of?"
"Obviously, that's a man and a woman in a volcano making love.
