How does one make a movie about a hot-button political topic that's divided the nation for sixty years? With the fate of ABC’s Happy Endings decided, it has officially become a member of the “Gone Too Soon” club, TV shows that were snuffed out before they had a chance to flourish … or jump the shark. The club used to be headed by the Holy Trinity of Arrested Development/Freaks & Geeks/Firefly, but Arrested Development has been miraculously resurrected, so let’s put … I don’t know … Pushing Daisies in its place.
While we mourn Happy Endings, let’s take a third trip down TV memory lane. In the first Snuffed Out, we paid tribute to the aforementioned Daisies, as well as Wonderfalls, Nightman, The Book Of Daniel, Popular, The Five Mrs. Buchanans, The Flash, Eerie Indiana, It’s All Relative, Paper Dolls and the newly-resurrected Veronica Mars.
The second Snuffed Out honored The Comeback, It Had To Be You, Mission Genesis, Flo, Women of The House, Baywatch Nights,...

Turns out, some Mad Men viewers guessed right about Bob Benson‘s secret. Too bad they aren’t the ones who picked “Peggy and Pete‘s time-traveler love child, Paul Paulson.” (I hope you weren’t spoiled by the revelation that Mad Men wasn’t taking on time travel.)
I like to think Dillahunt‘s Burn Notice character is still angry
about The Book Of Daniel getting cancelled.
I guess Garret Dillahunt was tired of being sweet and lovable but dim on Raising Hope because EW reports are that he’s returning to Burn Notice.
Lifetime’s Lizzie Borden movie just got more interesting now that the cast has added Billy Campbell and Clea Duvall. Campbell will play Lizzie’s lawyer, while Duvall will play her sister.

This will be a year of sad countdowns, as we are set to lose the Eleventh Doctor, and Warehouse 13 heads into its final season. It’s at least a blessing that we know, and more important the writers know, far in advance, so that the final seasons for a beloved character and a beloved show will be developed appropriately.
Syfy today announced that production of Warehouse 13‘s final season will begin later this month. Here’s the press release:
Warehouse 13 To Open Its Doors For The Final Time On June 24Th
New York – June 6, 2013 – Syfy announced today that Warehouse 13, the Emmy Award-nominated, long-running hit series, will commence production on its fifth and final season June 24th in Toronto.
The six all-new episodes of Season 5 will premiere in 2014.

Syfy has announced the dates for its upcoming season/series premieres and finales, and it holds a lot of promise as well as at least one laugh. Season finales have been set for Being Human – But Where’S The Next Season Renewal, Syfy? Let’S Get Going On That – and Lost Girl, as well as new unscripted offerings Robot Combat League and Stranded. Premiere dates, as we’ve already told you, for the Mmo game-linked Defiance and for fan favorite Warehouse 13 are now confirmed, as well as the return of Ghost Hunters.
New unscripted series announced include a paranormal show with a southern accent, Deep South Paranormal, and a William Shatner-hosted – Yes, William Shatner – examination of stories of the bizarre and unexplained entitled Weird or What? Yes, a nice title, but once again the Syfy Original Movie has offered up the best chuckleworthy title of the season: Stonados.

After being targeted by the boycott-happy One Million Moms group, NBC's newest gay-friendly show now faces blackout in Utah. Ksl-tv, the Peacock's Salt Lake City affiliate (which just happens to be owned by the Mormon church), has decided against airing The New Normal, calling it "inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time." As Variety points out, Ksl has a history of passing on NBC series, including The Playboy Club, Coupling, and The Book of Daniel, but at least one New Normal star, Ellen Barkin, called them out on what what seems to be a case of prejudice. On Twitter, late last night, she blasted the station: "Shame on u @kslcom not airing @NBCTheNewNormal So L&O Svu (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?"...

Comedian Phyllis Diller died today in her Los Angeles home. EW’s Jessica Shaw profiled “the most celebrated female stand-up in history” in 2005 when the actress was still breaking ground at 87: She had penned a new memoir, Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse, and landed a role on a fall TV pilot, The Book of Daniel. Diller’s wit was as sharp as ever, despite her failing health.
Phyllis Diller isn’t feeling so hot right now. She’s flung herself back in a black stretch limo, forcing deep breaths in and out of her mouth, weakened from a recent bout with pneumonia.

Warehouse 13 and Alphas Open Big for Syfy
Warehouse 13 opened its fourth season on solid grade for Syfy, bringing in 2.1 Million total viewers. Alphas made its sophomore debut count as well, snaring 1.7 Million viewers. Both shows managed to best their previous percentages in the key 18-49 and 25-54 age group demographics. This is not only good news for Syfy channel, it's also good news for Sci-Fi fans. Perhaps these numbers will convince Syfy to put more SciFi in their prime-time slots.

The seemingly endless wait for the Syfy summer schedule is finally over! There is good news and bad, and one thing that is both good and bad. Let’s start with that: the Eureka Season Finale. We love Eureka, so every episode is good news; the fact that it’s a series finale, not so much. Mark your calendars – and have plenty of Kleenex in stock – for July 16 at 9/8c. Right after Comic-Con, which is early this year. We’ll see if that means a panel or not.
The good news: Warehouse 13 and Alphas return on July 23. The hmmm news is that Lost Girl will move to Fridays at 10 on July 20. Hey That’S Haven’S Spot. So Where The Heck Is Haven? Admittedly we had a head’s up that Haven would be pushed to fall when we learned that the DVDs for Season 2 weren’t being released until September but Argh.

The fate of Gcb, one of our favorite new shows, will be decided in the next few weeks, and right now, there's a 50/50 chance it'll survive. If it does get canceled, at least it'll instantly become a member of what we'll call the Arrested Development/Freaks & Geeks/Firefly club. Shows that were canceled before their time, and have gained cult status since they left the airwaves.
All of those programs have rabid enthusiastic followers, and in the case of Firefly and Arrested Development, that fan enthusiasm has directly led to big screen resurrections.
We're hoping Gcb gets a renewal, but while we wait, let's take a look at a few other shows throughout the years that were unfairly snuffed out, and picture ... what might have been.

It has been a year since Sidney Lumet passed away on April 9, 2011. Here is our retrospective on the legendary filmmaker to honor his memory. Originally published April 15, 2011.
Almost a week after the fact, we, like everyone that loves film, are still mourning the passing of the great American master Sidney Lumet, one of the true titans of cinema.
Lumet was never fancy. He never needed to be, as a master of blocking, economic camera movements and framing that empowered the emotion and or exact punctuation of a particular scene. First and foremost, as you’ve likely heard ad nauseum -- but hell, it’s true -- Lumet was a storyteller, and one that preferred his beloved New York to soundstages (though let's not romanticize it too much, he did his fair share of work on studio film sets too as most TV journeyman and early studio filmmakers did).
His directing career stretched well over 50 years,...

(Rns) Many TV network executives, advertisers and producers would sell their souls to get the kind of audience God has. But giving religion a starring role in prime time? Not so much.
Religion, God and spirituality have made cameos across the dial from "The Sopranos" to "The Simpsons" -- though usually as a prop or walk-on role. But shows where religion is a central part of the premise are rare, and the ratings are generally far from heavenly.
Short of touchy-feely shows like "Touched By an Angel" or "Highway to Heaven," why is religion so radioactive in Hollywood?
This month, cable network TLC canceled "All-American Muslim" after only about 700,000 viewers watched the season finale of the reality show featuring Muslims in Dearborn, Mich.
Meanwhile, ABC's saucy new drama "Gcb" -- think "Desperate Housewives" in choir robes -- that's based on Kim Gatlin's novel...

10 years ago, NBC programs ranked among the most watched on television. In 2001/2002, the peacock had launched successful new series such as Law & Order : Criminal Intent, Crossing Jordan and Scrubs, not knowing that in the following 4 years, they would produce only 5 successful new shows while countless failed, prefiguring the crisis they're into since 2007, a crisis they don't seem to be able to get out of.
In 2002/2003, American Dreams was the only new show that worked, all the other were cancelled : sitcoms In-Laws (15 episodes), Ausa (12 episodes, 4 unaired) and Hidden Hills (18 episodes, 5 unaired), and dramas Kingpin (6 episodes) and Minister Sterling (10 episodes). Both Boomtown and Good Morning Miami were renewed for a second season scheduled for 2003/2004 but halfway through it, they were both cancelled, they ended in December 2003.

Super-stardom always looks so inevitable in retrospect: of course Ryan Gosling would make a name for himself in well-received indie movies like Lars and the Real Girl and Blue Valentine, while also finding popular success in movies like The Notebook and Crazy, Stupid, Love.
And with looks like Chris Evans', it was surely only a matter of time until he'd find a vehicle like Captain America that would give him the lead in a movie that's a big fat hit.
But is that true? Once you each a certain level and generate the "right" kind of buzz, is super-stardom inevitable?
As near as I can tell, Hollywood is still basically playing by the "three-flops-and-you're-out" rule: after a leading actor's breakthrough success, he gets about three more roles to prove himself.
If these movies flop, and if their name recognition is still high enough because of that initial break-through, they...

Unknown falls into a very strange category of films, not least because it is decidedly difficult to recommend. By the time the credits roll, I found it to be better-than-average as far as overall entertainment value, and I'm a Liam Neeson fan, but up until somewhere slightly beyond the half-way point, I had a desperate urge to fast-forward, or leave.
It's a vehicle of curious frustration, and I'm inclined to suspect that it is because the story is better suited to an episode of The Twilight Zone (or similar) than feature film. As fans of quickfire story houses (like Twilight Zone) well know, what puts them in a distinct class of storytelling is that they are all endgame. We lead into the clever trick of the story, and then we get a nice "Aha," moment, and that's pretty much the genre.
Unknown is such a "gag," and while not alone...

Warehouse 13 Warehouse 13, Syfy’s most successful series ever, will begin its third season on Monday, July 11, at 9Pm (Et/Pt) answering key questions left hanging from the gripping season two finale. Has Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) left the Warehouse team for good? Have we seen the last of villainous H.G. Wells (Jaime Murray)? And how will the new character Steve Jinks, (played by Aaron Ashmore, Jimmy Olsen on Smallville), a young Atf agent who can detect when someone's lying -- recruited by Mrs. Frederic (Cch Pounder) to be Pete Lattimer's (Eddie McClintock) new partner -- impact the chemistry of the Warehouse?
Once again, Warehouse 13 will showcase an all-star cast of guest stars throughout the season. In the premiere, Ashley Williams (Good Morning Miami) portrays tough-as-nails FBI agent Sally Stukowski, who locks horns with Pete. To kick off Season Three – and Syfy’s new Monday night programming block...

Watching an episode of Glee every week usually results in my having at least one Omfgtisfg! moment. (That stands for Oh My F***ing God This is So F***ing Gay!) Whether it's Kurt coming out to his dad, an episode about bullying, or Blaine serenading Kurt, it's pretty much guaranteed that something will happen on Glee that makes me marvel about how much has changed when it comes to Glbt issues in the U.S.
This week's Omfgtisg moment didn't actually happen in the episode, but rather came during the first commercial break when the Google Chrome "It Gets Better" ad aired. To say it was nothing short of extraordinary is an understatement. We're talking about one of the most influential corporations in the world coming out and endorsing one of the most important gay projects ever . And not in some insignificant way like a five second "CBS Cares" spots.

Best known for trailblazing works of historical fiction like The Book Of Daniel and Ragtime, E.L. Doctorow isn’t often cited for his short-form chops. That’s a shame, because All The Time In The World: New And Selected Stories, which collects six new pieces and six previously printed in Lives Of The Poets and Sweet Land Stories, benefits from the unforced profundity and convincingly drawn characters that have served his novels so well. Those characters are often struggling at the margins, attempting to carve out some semblance of a home for themselves after misplaced confidence or dumb luck ...

NBC announced today that they've renewed The Office, Parks and Recreation and Community for the 2011-2012 season. I'm not a big fan of Parks and Recreation, I'm still on board with The Office even thought Steve Carrell is leaving, but Community is one of my favorite TV shows right now.
Here's the official press release from NBC:
NBC has issued pickups for three returning comedy series in 2011-12 that include "The Office," "Parks and Recreation" and "Community," it was announced today by Bob Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.
"I am so pleased to renew these three outstanding comedies which are all at the top of their game creatively," said Greenblatt. It was previously announced that Amber Tamblyn would be joining the Princeton Plainsboro team on "House" for a "multi-episode arc." We can now whet your whistle with a few pictures from her first three episodes (hopefully the first three of many more).
In "Office Politics" (pictured above), Tamblyn's med student Martha Masters joins the team as they try to diagnose a New Jersey campaign manager (played by "Heroes" alum Jack Coleman).
In "A Pox on Our House" (pictured below, one and two) House challenges Masters to diagnose a patient who is exhibiting symptoms similar to smallpox. Dylan Baker ("Kings," "The Book of Daniel") also guest stars as a doctor from the Center for Disease Control.
In "Small Sacrifices" (pictured far below), a patient refuses the prescribed treatment in favor of an experimental treatment after his daughter's cancer is cured.

You probably don’t know Garret Dillahunt by name, but you should, because you know his work. He may be the most hated guy on television. You see, he’s got a history of playing the bad guy, whether it’s on Deadwood, The 4400, Life, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, or Burn Notice. Needless to say, it was a huge surprise to see the guy who played relentless Terminator Cromartie had signed up for…a sitcom?! Yet Dillahunt shows us a comedic side as the eccentric patriarch of the Chance family (no relation to Christopher) on the almost-absurd Fox comedy Raising Hope, which begins tonight after Glee. He was nice enough to talk to me exclusively and not even try and terminate me.
First things first: what the heck is the guy who tried to kill Sarah Connor doing on a sitcom?
I started actually on sitcoms. I did...

Artie (Saul Rubinek) was right! Hg Wells (Jaime Murray) was up to no good… or so it seems from the first half of the second season finale of SyFy’s Warehouse 13 last week. What are Hg’s true motives? How does Hg’s recent actions play into why MacPherson (Roger Rees) broke her out of the Bronze Sector? Why is she dressed like Lara Croft? (Well, actually that last question was answered in “Buried“, but I thought I’d throw that one in there just for kicks.)
