Sex & Nudity

Violence & Gore

  • Genocide and mass murder is the main theme of the film: atrocities are frequently discussed throughout
  • Militiamen with machetes are seen murdering people. It's disturbing but usually depicted from afar, not too graphic
  • Dead bodies and severed body parts are depicted. Amonst the goriest sights are piles of severed limbs and an image of thousands of massacred corpses in an abandonned church
  • War scenes, shootings, bombs dropped and explosions

Profanity

  • Brief moderate to strong language (ex: "bullshit")

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Social drinking and smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The theme of the film is intense and emotional. The impact is hightened by the fact it is all based on real historical events.
  • Militamen act in a threatening manner against civilians and the main characters of the movie.
  • Disturbing imagery pervades the film, notably images of dead bodies. In one protracted scene, a road is seen covered in corpses and characters have to move them in order to advance with vehicules. In another, a woman slips in a pool of blood and starts crying hysterically before being killed. Severed limbs are picked up and thrown in heaps.
  • Not recommanded for children under 15. However, this is a true story and an important historical lesson about the horrors of the 20th century. Parents/educators can and should watch this film with (older) teens and try to contextualize the events.
