John Savident, who played the booming voiced Fred Elliott in British soap Coronation Street, died Wednesday. He was 86.
His agent confirmed his passing in a statement to press, saying: “We are sad to announce the death of the actor John Savident who died on Wednesday 21 February. He was a much-loved husband and father of two and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”
Savident joined ITV soap in 1994 as a butcher with a disastrous love life. His comic timing and turn of phrase made him one of the long-running program’s most familiar faces before his character was killed off in 2006 after almost 1,000 episodes. His quirk of adding the words, “I say” in between others has been widely parodied in the UK.
The Coronation Street X account shared an image of the actor, and wrote: “Everyone at Coronation Street is deeply saddened to learn of John Savident’s death.

Bonnie Langford is returning to Doctor Who, reprising her role of legendary companion Melanie Bush.
We first met Mel in 1986, going on time-travelling adventures first with the sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, and then his successor Sylvester McCoy in 1987. During six stories spanning 20 episodes, she encountered villains and monsters aplenty, including the plant-based slave race the Vervoids, genocidal humanoids called the Bannermen, and the infamous renegade Time Lady The Rani.

Max Beesley is glad to be getting cast in ''serious'' dramas. The 'Hotel Babylon' star has been shaking up Claire Danes' security team in the latest season of American hit drama 'Homeland', and back in the UK he's appearing in British drama 'Ordinary Lies', but revealed there was a time that he couldn't get cast in serious roles. Speaking exclusively to Bang Showbiz, he said: ''There was a point when I was doing 'Hotel Babylon' when I couldn't get cast in a serious part. It's so weird, but then you do serious parts and they go, 'Ooh, I don't know if they'd...

Claire Danes has a new “Homeland” underling — and she’ll probably want to keep an eye on this one. The Showtime drama just locked recurring “Suits” actor Max Beesley for one episode. He’ll play Mike Brown, an ex-Royal Marine turned private military contractor. Brown is described as smart, but he is not entirely comfortable working under Carrie Mathison (Danes). The world of Doctor Who has changed greatly in the space of just 10 years. The cast and crew have almost completely been replaced since 2005, including a number of new actors to play the errant Time Lord and his companions.
But what has happened to the class of '05? Where are Rose and Mickey now? What is the writer of 'Dalek' up to? And where can you see more work from the director of 'Rose'?
Here it is then, your guide to the main players of Doctor Who series one.
The Cast
After his three-month on-screen stint as the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston's career continued in much the same vein, taking in theatre, interesting television roles and the odd blockbuster.
Post-2005, the Northern actor went Stateside to take on the role of invisible man Claude in the Us series Heroes. From there, he popped up in a very amusing Doctor Who-esque cameo as Dr.

Netflix has just released their lists of what films and TV shows we will see added in February…and what films and TV shows will vanish.
First, the good news: quite a few classic and popular TV shows are making the grade on the streaming service, including the first five seasons of Mash, Hawaii 5-0, and the new season of House of Cards. New additions to the film list include RoboCop, The Brothers Bloom, and Gimme Shelter. While there’s not a lot of quality stuff on offer, there are at least a few new films and TV shows that we can enjoy on the Netflix streaming service.
Now for the bad news: quite a number of favorites are going to vanish from Netflix come February 1. Among these are several James Bond films, Zodiac, Jane Eyre, and Dredd. The TV shows fare even worse, with tons of BBC shows expiring,...

Here's a crazy thing we didn't know was happening -- there's a musical opening in London this spring about the U.K. "X Factor."
"I Can't Sing: The X Factor Musical" is billed as "an affectionate poke at the world's most talked about talent show" and it's being produced by Simon Cowell's company, Syco Entertainment.
But what makes it even better is that Cowell is being played on stage by Nigel Harman, most recently seen in the U.S. as a rapist on "Downton Abbey."
We repeat: The "Downton Abbey" rapist is playing Simon Cowell in a musical about "The X Factor."
We can hardly wrap our minds around it. Sure, Harman is known in England for many other things ("EastEnders," "Hotel Babylon"), but in the U.S., he's really only been seen as Mr. Green, the despicable valet to Lord Gillingham on "Downton."
But wait! There's more!

The comic book creator is to team up with director Mitch Jenkins to work on a series of 'occult, noir flecked' short films
Next to Philip K Dick, Alan Moore may just be Hollywood's favourite ideas man. And yet unlike the iconic science fiction writer, who at least gave his blessing to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner not long prior to his death in 1982, Moore has turned his nose up at every one of the blockbuster projects adapted from his comic books. V For Vendetta, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and From Hell were all given short shrift by the British writer, apparently because no one asked his advice on how to film them.
Even Zack Snyder's faithful take on Watchmen – perhaps Moore's most brilliant work – was dismissed out of hand. But if you've ever wondered quite what a movie made with Moore's full cooperation might look like, now's your chance.

ABC’s Beauty and the Beast has cast Irish actress Ruth Bradley as its titular beauty, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Bradley joins the project — which is described as a re-imagining of the classic fairy tale — as the Belle-esque Grace, an embattled princess. She’ll star alongside the previously cast Darius Campbell (Hotel Babylon), who will play Shiro, Grace’s “beast” of a bodyguard, and Chris Egan (Kings) as her fiancé Gorrick.
A relative newcomer to U.S. television, Bradley’s small-screen credits include RTÉ-Ireland’s Love/Hate, ITV’s Primeval and BBC One’s Innocent. She next can be seen...

Cue "Hail to the Chief" because TV has found its president.
Bill Pullman, who famously took on the role of head of state in the 1996 blockbuster "Independence Day," has signed on to play the Us leader in NBC's White House comedy "1600 Penn," according to The Hollywood Reporter." Pullman joins former "American Dreams" star Brittany Snow (playing his Type A daughter) and "The Book of Mormon's" Josh Gad (playing his spacey son) in the single-camera pilot about a dysfunctional first family.
Pullman previously inspired viewers in his legendary (even if cliché-filled) "Independence Day" presidential address, in which his character, fictional President Thomas J. Whitmore , said, "We will be united in our common interest ... We are fighting for our right to live, to exist and should we win the day ... We will not go quietly into the night; We will not vanish without a fight."

Stephen Carter, the man who re-engineered the UK’s regulatory landscape for media, is to offer a presentation on convergence at next month’s Spaa conference.
The session at the Screen Producers Association of Australia event is highly timely because Australia’s media regulations are undergoing a similar review to that carried out by Carter around seven years ago.
Carter created the UK super-regulator Ofcom after the merger of several individual media regulators. He later became a government minister and is now boss of telco giant Alacatel-Lucent.
According to Spaa, Carter’s presentation will cover media convergence issues around the three Ps of politics, policy and profit.
During his previous business career, Carter also had a stint as an executive with advertising agency Jwt.
The announcement follows news last week that Gareth Neame, managing director UK of NBCUniversal international TV production and head of TV hit series Downton Abbey will...

Outnumbered, the multi-award-winning comedy series from Hat Trick Productions, which captures the turbulent chaos of family life, is back on BBC One with a new six-part series starting on Friday 2 September and followed by a Christmas special.
In the new series, the family is confronted by an array of issues ranging from death, drugs, terrorism and getting old, to food science, Top Gear, the joy of ventriloquism and the perils of Subbuteo.
The casting director avoided stage-school talent, instead undertaking a lengthy audition process which involved lots of game playing, determined to find children who would enjoy the filming process. So the three juvenile leads came out at the top of the fairly exhausting casting process. Andy: "They're all really interesting to watch and they've all got very interesting, funny personalities. Confident, but also excellent actors."

Right now, I'm disturbed by a hubbub outside the window. A whopping great tractor is trying and failing to park in a cul-de-sac just over the road. No great surprise about that in theory – except that I've seen bigger cul-de-sacs in Trumpton. Tractor guy's already getting grief from a couple of creaky old codgers waving their fists aloft like he's just threatened to crush their cottages to rubble with his clunky vehicle.

British comedy actress Janet Brown has died at the age of 87.
The veteran star, known for her impersonations of former U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, passed away in her sleep at a nursing home in Hove, south east England. Her death comes following a short illness, according to her agent Susan Angel.
Brown began her career in the 1930s, but it wasn't until the 1970s that she really found fame, showing off her impersonation skills during appearances on The Mike Yarwood Show.
Her Thatcher spoof was so good, she was cast as the leading politician in the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only in 1981.
She later starred in British TV dramas such as Midsomer Murders, Casualty and Hotel Babylon.
Brown, who was married to late Carry On star Peter Butterworth, is survived by their actor son Tyler Butterworth.

Gareth Edwards is the director of brit-indie-mumblecore-monster-movie-success Monsters. He is also the man taking the reins of the Godzilla reboot. As long as it all goes swimmingly, this should be a perfect match of talent and material, but let’s not jinx it for him.
Actually lets tip toe around it and not say “the G word” aloud, as he’s only supposed to be talking about Monsters today. But don’t worry I still squeeze a few drops of giant lizard juice out of him. That sounded less disgusting in my head.
It was an overcast day and I'd just walked the wrong way around Russell Square, but I’m still in time to get some water and take a seat for my round table style talk with Gareth. Fortunately it turns out to be a triangular style table talk, with just myself Gedwards and a rather nice fellow from Cine-Vue.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has been plagued from the start. Decried as ill-conceived, hackneyed, and a radical (and unneccessary) departure from source material beloved by the very people that should have been the core audience, there were some points of interest. An original score by U2's Bono and the Edge...promising. But most promising was the fact that the production would be directed by Julie Taymor: Oscar-nominated director of Frida and The Tempest, Taymor received both Laurence Olivier and Tony awards for her fantastic (and fantastical) work as a director and costume designer for the stage adaptation of The Lion King.
Today, TV news channel NY1 reports that sources close to Taymor have confirmed she will leave the production. The show was supposed to have its debut performance next Tuesday (delayed from the original scheduled debut in January), but may be delayed again as well, perhaps until as late as June.

1985 is something of a year of guilty pleasures. Take some of the offerings on the big screen. A View To A Kill. Clue. Weird Science. Not really movies that I'd bring up in the middle of a conversation about all-time classics, but in their own gormless way, they're actually quite enjoyable.
Ditto Attack Of The Cybermen, not really a story you'd admit to enjoying out loud. After all it's mindlessly violent, obsessed with pointlessly fannish continuity, and has a plot that might as well be written in hieroglyphics, since when you ponder on it, it makes little to no sense. It may not boast Cybermen wearing bras on their heads or Tim Curry frantically playing Lytton as a last-minute replacement, but nevertheless, I still quite like Attack Of The Cybermen.
It's the story that kicks off season 22, something of a turning point in Who history for a number of reasons.

New York — The long-delayed Broadway musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" has suffered another blow with the departure of a lead actress, one of a number of performers injured in the costly production even before its official opening.
Natalie Mendoza, who recently had returned to the stunt-heavy show after suffering a concussion during its first preview performance last month, pulled out for good following several days of negotiations between lawyers for both sides. Producers Thursday evening broke the news to the cast before the 8 p.m. performance.

"It has been a difficult decision to make, but I regret that I am unable to continue on 'Spider-Man' as I recover from my injury," Mendoza said in a statement.
