Prepare for the most indescribable theme song to a schlocky European b-movie since Yor, the Hunter from the Future! Prepare to witness more Yeti crotch than the eyes can handle! Prepare for the theme to the 1977 Italian-Canadian King Kong knock-off Yeti, Giant of the 20th Century!
One of the most entertaining bad movies of the 1970's, Yeti, Giant of the 20th Century is an Italian production shot in Canada and then badly dubbed into English that was designed to piggyback off the success of the previous year's King Kong remake.
Watching Yeti, Giant of the 20th Century is like watching King Kong after licking too many toads. The monster is an actor with an extremely expressive face attired in a fur suit with a head of puffy hair that would make Tina Turner proud.
Thawed out from several millennia of sleep, the Abominable Snowman bonds with a boy, develops the hots for a girl,...

With From Up On Poppy Hill, out on disc today, Ryan looks at the rich detail in Studio Ghibli's dramas, and its post-Miyazaki future...
Studio Ghibli may be best known for its woodland spirits and castles in the sky, but there's so much more to the Japanese animation house's output than colourful fantasy. Whether directed by founders Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, or newer animators, such as Hiromasa Yonebayashi (Arrietty), Studio Ghibli's movies are equally alive in their more dramatic, quiet moments.
From Up On Poppy Hill, released in Japan in 2011 and out now on home release in the UK, may surprise some viewers with its gentle period romance, but it provides a fresh example of how Studio Ghibli can breathe life into even the most prosaic activities. From Up On Poppy Hill is the second feature from Goro Miyazaki - the son...

You don't need to go all the way to Paris just to see the Eiffel Tower these days. With all of the replicas that have popped up around the world an Eiffel Tower might be practically in your backyard.
The Eiffel Tower
A Few Brief Facts About The Original:
Was built as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair 1,063 ft tall (or 324 meters) The engineer's name was Gustave Eiffel Initially Mr. Eiffel had little enthusiasm for the project but obviously eventually changed his mind
The Replicas:
Paris, Texas / 1:16 scale (USA)
Constructed in 1993, this replica has found itself in a constant height battle with a replica in Paris, Tennessee, which was also completed in 1993. At first, Texas' tower was designed to be five feet taller than Tennessee's, but then the Tennessee tower took the lead. But to finish the battle once and for all Paris, Texas added a cowboy hat to their tower,...

Introducing Hugh Jackman as Logan in the stand-alone The Wolverine, directed by James Mangold. 20th Century Fox has been releasing some fairly impressive bits of early marketing so far for The Wolverine, the spin-off Wolvie solo movie set in Japan based on the Frank Miller & Chris Claremont storyline. We've seen a badass first look and bone claws photo showing Jackman, plus the sleek teaser poster art and on set Q&A, now we've got a "motion poster" to unveil the international teaser poster - which is also quite badass. The artwork shows Logan crouched, clutching samurai sword in one hand, claws in the other, with a glimpse at the Tokyo Tower in the background. Love it. It's impressive artwork and such a dark but stunning tease. This raining motion poster is from the international website for the movie, linking to their Facebook page. Here's the original jpg poster, downloadable in...

Nothing like combing through Japanese forums to figure out what’s going on with ‘The Wolverine.” Director James Mangold is almost invisible while star Hugh Jackman is making quite the celebrity wave in Japan.
But, the film can’t avoid making news when they shoot at Japan’s historic Zojoji Temple, where actors were on hand for some sort of …Yakuza funeral?
A summary roughly translated from Japanese (obviously Jessica Biel wasn’t there since she isn’t in the movie, so grain of salt this):
Summary of Day 1 Zojoji shooting. 7:00 Hugh Jackman, Jessica Biel, Will Yun Lee, Hal Yamanouchi, (probably) Hiroyuki Sanada containing remains of costume in the play some local morning. Verify Written By Logan, Mariko, Harada, Yashida, the Viper in a chair for the performers.
And a few more details that mention a “grand funeral:”

Takashi Yamazaki is set to direct a third film in the Always franchise. The new film, Always: Sanchome no Yuhi ‘64, is set in the year of the Tokyo Summer Olympics and will be shot in full stereoscopic 3D.
Based on Ryohei Saigan’s manga “Sanchome no Yuhi - Yuyake no Uta”, the films present a nostalgic view of a bustling Tokyo neighborhood during post-occupation Japan. The first two installments, released in 2005 and 2007, were set in the late 50s as the Tokyo Tower was being built. The leap forward to 1964 was not part of the original manga, but Saigan signed off on the new film and even added some of his own ideas to the screenplay.
Returning cast members include Hidetaka Yoshioka, Shinichi Tsutsumi, Koyuki, Maki Horikita, Masako Motai, Tomokazu Miura, and Hiroko Yakushimaru.
Filming began on January 12 and will be completed by the end of April. Theatrical release is slated...

It's difficult not to be wowed when you are in Japan, especially if you get an opportunity to witness the Tokyo's biggest work in progress - the Tokyo Sky Tree. A marvel of Japanese technology and engineering, the Tokyo Sky Tree was envisaged by a consortium of six of Japan's biggest broadcasting stations. They wanted a new terrestrial broadcasting tower, but since construction began in 2008, the Sky Tree has come to mean a lot more to the citizens of Tokyo. It is, when fully constructed, going to be the highest radio tower in the world. You stand in front of the iron and steel structure and you feel humbled. It stands in front of you, a 350 meter tall behemoth, with hundreds of men and machines working on it night and day. My guide tells me that when it is completed in December 2011, the Tokyo Sky Tree will be the tallest...

Directed by Yoshihiro Nishimura and Naoyuki Tomomatsu.
Written by Yoshihiro Nishimura.
The horror genre films coming out of Japan are usually breathtakingly imaginative. They can range from delivering genuine chills to just being laughable. But for people seeking the latter, Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl hits comedic heights dead-on. The product is entertaining in a weird kind of way, but was that what director Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) intended?
He tries to look into the sub-cultures that often exist within Japanese high schools. But for some viewers, what he tries to do is treading a very fine line of what is considered satire. What he explores in wrist-cutting and Ganguro culture is very questionable. And the humour and low-budget special effects borrows a page from the Evil Dead movies, complete with the enough cheesy performances to either make one cringe or think they're watching a Troma product.

Meanwhile, Katherine Jackson along with Michael's kids, Prince, Paris and Blanket, appeared at the unveiling of a monument outside the family's first home in Gary, Indiana, where the Jackson legend began. All the movies on this list feature countless thousands (probably millions in most cases) of innocent people shuffling off this mortal coil. Human are more than likely the cause of most of the disasters that appear here. Unfortunately, though, for all of those pesky humans that meet their demise, it’s the famous landmarks that seem to become the money shots of each of these films. They are icons to their respective countries, but these famous landmarks never looked so good than when they were getting blown the hell up.

I have to confess to being a Yoshihiro Nishimura virgin, having missed Tokyo Gore Police, and furthermore haven't seen any other contemporary Japanese exploitation splatter - films like Noburo Iguchi's Machine Girl - of the genre he is associated with. So forgive me if I start to gush about this beautiful, crazy film that hit me round the head like a hammer made out of Lsd, as it was something quite new to me, and I think it represents something quite new and exciting for horror cinema.
A high school soap opera set up has the class heart-throb Mizushima, good looking but familiarly bland and wet - it's the girls who run this film - caught between the attentions of class bully Keiko, a spoilt Gothic Lolita...

Fango recently put in a day on the set of Vampire Girl Vs. Frankenstein Girl, an upcoming co-directorial feature from Japanese filmmakers Yoshihiro Nishimura of Tokyo Gore Police and Stacy’s Naoyuki Tomomatsu. The shoot, taking place in the coastal city of Kisarazu in Chiba prefecture, is one of those nonstop, sunrise-to-sunset, high-energy filmmaking marathons typical of Nishimura, whose over-the-top FX work can also be seen in last year's Machine Girl.
The scene Fango witnesses features Vampire Girl Monami as she squares off against three weapon-wielding, zombielike Frankenstein cuties. With Nishimura handling the FX sequences, it’s a good bet that the blood will fly—and sure enough, just before noon, a large trash bin of stage blood is wheeled on set. By the time the last filmable amount of daylight has drained from the sky, the bin is empty, and there is nothing in sight spared from the crimson dye.
