British movies from the beginning had a very middle-class attitude, constantly warning their audiences against the dangers of gypsies, exploding automobiles and drinking alcohol. The bizarre manner in which this bizarre movie proceeds can be partially explained by this attitude, partially explained by the short length of films in this period, which forced the story to proceed at an unlikely pace, and mostly by the fact that the sort of sexual degradation and rape that accompanied this sort of tragedy could not be shown on the screen. However, the resulting movie is just ridiculous.
