Repentance is not your typical revenge film. Anthony Mackie and Mike Epps play Tommy and Ben, brothers whose lives take very different directions after a car accident nearly kills both of them. Tommy becomes a self-help guru and best-selling author, while Ben is in and out of jail and deeply in debt to some unsavory characters. To help his brother and make some fast cash, Tommy agrees to take on a private client, Angel (played by Forest Whitaker), who is having a hard time getting over the sudden death of his mother.
The film, directed by Philippe Caland, is a loose “remake” of Caland’s own film, The Guru & the Gypsy. Whitaker, who starred in Caland’s The Ripple Effect, describes it as a “re-envisioning” of that early film. “It deals with karma and people’s subconscious.” But he also believes that there is a touch of the supernatural in Repentance.

Victoria’s Transport Accident Commission has just celebrated its 25th birthday. Robin Hicks looks back at the most powerful ads in its history, and wonders what makes effective road safety advertising.
When the Tac was created in 1987, it declared a mission to ‘upset, outrage and appal’ Victorians to reduce the number of road deaths in the state.
For an ad agency, that is quite a brief.
The Tac began advertising in December 1989, appointing Grey Melbourne, an agency that it has worked with ever since. Twenty-three years later, the state boasts the safest roads in Australia.
When the campaign started, the road death toll in Victoria was 776 in a year. Last year, the total was down to 287.
Of course, the Tac’s progress in reducing road casualties is not just about effective advertising. Safer cars, better roads, government legislation, heavier police enforcement and heftier fines have helped. But these factors are...

Werner Herzog dispensed sage advice Sunday during the International Cinematographers Guild's 16th annual Emerging Cinematographer Awards at the Directors Guild of America Theater in Los Angeles. Among his recommendations to the next generation of cinematographers were to seek out knowledge of celluloid film and to be vigilant during the shooting of a scene to avoid excess coverage. "Be bold, develop your own vision, and stick to it. And don't be afraid -- because you are the future," Herzog encouraged the honorees. Eli Roth contributed his own words of wisdom from Las Vegas via a recorded video message. Shorts from the honorees were screened during the ceremony. Among those recognized were camera operator John Barr ("The Carrier"), 1st AC Daron Keet ("Ripple Effect"), camera operator Brian O'Carroll ("Angel"), camera operator Michael Pescasio ("Don't Let Your Love Annihilate"), camera operator James...

Leo Burnett Sydney’s Watermark campaign for Bundaberg Rum is flying the flag for Australia in the Creative Effectiveness category at Cannes.
It is the only Australian entry in the category, with Break Up for Nab and Grey Melbourne’s Ripple Effect for the Transport Accident Commission missing out.
Only shortlisted entries from the previous year are eligible for the award, which aims to prove the impact of a creative idea on an advertiser’s business.
Entries are weighted, with strategy and idea both counting for 25%, and results 50%.
Euro Rscg creative director Steve Coll, who won a creative effectiveness award last year when he was at Amv Bbdo, tipped Clems Melbourne’s Break Up campaign for Nab and Grey Melbourne’s Ripple Effect for the Tac in an opinion piece he wrote for Mumbrella last week.

As the Australian contingent heads for Europe for next year’s Cannes festival, Australia is in with a shot at the prized Grand Prix for Effectiveness, argues last year’s winner Steve Coll.
The argument in favour of creative awards is being made more vigorously than ever. Surprisingly, it’s not creative agencies making the case. It’s our clients.
Some of the world’s best marketers are embracing creative awards like never before. And nowhere is this more apparent than at Cannes, recently rebranded as the Festival of Creativity.
For several years, Cannes has been consistently demonstrating the correlation between work that works and work that wins. Matt Beispiel, Senior Director of Global Brand Development for McDonald’s, points to a measurable difference. “We’ve seen an Roi 54% higher with creative that wins at Cannes Lions than creative that doesn’t.”
Andy Fennell, Cmo of Diageo, puts it succinctly.

Now that the networks have announced their fall (and midseason) schedules for next season, we can gaze upon the annual pilot graveyard and despair. The pilot process is a fraught one, and this year, several high-profile projects didn't make the cut. It's not all bad news, though: That frees up some of our favorite performers and writers for other gigs — at least, we hope so. Herewith, a list of the shows that are floating off to the TV scrap heap in the sky.County, NBC Jason Ritter, Michael Imperioli, Michael B. Jordan, and Norbert Leo starred in the Jason Katims ER-like hospital drama. Big loss? Yes and no: There's not really a big need for a hospital drama, and while we love the cast and creative team, wouldn't you rather see Katims (Fnl, Parenthood) keep his focus on less-predictable formats? Ripple effect: Ritter can stay on Parenthood next season!

Hey, guys, did you hear Forest Whitaker and Anthony Mackie have teamed up alongside Sanaa Lathan to star in what is being called a voodoo-themed psychological thriller titled Vipaka, which Whitaker will be also running from a production standpoint.
Yep, and the voodoo project will be directed by French/Lebanese helmer Phillipe Caland, who previously collaborated with Whitaker on The Ripple Effect.
The plotline, penned by Shintaro Shimosawa, follows two foes that eventually go head-to-head in a match that will ‘test each man’s belief in what they’re certain is the truth.’
I have no information about production or release dates yet.
Academy Award winner for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, Whitaker will soon be seen in the indies Catch .44 with Bruce Willis, Freelancers with Robert De Niro, Mississippi Wild with Robert Duvall and A Single Shot with Juno Temple.

For what initially sounded like a daft horror picture, voodoo-themed drama Vipka is beginning to put together quite an exciting little cast. Directed by Ripple Effect’s Philippe Caland, the official plot synopsis describes a story that, “follows two adversaries who go head-to-head in a game that will test each man’s belief in what they’re certain is the truth.” Nice and specific then. However, it was clearly enough to convince Forest Whitaker, who was recently revealed to have joined the project as both star and...

Anthony Mackie and Sanaa Lathan have joiend the cast of Vipāka. Variety reports that the thriller is being directed by Philippe Caland and also stars Forest Whitaker. Filming began yesterday in New Orleans. Mackie and Whitaker play "enemies whose conflict occurs against the voodoo backdrop of the city." At this time we do not know how the psychological aspect will play a part in the plot, but the title refers to "a Buddhist concept wherein vipāka is the direct result of a karmic act."
Caland wrote the screenplay to Boxing Helena, and is the director of the thematically-linked Hollywood Buddha, The Guru and the Gypsy and Ripple Effect. I am a huge fan of Mackie, so I am interested in seeing anything he stars in. What are your thoughts on this news?...

Let us be clear. Forest Whitaker is a frightening man. His intensity and ability to pull off some of the most insanely sweaty roles in the history of cinema is staggering! And now? He's about to get a whole lot scarier.
According to Variety Forest Whitaker (pictured menacingly on the right) will bring to life voodoo-themed Vipaka, producing and starring in the psychological thriller alongside Anthony Mackie.
Sanaa Lathan (Something New) also co-stars in the elevated genre film (there's that weird new term again floating around Hollywood, meaning it will focus more on scares than violence), which follows two adversaries who go head-to-head in a game that will test each man's belief in what they're certain is the truth.
Whitaker and Nina Yang are producing through his Significant Prods. banner, while French/Lebanese helmer Philippe Caland (Boxing Helena) is directing, having previously worked with Whitaker on the 2007 indie drama Ripple Effect.

Smallville, as we know is currently in the midst of its 10th and final season (Read our latest review here). The series is not being shy either on bringing back former DC characters that have appeared on the series before. It even seems that one of the returning characters will be bringing along a new bride. EW’s Ausiello Files reports that when Alan Ritchson returns as Aquaman, he will be married to the DC Comics queen of the sea, Mera. Elena Satine has been cast in the role of the deep sea bride. I got to say she is perfectly cast as her physical characteristics are the exact description of Mera from the comics (red hair and green eyes). The newlywed couple will appear on the show’s ninth episode.
In the comics, Mera is the former queen of Dimension Aqua, and current Queen of Atlantis and wife of...
