Topic Studios is developing a scripted TV series based on Benito Cereno, the 1855 Herman Melville novella about the fictionalized revolt of a Spanish slave ship. The series, which will be adapted to take place in deep space, is created by The Knick scribe/co-executive producer Steven Katz, who will write and executive produced project.
Topic Studios will also executive produce alongside Manage-ment’s Dan Halsted and Corinne Hayoun.
Inspired by the novella — considered one of Melville’s finest works as a commentary on slavery, the nature of man and good versus evil — the series will be a science fiction thriller centered on an accidental encounter between a human commercial ship and an alien slave freighter, where the human captain navigates a world of inter-species slavery in a distant future with frightening parallels to our past.

On Monday, North Carolina woman Jamie Basinger pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after her 3-year-old son, Landyn Melton, froze to death in March on an outside porch while she slept inside.
The child was found dead on March 15 after investigators say he went outside in the middle of the night and could not get back into the house. Basinger, who was originally charged with both involuntary manslaughter and child abuse, pleaded guilty to the former charge while prosecutors dropped the latter.
She was released from incarceration earlier this week after being held since her arrest earlier this year, her attorney told People.

The gang is back in “Magic Mike Xxl,” this time in a road trip film. Ok, most of the gang is back. Matthew McConaughey’s Dallas and Alex Pettyfer’s The Kid characters are awol, but returning to the fold are Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias. Steven Soderbergh has vacated the director’s chair too, but don’t worry, he’s acted as director of photography, camera man and editor (we heard this one basically locked picture already). Instead, Soderbergh’s right-hand man and longtime producer/first A.D. Greg Jacobs is at the helm (he directed “Criminal” and “Wind Chill”). From all accounts, while still written by Reid Carolin and Tatum, “Magic Mike Xxl” sounds like much more of a good time buddies comedy. This time the strippers take a road trip from Tampa to Myrtle Beach for a stripping convention.

Warner Bros. has officially announced the start of production on Magic Mike Xxl, the sequel to Steven Soderbergh's 2012 break-out hit Magic Mike, which will again star Channing Tatum in the title role and co-writing the screenplay with Reid Carolin. Soderbergh will serve as cinematographer this time around, handing off directorial duties to Gregory Jacobs (Wind Chill) and along with Tatum and returning stars Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias, new roles will be played by Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover, Amber Heard, Andie MacDowell, Jada Pinkett Smith and even Michael Strahan. Here's the official synopsis: Picking up the story three years after Mike (Channing Tatum) bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, Magic Mike Xxl finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house...

Steven Soderbergh isn't directing Magic Mike Xxl (aka Magic Mike 2), but he is serving as cinematographer and on this Labor Day weekend he's just tweeted the first picture from the set. It's only a clapperboard, but it is an interesting career move for Soderbergh who has served as cinematographer (as well as editor) on most of his films under the pseudonym Peter Andrews, but this is the first time he's done it for a film he isn't directing. At the helm for the sequel is Soderbergh's longtime second unit director, Gregory Jacobs (Wind Chill) with a story described as an "on-the-road adventure", expected to find Mike (Channing Tatum) and his stipper co-horts driving a U-Haul to a stripper convention. For more on that click here. The tweet from Soderbergh is below, Magic Mike Xxl is currently slated for a July 3, 2015 release. https://twitter.com/Bitchuation/statuses/506169958687326208...

Amazon Studios have always done things a little differently. Firstly, their door is always open to creators wishing to submit material. Secondly, when they produce that material, it’s for the audience to decide if it is of sufficient quality to warrant further investment. They make a pilot available, people watch it, and its fate is determined by user comments and ratings. Among the latest of these offerings is Red Oaks – a comedy written by Joe Gangemi (Wind Chill) and Gregory Jacobs (Criminal), directed by David Gordon Green (Prince Avalanche) and executive produced by Steven Soderbergh. To say it is worth checking out is an understatement.
Starring Craig Roberts (22 Jump Street), Paul Reiser (Mad About You), Richard Kind (Obvious Child) and Jennifer Grey (The Bling Ring), the show is set in the 1980s, and sees a college student take a summer job as an assistant tennis pro at a country club.

David Gordon Green is set to direct the pilot episode of "Red Oaks" for Amazon with Steven Soderbergh producing. Speaking with GQ, Channing Tatum let loose some details when it comes to Magic Mike Xxl (aka Magic Mike 2), which he co-wrote with Reid Carolin and will return as the title star. First thing to note for those that haven't been paying close attention, Steven Soderbergh will not be back to direct, instead Soderbergh's longtime second unit director, Gregory Jacobs, will be taking over at the helm for the now "retired" (from theatrical filmmaking at least) director. Tatum, however, tried what he could to get him to change his mind. "I lobbied probably harder than anybody else," Tatum told GQ about his efforts to get Soderbergh back as director. "We had many, many nights of heated debate. I was, 'I don't f--ing get it! Whyc' And he's like, 'I don't need it.'" Soderbergh, it turns out, will serve as editor and cinematographer, which might be the best thing...

While we’ve known for a while that Channing Tatum is hard at work on the Magic Mike sequel – the man himself recently tweeted photographic evidence – but most other details were still hidden. Now The Playlist has it that Greg Jacobs will be the man to direct the new film, and that it will be called Magic Mike Xxl.The word arrives from “sources”, so we can’t treat it as official yet, but Jacobs certainly isn’t a stranger to the world of Magic Mike, nor the first film’s director, Steven Soderbergh. He’s served as first assistant director for Soderbergh since King Of The Hill and has been a producer on his films for several years. So while there had been chatter about Tatum or writing/producing partner Reid Carolin taking the reins, Jacobs would seem to be a smart choice. Jacobs has also called the shots...

Instead, the job has been given to Greg Jacobs, a long-time assistant to Soderbergh who directed the 2007 thriller "Wind Chill," starring Emily Blunt. The sequel also got a new title. It's now being called "Magic Mike Xxl" and will bring back most of the original cast.

Joseph Gangemi ( Fear Itself , Wind Chill ) provided the screenplay. Shooting is expected to begin this June with Oren Peli ( Paranormal Activity ) among the project's producers. Kate Beckinsale is in negotiations to star in "The Machinist" director Brad Anderson's new psychological thriller "Eliza Graves" at Nu Image/Millennium.

"The Machinist" and "Session 9" director Brad Anderson looks to have replaced "Paranormal Activity" helmer Oren Peli as director of the long-gestating horror thriller "Eliza Graves".
Based on Edgar Allan Poe's "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether", the story follows a medical student who goes to work at a mental asylum, unaware that the inmates are now literally running it.
Joseph Gangemi ("Wind Chill") adapted the script while Millennium Films has just acquired the rights to the project.
Peli is still onboard as producer alongside Bruce Davey, Mark Amin, Cami Winikoff and Mel Gibson. Shooting aims to begin in the Spring with casting offers going out next week.

Here is a lesson in Internet translation – don’t run stories through Google Translate in German to French to English, otherwise, you just might end up staring at a line that reads “We want it necessarily But Steven Soderbergh is retiring so we are currently looking for a director, it was already the ideas that…Gregory Jacobs (Anm.d .’s note: regular assistant director Steven Soderbergh, director of “Wind Chill”) takes on the director or Reid Carolin and I take over the government, but we are still not safe there” and wondering just what the hell “the government” of Magic Mike 2 is. Amusing adventures in failed bilinguality (trilingulaity? trylinguality?) aside, a German site called Filmstarts (via French site Allocine, via The Playlist) reports that Channing Tatum could possibly direct the sequel to Magic Mike. Via Google Translate, Tatum is quoted as saying something along the lines of “We really want, but...

When all was said and done, despite all the explosions, capes and major comedies, the best studio movie of the summer was easily Steven Soderbergh‘s Magic Mike. It was also perhaps the most profitable, bringing in over $150 million on just a $7 million budget, so when news of a sequel started flying around, no one was surprised. But with Steven Soderbergh taking an extensive break from filmmaking, what does that mean for the future of the film?
The German site Film Starts sat down with both star Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin, who produced the film with the actor, and we’ve got a hint at where things might go. Remember this is translated by yours truly, so if any German-speaking readers want to chime in I’d be happy to update the story. I am a traditionalist. A sentimental sort, even. I love my cold weather, and I love my winter horror. The snowier, the better. So while my neck of the woods is finally coming out of the grip of an unseasonably tepid start to the season, awash in brown grass, dismal mud holes, and dead trees, I must take refuge in the cinematic snowstorms of yesteryear to get my winter fix. Who’s comin’ with me? Dress warm, bring an extra blanket & maybe a thermos full of hot cocoa, and don’t forget a dry change of socks… here are my top six (well, sorta) destination spots for sub-zero nights of snow-bound terror…

Ok, to be fair, this film reeks of cheap incompetency from start to finish. It’s an underwhelming stalkfest with uneven music, obnoxious puffy characters with blow-dried hair who get drunk and shriek at each other contemptibly,...

*a screener of this film was provided by director Thomas Newman.
Director/writer: Thomas Newman.
Thomas Newman went into production on the zombie comedy Bong of the Dead in 2008. He talked about this film with 28Dla here (Thomas Newman Interview on 28Dla), in 2009. This film was shown at Cannes 2011 and the film is a stoner comedy with some excellent make-up effects from Mike Fields (Wind Chill). The film has good acting, a straight forward script and a suitable bloody ending. However, one element rears its nasty head again and again; the film is dubbed, or there are some serious audio/visual synchronizing problems with the screener. The sound element breaks the realm of reality again and again, like a bubble of rising excitation.
Stoners Tommy (Jy Harris) and Edwin (Mark Wynn) come up with a scheme to grow magical marijuana plants. The thing is, they have to travel to the "Danger Zone,...

Best known for the surprise breakout indie, Paranormal Activity, Oren Peli made his way to Hollywood by directing and producing the demon-themed horror flick himself, shooting the low-budget feature in his own home. Whether or not you’re a fan of Paranormal, you got to respect Peli’s moxie as well as the success of a film whose sequel has already made more than $120 million worldwide.
While Peli’ second feature, the alien thriller Area 51, is currently in post, talk is already building about his next project, Eliza Graves. Variety reports the self-made horror auteur has signed to direct Sobini Films and Icon Prods. dark drama, which is based on a ghastly tale by Edgar Allan Poe. Scripted by Joe Gangemi (Wind Chill), Eliza Graves centers on an eager med school student, who goes to work at an asylum, where unbeknownst to him the inmates have taken over.

She’s young, lovely and very talented, and she’s best known from titles like The Devil Wears Prada, Wind Chill, Dan In Real Life, Charlie Wilson’s War and The Wolf Man.
But now, Emily Blunt reportedly circling a new comedy project titled Engagement Games.
As you see, another movie that already sounds interesting…but only as a bad joke.
Here’s the description: “a comedy about three sisters who get engaged at once and will stop at nothing to get their mother’s wedding ring.
The father then apparently arranges some form of “Family Olympics” in order to determine who will get the ring.” Yeah, well.
Penned by Rachel Specter (“Just Go With It”) and Audrey Wauchope (“Breaking Upwards”), Engagement Games has no director attached yet, but we definitely expect to hear someone experienced in the romantic-comedy genre to come on board soon.

It has been a cold, cold winter.
Snow has been piled high here in Baltimore since late January and it’s been raining down indiscriminately from the heavens since mid December. Snow shovels have become my ally and stolen parking spaces the bane of my existence, but the promise of spring looks set to melt that all away.
Unless, of course the chill returns and with it more seasonal storms. Thanks to the recent blizzards, we are entering the merry month of March and all of us are still looking over our shoulders, waiting for Jack Frost to give us an icy wedgie.
And when you are there, lodged in your home, with no way to get out, it’s understandable that a bit of stir craziness might set in. What better way to counteract that then with some good old fashioned cinematic madness?

We're not going to discuss network television today, because it's nothing but a bunch of reruns and football, anyway. It's gonna be all cable, all the time up in this bitch. If you don't have cable, then I guess you'll just have to translate a Bible from Greek to Latin or something, like the rest of the monks in the Dark Ages. Nerd. Oh, unless you're a peasant, in which case have fun tanning hides or whatever and dying of plague.

The beast is back, and he’s staring Fangoria right in the eye. It’s May 2008, and the end of a long day at England’s Pinewood Studios, where your correspondent has been given a tantalizing behind-the-scenes tour of Universal’s latest attempt to mine its classic horror back catalog, following the successful revamp of The Mummy. After visiting various sets and interviewing some of the cast and crew of The Wolfman, we have decamped to a windowless room to chat with makeup legend Rick Baker about the task of turning star Benicio Del Toro into the eponymous monster.
Midway through our chat, the lights go out, plunging the room into total darkness. “Stay calm,” instructs the film’s unit publicist, “it’s just a problem with the fuse.” But something is afoot. Suddenly, there’s movement at a door, and a large shape enters the room. As our eyes become accustomed to the gloom,...

"Fear Itself" should be pretty fresh in your minds considering it's hitting DVD soon with some very bitchin' artwork. The short-lived show was like the unofficial third season of "Masters of Horror". For various reasons it was pulled before it could run its final five episodes. FEARnet is out to fix all that.
Starting on September 2nd the final five will begin being aired. Below you'll find a synopsis of each episode and when you can tune in to see them.
"Something With Bite," directed by Ernest Dickerson (NBC’s "Heroes"), is a reinvention of the classic werewolf story from writer Max Landis ("Masters of Horror"), the son of John Landis ("An American Werewolf in London"). When a veterinarian (Wendell Pierce, “The Wire”) is bitten by a large, strange animal brought into his clinic, he begins to see the world and his stale life differently. Paula Jai Parker (“Side Order of Life,...

Emily Blunt will be honored as British Artist of the Year at the 2009 BAFTA/La Brittania Awards on Nov. 5 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel. Blunt's upcoming films include "The Young Victoria" and "The Wolfman."
"In just a few short years, Emily Blunt has gone from breakout success in 'My Summer of Love' to blockbuster hits like 'The Devil Wears Prada' and the upcoming 'The Young Victoria' and 'The Wolfman'," BAFTA/La chairman Peter Morris said. "Emily continuously demonstrates an impressive range in her performances and with each movie solidifies her status as one of the best actresses of her generation."
Blunt began her career at the 2002 Chichester Festival, where she played Juliet in a production of "Romeo and Juliet" and made her West End debut opposite Judi Dench in "The Royal Family." Her TV credits include "Gideon's Daughter," for which she won a Golden Globe as...

For quite some time, the supernatural thriller Passengers -- starring Anne Hathaway as a grief counselor working with survivors of a plane crash (among them, Patrick Wilson) who begin to vanish -- had been quietly set on opening this Friday, September 5th.
However, as the date neared without any sign of a poster, a trailer, anything, I began rooting around the IMDb message boards and was about to post a Spanish-language trailer, complete with accompanying amateur translation, when along came a legit trailer (by way of Reelz Channel), a real poster (courtesy of Imp Awards), and a new date of October... well, just October for now.
Given his knack for ensemble dramas such as Nine Lives and Things You Can Tell Just By Looking at Her, director Rodrigo Garcia seems to be a curious pick for the material, as the focus is less on what's happened to the group as...

- Now that Cate Blanchett is too old to play the part, in comes Golden Globe winner and hot piece of Brit property thesp Emily Blunt to play a feisty role of the Queen. For those keeping score: this is not the mother of the Helen Mirren character/true life person we saw in the Stephen Frears biopic. This is a project that was recently brought together by Graham King's Initial Entertainment Group and Martin Scorsese with Canadian fillmaker Jean-Marc Vallee on board to direct and Julian Fellowes as scribe for the pic. The historical pic is chronicling the turbulent early years of Queen Victoria's rule and her romance with Prince Albert. As mentioned above, Blunt is on a hot streak, with The Young Victoria only to see the light of day not until 08/09, the actress will be seen in Wind Chill, The Great Buck Howard, The Jane Austen Book Club
