Where have these Mooks been all my life?
DeadlightsGirl4 January 2006
What could be bad? Cute boys doing silly things. I caught it at a recent NY film festival (I later found out it won the award for Best Short, as well it should), and it was just SO much fun. Such a refreshing change from all the gratuitous toilet or shock humour we are inundated with these days. Silly enough, clever enough, and could be enjoyed by anyone, no matter their age. I cannot recommend these guys enough. It is absolutely amazing, I have not seen such comedic synchronicity in a team since the Marx Brothers. As far as I can tell, they do all their own stunts, too. See them if you can (they have a fabulous website too), they are just brilliant. Yayyy, Mooks!

Fun for the Family

The best part about the Mooks is sharing it with young and old. I can watch with my parents, my grandparents, and my young nieces and nephews and we enjoy it together.

The Mooks have been winning film festivals left and right, and were screened at Cannes in 2006. That is proof positive that the Mooks are getting comedy right.

As you can see, the reviews from people who've actually watched these films is favorable, although that one review sounds like a very jealous person who has not achieved the success, nor has the comic genius of the Mook Brothers.

Splendid Direction and Production Values

There is much to laugh at in this award winning short. I liked it, and I have no sense of humor to speak of. I may have enjoyed it more had there been horses, I don't know. I can say that this is not that snotty sophisticated humor that frankly leaves me feeling inferior, but is a welcome return to silliness, yet leaves out the fart jokes. This flick can be enjoyed by all ages except perhaps angst-ridden 13 year olds, again, I don't know, my kids liked it, but they're easily amused. The Actors portraying the hapless Mooks are not hapless, they're full of hap in fact. This part of the review is important - The arch-types are recognizable yet are not copy-cats, not rip-offs, which is greatly appreciated. Again, I would have liked to see some horses, perhaps a pony, but, given the success that this crew is enjoying, I think some comedy hijinks involving horses, or maybe cattle, must be in the offing.....

First of all, let me start by saying that where I come from mook is not a name someone would give themselves voluntarily. That being said, comedy of this ilk does attempt to harken back to a different time but its influences are as blatant as the sun in August. Even the most uninitiated in the "old school" of comedy can easily recognize the derivative nature of this short. The Marx Brothers style of characterization, the exaggerated situations of the classic screwball comedies and even the one straight man/two clueless characters dynamic which seems lifted directly from The Three Stooges. There is a reason that this style of comedy did not transition into the modern age, it simply wasn't that funny. Please don't get me wrong, The Marx Brothers et al. were all talented performers. But The Marx Brothers these guys ain't. They display neither the social commentary of early Marx Brothers nor the timing of the Stooges, performers who actually do display "comedic synchronicity". However, the technical aspects of this particular short were very well carried out, particularly in the editing and sound recording department. I think the overall professional look that it maintains is responsible for its award winning status, surely not its content.
