We love women around here. Okay, not in that way, but we do love them and can certainly appreciate their many charms. Unfortunately, we spend so much time on AfterElton.com talking about the menfolk that it might lead you to think otherwise.
To remedy that, the AfterElton.com staff put their heads together and compiled a list of Ten Women We Love in 2010. Of course, this is far from a complete roster. There are lots of ladies missing: our mothers, Judge Judy, Rachel Maddow and Kathy Griffin to name just a few. What we were looking for with this list however were women we admire with strong breakout stories this year. Maybe they are a standout on a new hit TV show, or perhaps they've demonstrated unusual bravery and grace in fighting Glbt discrimination, or possibly they've been around for a long time, but have had a recent career...

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject,...

The Skeptic? Is this a film about a DVD reviewer? Well no, it.s a haunted house film about an unbeliever who moves into his aunt.s house and encounters spirits of his past. or does he? Bryan Becket.s (Tim Daly) aunt has just been found dead in her Victorian mansion. He.s seemingly unfazed by her death and is more looking forward to taking possession of the house since it.s the last of the family money. He even shows up late at her funeral, but is covered by Sully (Tom Arnold), his best friend and partner in their law firm. Bryan is just not emotionless about his aunt.s death, but also his troubled marriage to Robin (Andrea Roth). Since he...

I always feel a little gypped when a self-professed horror movie ends up taking the "it was all in his head" road. If there wasn't really anything supernatural or murderous behind the whole thing, does that really make it a horror flick? Isn't that one of the main things that makes a movie a horror rather than a thriller?
For the sake of argument -- and because it's never actually cleared up whether it really was all in his head -- we'll call The Skeptic a horror movie. It's a spooky ghost(?) story, centering on Bryan (Tim Daly, of "Wings" fame), who is -- you guessed it -- a skeptic. He's also an attorney, so it makes sense that he's suspicious by nature. Bryan is virtually a stone, a Tin Man, but without the drive to secure a heart for himself. His wife accuses him of being too unemotional, which...

May 06, 2009 They don't make old-fashioned ghost stories as often as they used to, particularly now that the horror market is flooded with Saw rip-offs and torture porn. Consequently, I'm usually a little forgiving of films that remind me of the great horror classics that influenced the way I look at the genre like Carnival of Souls or The Haunting. To be blunt, I'm forgiving of ghost stories. And yet, I still can't quite get behind Tennyson Bardwell's The Skeptic, a film with good ideas and performances but weak, predictable, two-dimensional, frustrating dialogue. It's a feature ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com...

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: The Skeptic (currently available via video-on-demand and opening in limited theatrical engagements in New York today and Albany and Los Angeles later in May from IFC) is about a man who inherits an old house from his aged aunt after she dies. He decides to move into the creepy old place and…
What, already? Hold on, I’ve only just started.
The reason Bryan Becket (Tim Daly) chooses to relocate into the manse is that things are strained at home with his wife Robin (Andrea Roth). That’s because Bryan, a lawyer by trade, is what a character in the beat-you-over-the-head script by director Tennyson Bardwell refers to as “one die-hard rationalist.” He has no room in his personality for sentiment (“You bet I’m unemotional!” he says at another choice moment), compares religious faith to belief in the Loch Ness...

What do you believe? IFC Films has finally debuted a trailer for The Skeptic, another horror thriller about a haunted house of sorts, but I'm featuring this one today because it feels a bit different. This is somewhat of an older film, as it was actually shot in late 2005/early 2006 and is just coming out this year. It stars Tom Arnold, Zoe Saldana, Andrea Roth, and most importantly, Tim Daly, who seems to make all the difference. Maybe I'm just being to optimistic, but it looks like Daly is one of the only really great parts of this. Realistically, it's probably a really bad film anyway, but at least it has a good trailer. Check it out below. Watch the trailer for Tennyson Bardwell's The Skeptic: [flv:http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/skeptic_trailer_854x480.flv http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/skeptic_trailer_854x480.jpg 598 336] After the mysterious death of his Aunt, a skeptic lawyer dismisses reports that her house is haunted and moves in. Seems like 2009 is the year when our marketable Latina actresses are taking the plunge into the darker side of the industry's genre landscape. First we mentioned here [http://tinyurl.com/cs4set] that Salma Hayek is riding a leading role in Paul Weitz' Cirque Du Freak as the bearded lady of sideshow fame, now another venerable talent, Zoe Saldana (Vantage Point, The Terminal, Premium, Guess Who), is set to hone her cognitive powers in the haunted-house thriller, The Skeptic, which was written/helmed by Tennyson Bardwell (Dorian Blues) and hits theater in a limited run on May 1st at the IFC Center in New York and elsewhere. The film also stars Tim Daly, Tom Arnold, Andrea Roth, Edward Herrmann, Robert Prosky and Bruce Altman. The project marks Bardwell's second feature outing.

Armored
A group of armored car guards plan to swipe several million dollars that have been left in their care. The presence of Laurence Fishburne and Matt Dillon offers some hope, but the basic premise recalls everything from Reservoir Dogs to the Oceans' series. When the youngest member of the gang makes Matt Dillon promise that no one will get hurt I cringed a little. This one hits theaters on September 18.
The Skeptic
I'm torn about how I feel about this one. In the plus column this haunted house flick seems to have some real creep out moments and reminds me a bit of The Changeling. On the other hand I've never seen Tim Daly carry a feature before and the rest of the cast, which includes Tom Arnold, makes me feel like this is a TV movie. For those less skeptical (d'oh!) it hits theaters on May 1.
