If You Could Say It In Words won Best Feature and Best of Festival awards at the 2008 Derby City Film Festival in Louisville KY. The DCFF screening marked the film's World Premiere.
The DVD version is a director's cut that differs significantly from the edit that played festivals. It has over 15 minutes of additional footage as well as a change in the tone of the movie. Writer-director Nicholas Gray said: "It was gussied up a little for the festival circuit. The original idea was very spare, and I wanted to fix that before it went out into the world on DVD forever." Prior to the DVD release, the director's cut had only been shown once at an autism awareness event for the Ministry of Health in Holland.
The new edit for the DVD release happened while Gray recovered from shoulder surgery. For a few months, Gray could only move one arm and had planned to spend it catching up on movies he missed while on the festival circuit. But after watching the Joe Swanberg movie Nights and Weekends (2008), he got inspired to use the time to re-cut the movie on his home computer one-handed.
