No Life Lesson Here

Warning: Spoilers
I started watching the series again after, probably, 20+ years of not seeing it. I remember the morality shoved down our throats and the after-school special type episodes of when I...I was probably 9/10 years old when this show first came out. That's not to say I didn't like the show, I did but watching it again two decades later and I wonder in this episode, where's the morality they were shoving down our throats and what's up with the flimsy plot?

You have the beginning of the episode outlining a who's-the-culprit type scenario. Their conclusion: has to be a student. I mean, they're getting into the school without breaking in, like they have a key to the place; they also seem to know where all the goodies are because only a student would know that. No, it can't be a staff member or a teacher or the janitor (why do these big schools only ever have just one janitor?), or whoever else. Has to be a student. They must have stolen a key. Yep. Makes sense...in la la land it makes sense. They didn't even consider a faculty/staff member. It's a no-brainer it was a staff member.

Oh but the staff member that it was (spoiler): the janitor, was mentally disabled. And you have the student they're looking at for the robberies as the janitor's bully. Up to the end of the show, he still bullies him and no other character ever says a thing about it. Apparently that character's brother went to high school with him and his brother bullied him, too; runs in the family, I guess. Poorly written episode.

Don't Pet the Teacher

Warning: Spoilers
There are thefts at South Central High School. Susan Chadwick (Leah Ayres) is a teacher who is being harrassed. Someone is leaving her flowers.

Hanson goes undercover to investigate. The main suspect is Jeffrey Stone (Geoffrey Blake) a student with an attitude problem and always in trouble with Principal Weintraub.

He is always selling stuff such as Van Halen concert tickets. It leads people to think that he the one stealing from the school.

Jeffrey is a bored rich kid. He gets no attention from his father, his brother was a famed basketball player at the same school.

Jeffrey also likes to harass Albert the school janitor who was at the school at the same time as his brother.

The direction of the episode leaves no doubt that Albert has set Jeffrey up. He seems to be slow, infatuated with Miss Chadwick. There are those lingering looks he gives her.

It robs the episode of its mystery. There also seems to be no criticism towards Jeffrey for the bullying of an intellectually challenged person.
