In a disciplinary hearing, when Dick is defending himself for being an obnoxious person, he asserts that people should have a right to be obnoxious, stating, "Why must everyone like me? Why can't we all just . . . not get along!" This is a parody of the famous words of Rodney King, the central figure in a Los Angeles police beating trial. The trial result, the officers being acquitted, sparked the Los Angeles riots of 1992. King's often-paraphrased words were, "Can't we all get along?"
