Warning: Spoilers
Masters tell the men they are headed for Rifle River. The level has dropped and the patrol is heading out to find why, especially as the river supplies the drinking water for the post. The men find a bottleneck made from fallen trees, so they need to blow the temporary dam. Until then, Rusty can go fishing.

Rusty is almost attacked by a water moccasin, but Rinty kills it. Rinty has also found an old canteen with the initials E.M. on it. Probably belong to Ed McCleod. He had been in B Company, but got into a fight with a civilian. He thought he killed the civilian, so he deserted; he has been missing for a year.

Masters, Rusty, and Rinty get into a canoe to get to the trading post before the dam is blown. There almost there when the canoe hits a rock and capsizes. Rusty and Rinty make it to shore; but Rip's foot gets caught in some rocks. Rip tells Rusty to return and find Boone to stop him from blowing the dam. They have two hours to save Rip.

On their way back, they run into Ed McCleod. Rinty doesn't completely trust McCleod. Ed McCleod believes the soldiers are looking for him because he killed a civilian. Rusty tells Ed about their mission; he also tells McCleod that he didn't kill anyone. Ed can go save Rip while Rusty goes after Boone. Ed ties Rinty up and takes off with Rusty as his prisoner. Ed McCleod has gone a little crazy after a year alone, he doesn't believe Rusty about the civilian living.

Boone is ready to blow the dam. If he does it, then Rip will drown. Rusty breaks away from McCleod. McCleod claims he has come to his senses, but he just lied to trick Rusty. Rinty breaks loose and attacks McCleod. With Rinty watching McCleod, they are going back for Masters. Rinty takes a rope to Masters, but McCleod has to use the horse to pull the rock loose. When he hears the dam blow, he uses the horse to free Masters. If Rusty told the truth about the dam; then maybe he told the truth about the civilian.

Masters gets to shore just in time. McCleod will serve time in the guardhouse, but eventually he will be returned to active duty.

Note that Lee Van Cleef played Ed McCleod.
