Frank Albertson (playing Colonel Watson) unfortunately never had the chance to see this on TV as he had died in Santa Monica about 2 1/2 months prior to this airing.
This episode features the final appearance of Gomer Pyle in this series, though the previous episode "Back to Nature" was his final appearance of being onscreen with Barney Fife.
When Andy walks into where Sergeant Carter is dining with other Marines, the song from composer Earle Hagen, "Harlem Nocturne" is playing on the jukebox. This is the same song which was used for the theme for The New Mike Hammer (1984).
When Gomer arrives at the Camp Wilson base near Wilmington, North Carolina, he joins the other recruits. They're standing in front of a building that has a staircase on the right, and a landscaped area in front. This exact building and its environs were used throughout Gomer Pyle: USMC (1964), which took place at fictional Camp Henderson in Southern California; there, it was the location of Colonel Gray, and other high-ranking officers', offices.
Although Gomer has Andy drive him to Camp Wilson somewhere near Wilmington, and the new spinoff show takes place at a fictional Camp Henderson in California, Jim Nabors didn't have far to travel, since the sets for the new show were built just across the street from Wally's filling station on the backlot.
