- Tim Brennan: They might have been here after Comanche here.
- Annie Oakley: He's a lot of horse all right. Comanche's worth a lot of money. Best racer west of the Mississippi. Never lost a race yet. Either in a quarter or five miles.
- Tagg Oakley: Wotcha reading, Windy?
- Windy Smith: Book.
- Tagg Oakley: Shucks, I can see that. But what's this one about?
- Windy Smith: Highwaymen.
- Tagg Oakley: Outlaws?
- Windy Smith: Nope. Old time English highwaymen.
- Tagg Oakley: Any good?
- Windy Smith: Yep.
- Tagg Oakley: You don't much like talking, do you, Windy?
- Windy Smith: Nope. Too much gabbing oil. Good thing to remember.
- Tagg Oakley: Gosh, how am I gonna learn anything if I don't talk to people?
- Windy Smith: By listening, by reading books.
- Henchman Calaveras: But a hundred miles in one night? 50 up and 50 back. I dunno.
- Tim Brennan: The fella in the book did it, didn't he? My alibi's gonna be better than his.
- Henchman Calaveras: You're the boss.
- Annie Oakley: But you were so sure you were gonna stay there.
- Windy Smith: Yeah, I thought so but old Pop Brennan never give me nothing in writing. Except maybe that letter.
- Annie Oakley: What letter?
- Windy Smith: It came just before old Pop died. But I was reading a book and just kinda never got 'round to reading the letter.
- Tim Brennan: Grandpa sure fixed me up fine, leaving this rathole while Bob gets the mine and the store in MasonCity.
- Henchman Calaveras: I tell you, if I was you, I'd tell the Law that it was my cousin that was gunning for me. Let them take him.
- Tim Brennan: That's not very smart, Calaveras, Grandpappy's will leaves me everything when Bob cashes in. If the Law knew we were feuding, I'd be the first one they'd grab when he gets knocked off.
- Sheriff Stokes: I can't arrest a man because I thought he read a book.
- Annie Oakley: You could if you broke an alibi and proved the ride could be made.
- Sheriff Stokes: I don't know the horseflesh that could do it.
- Tagg Oakley: I do.
- Annie Oakley: And so do I, Tagg.
- Henchman Calaveras: Annie, you're not thinking of making that ride?
- Annie Oakley: Why not? If Comanche can do it, Target certainly can. And, Lofty, if Brennan is a cold-blooded murderer, it's up to us to prove it.
- Windy Smith: Kinda late to be calling but Jesamine ain't no racehorse.
- Henchman Calaveras: Anything wrong?
- Windy Smith: Well, I dunno. But Brennan's men been hanging 'round my place. And it might be they heard Tagg telling me about Annie riding to Mason City.
- Henchman Calaveras: If Brennan knows that much, he can guess the rest. He'll try to bushwhack Annie.
- Sheriff Stokes: Yeah, but where?
- Tim Brennan: You just getting up?
- Annie Oakley: Yes.
- Tim Brennan: Then you couldn't have seen Comanche. That rascal broke out of his corral last night.
- Annie Oakley: Aw, that's too bad. If I see him, I'll let you know. How's the ankle?
- Tim Brennan: Pretty painful. Between it and Comanche, I didn't get much sleep last night.
- Annie Oakley: This makes me kinda late to break that alibi.
- Henchman Calaveras: You may not have broken it, but you sure have sprained it, a lot more than Brennan did his ankle.
- Tagg Oakley: Why do horses have to be fed so early in the morning?
- Annie Oakley: 'Cos they don't stay up after bedtime reading their books.
