- When Mr. Rumbold installs security cameras which deprive his department staff of any privacy, they decide it's time to retaliate.
- Due to recent shoplifting at Grace Brothers, Mr.Rumbold announces that the first floor will be a guinea pig for the new security cameras. But when the staff find out that Rumbold is watching everything they do, they take action to get rid of the cameras.—Nadia Nassar
- Shoplifting being on the increase, Mr Rumbold has live cameras installed and recruits Mr Clegg, formerly of CID, who searches the staff as they leave, yet only Rumbold accidentally has an item from stock. Watching everyone on CCTV from his office, Rumbold soon catches all the staff doing things they should hide better, but his secretary remarks the only thing lacking is a shoplifter, or the only apparent instance is the shop detective testing, who get knocked out. After finding their privacy ruined, the staff come up with a plan to make Mr Rumbold get rid of the cameras by making him believe the stress involved will kill him.—KGF Vissers
- As the sale day draws to a close, Mrs. Slocombe and Mrs. Brahms discuss advantages and disadvantages of old-fashioned long underwear. Mr. Lucas starts to leave when the floor clock says 5:30, but, as Captain Peacock's watch says it is a few minutes before 5:30, a confrontation arises. Mr. Humphries is called to be tiebreaker, but his watch is broken.
By the time they come up with a solution, it really is time to leave, so they all pack up and head out. However, Mr. Rumbold stops them and says he has an announcement. Captain Peacock has a party to get to, Mrs. Slocombe needs to go to the laundromat, and the rest of the staff are tired and want to leave. Accordingly, none of them are particularly cooperative as he explains that, due to a rise of shoplifting, he has had a CCTV system installed on their floor. If this experiment is successful, the other floors will receive the same treatment. The store has also hired Mr. Clegg, a former CID detective, to be the store's Head of Security.
The staff, unimpressed, try to leave again, but Mr. Clegg stops them to search their bags and suitcases and pockets for stolen goods, announcing this is going to be a regular routine now. He unearths some of the old-fashioned underwear in Mrs. Slocombe's bag, but it's bought and paid for. He also discovers that Mrs. Brahms keeps a spare bra in her bag and that Mr. Humphries carries an orange in his pocket to snack on. He finds a mask, striped shirt, and crowbar in Captain Peacock's bag but this turns out to be his costume for the party he's heading to. Finally, he finds a scarf in Mr. Rumbold's possession - still with price tag - that the floor manager picked up entirely by accident. Mr. Clegg marches him off to interrogate him, much to the glee of the staff.
The next morning, Mr. Mash helps the workmen set up the CCTV and asks Mr. Rumbold to demonstrate it for him, teasing him about his narrow escape from being arrested the night before. Mr. Rumbold waves the whole incident off as unimportant and eagerly shows off his new toy. As he shows the various camera angles available, and the fact that the camera also has sound, he happens to catch Captain Peacock in the act of patting Mrs. Brahms' backside, which shocks him. They also only narrowly escape having to watch Mr. Grainger take his false teeth out to get at a raspberry seed. Then, Mr. Mash spots smoke wafting into view on the camera - Mr. Rumbold changes the angle again, and spots Mr. Lucas smoking a cigarette behind a shelving unit. Furious, he excuses Mr. Mash from the room and demands Mr. Lucas come to his office so he can discipline him for breaking the rules. On his way out, Mr. Mash warns Mr. Rumbold that they'll have to fix the bathroom door in the bargain basement before they install cameras on the other floors.
Mr. Lucas manages to get off with just a reprimand when he explains he was stealing a smoke to calm his nerves - he has a big date with Miss Brahms coming up. However, Mr. Rumbold tells him he will not tolerate him smoking again. Mr. Lucas asks - outwardly sounding curious but with ulterior motives - if there is any area of the floor Mr. Rumbold can't see with the cameras. Mr. Rumbold demonstrates the wide area he can cover, shocking both of them when they accidentally catch Miss Brahms stuffing cotton wool down the bosom of her dress to make herself have a fuller chest, and therefore being slow to respond when Mrs. Slocombe calls her to tend to a customer.
Mr. Lucas returns to the floor and tells Mr. Humphries what he saw and heard, and soon word has spread across the floor that Mr. Rumbold can not only see them but hear what they are saying, and all the staff make their best effort to look good in front of the camera. Mr. Mash even tries to impress by putting on a suit, but because in order to be seen by the camera he has violated the policy of no workmen on the floor during business hours, this backfires. Meanwhile, Mr. Rumbold doesn't notice any of their efforts because, forgetting to look for shoplifters, he has started spying on the staff and is taking extensive notes on things he wants to reprimand them for.
Mr. Humphries suddenly spots an odd-looking mustachioed individual with a briefcase sneaking through the clothing racks, and alerts Mr. Lucas, who decides it's likely a shoplifter. He thinks he is proved right when the man puts a jacket in the case. The rest of the staff are alerted and, as Captain Peacock is hesitant to confront the man, Mrs. Slocombe attacks the man with a display bust, giving him a concussion. The blow knocks the mustache, which is false, off of the "shoplifter", revealing that it's Mr. Clegg. The Detective was doing an experiment with Mr. Rumbold to check how well the cameras were working. He is sent to the hospital, and Mr. Rumbold confronts the staff about the incident, as well as the laundry list of grievances he has made while spying on them.
After an extended tongue-lashing from Mr. Rumbold, the staff decide unanimously that the cameras have to go before Mr. Rumbold drives them crazy. Knowing he's a hypochondriac, Mr. Lucas, Miss Brahms, and Mrs. Slocombe cook up a plan to play on his fear, roping in Mr. Humphries to help. They start talking amongst themselves about how Mr. Rumbold looks pale and drawn and deathly sick, knowing he'll be watching and listening in. When he overhears them he sends for the doctor, who examines him, tells him that as long as he avoids smoking he should be perfectly healthy, and leaves. However, Mr. Lucas disguises himself as the doctor and after the doctor leaves stands with his back to the camera, talking to Mr. Humphries, and pretends to tell Mr. Humphries that he didn't tell Mr. Rumbold how sick he was because a sudden shock might have killed him. He asks if Mr. Rumbold has been under a strain lately and Mr. Humphries says he has been so glued to the television looking for "shoplifters" he has overstrained himself.
Hearing this, Mr. Rumbold hastily shuts off the camera, and in a panic orders the whole CCTV system to be uninstalled. Mr. Lucas and Mr. Humphries celebrate, but it's short-lived as the real doctor returns to say that he noticed Mrs. Brahms didn't look well and has diagnosed her with the measles, effectively ruining Mr. Lucas' plans to have a date with her. Mr. Humphries starts to ask him out for a drink, but then remembers Mr. Lucas kissed Miss Brahms and quickly runs off instead, afraid that Mr. Lucas might give the measles to him.
