Avatar Day
Seras111232 September 2021
This will probably be in top 5 or top 10 episode lists for this show. Yet another filler episode where the gang spends 20~ in a town that falsely dislikes the Avatar. As frustrating a usage of budget that may be to some, it pads out action by giving us a mostly comedy based episode and providing a in-universe history lesson. I would normally rail on episodes like these a lot harder in another show, but even unremarkable parts of Avatar don't phase me. They are mostly fun and still have something to offer.

Great humour, maybe even a few laughs (out loud!)

One of the many filler episodes and entirely skippable. However nuanced and clever side-story-telling (worthy of a triple hyphen) with a revisit to older characters.

Reminder of the realities of isolated folk; the fickle nature of the common people and unnecessary grudge-making or rather: "witch hunt culture".

I liked this episode, it was funny and Sokka at his best. Seeing as you're watching a children's cartoon, you should too!

Detective Sokka is Everything

Why is this episode so low rated? Do children just not get it? This is definitely one of the most hilarious episodes in the series so far. I was laughing out loud constantly. Extremely clever script. Sokka playing Sherlock Holmes was just amazing. Pure perfection here. It's a crime this is rated so low. An absolute crime!

Warning: Spoilers
This was a great episode full of laughs and surprises. While this has been classed as a filler episode I would disagree mainly because we learn a lot about the avatar kyoshi. All of Aangs past lives are important to the main story especially as kyoshi was fine with killing a man. So even story wise this episode shouldn't be skiped, but more importantly you wont want to because it is such a joy to watch

Underrated Episode

Warning: Spoilers
Those who have read my full series review (with heavy spoilers) know that I like it when the show acknowledges that it's sometimes necessary for the good guys to kill their antagonists. And (oddly enough for a mostly comedic episode), this episode is most definitely one of them.

Kiyoshi even says "I killed Chin the Conqueror" she doesn't say "oh, well, I technically didn't kill him" or "I'm not going to kill you but I don't have to save you either" she full-blown acknowledges that she killed him and that it was justified.

And since she killed him by causing him to fall from a precipice, when Aang knocks a Firebender off a cliff, we know the latter's dead. The good guys can kill their antagonists.

Beyond that, I like the comedy, (Sokka as Sherlock Holmes is hilarious), how Sokka and Katara are both smart characters and the Easter Eggs to the Warriors of Kiyoshi episode (including Sokka still being interested in Suki.)

That said, the best part of this episode is Zuko and Iroh's relationship. Zuko realizes (because his uncle tells him) that at this point even if he were to capture Aang, it would change nothing so Zuko gives up and embraces his career as a hardened the criminal, The Blue Spirit. (To paraphrase Shakespeare, what a noble soul here is o'erthrown.)

I like how Uncle Iroh suspects and tacitly expresses his disapproval of what Zuko's doing and Zuko responding to it by leaving Uncle Iroh behind and deciding to care only about himself is almost heartbreaking. It also makes me see more of what happens to Zuko (like we get in Zuko Alone.)

Honestly, this episode is woefully underrated.
