"Hair" introduces a new detective to the 12th, a loner transferred from narcotics named Gardeno (Michael Lembeck), whose long hair and heavy beard must go if he's to fit in the squad room (never seen again following this episode). Yemana introduces him to the washroom: "that explains the sign!" Wojo discovers that Gardeno, like himself, is a Vietnam vet: "well I guess you didn't have time to change since you've been back!" In his lone appearance since the filmed pilot, Henry Beckman plays a drunk, who responds to his one phone call, "you know anybody who delivers?" Newcomer Charles Fleischer, soon to play Carvelli on WELCOME BACK KOTTER (in only his second TV role), scores as a junkie/thief, a seeker of wisdom and truth: "I like to smoke while I seek!" Barney's wife Liz shows up with Fish's wife Bernice (Florence Stanley, second of six), who is shocked to find her husband returning from a scheduled appointment in a massage parlor that's already been busted three times (she's reassured he fell asleep on the table). Why didn't he ask her: "haven't I always told you, you rub me the wrong way?" Bernice made her next appearance in the episode "Fish" (played by Doris Belack), while Florence Stanley returned for "The Recluse."
