Howard Borden doesn't want his son Howie to become a stand-up comedian because it will "ruin his life". Bob Newhart started his entertainment career as a stand-up comedian in the late 1950s. His 1960 album "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart" was the first comedy album to reach number one on the Billboard Charts, and won the 1961 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. He would go on to have a very successful career as a comedian in many facets.
Bobby Ramnsen, who plays Mickey Melnick, was a successful stand up comedian.
Director Dick Martin had previously worked with Bob Newhart, Jack Riley, and Moosey Drier on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In." Moosey was a regular on that comedy show.
