Cheer Angels
This one can only be called a fun cheese fest, with a little bit of skin and a whole lot of silly plot. The Los Angeles Bulldogs football team have cheerleaders called the 'bow wows' and when one of them is kidnapped the Angels are hired to find out who's behind it. Thankfully Kelly and Kris are the ones chosen to go undercover as cheerleaders, and their outfits are remarkably similar to the Los Angeles Ram cheerleaders of the late 70s.
Kelly and Kris joke about how much skin is revealed by their costumes. They ace their tryout when Sabrina convinces two rival cheerleaders to strut and preen during their audition, which was frowned upon by team management. Sabrina works undercover as the cheerleader coordinator, because naturally a woman with zero such experience would be handed the cheerleader reins.
Veteran actress Fran Ryan plays the very strict and conservative team owner Bella Asher, whose son is sheltered and a possible nutcase.
Ben Davidson, a former football player in real life, plays the boyfriend of one of the kidnapped cheerleaders, and he plays the role like he's suffered permanent brain damage from concussions.
Lonnie Chapman plays Eddie Cobb, a marketing director who's also a religious fanatic. He takes quite an interest in the cheerleaders, and Kris and Kelly are no exception.
Bella's son Tim Asher fancies Kris and invites her out on a date. Let's just say the date doesn't go so well when Eddie Cobb shows up with a special potion for her post-dinner cup of coffee. It's soon after that we meet the kidnapped cheerleaders, taken to be part of a religious cult. Kris Munroe has the idea that it's time to kick some butt.
And this is where the episode gets really really weird. But it's certainly topical for the '70s, as religious cults were a huge thing, with Moonies and other nutters spreading their nonsense. Truthfully, it's complete camp but sometimes you just have to shrug your shoulders and say, "Okay, sure why not". Certainly If I were to start a cult it would feature as many cheerleaders as possible.
Out of all the Angels, Kris shines in this one, as she takes no guff from anybody. She seems to have more fight scenes than the other Angels. Occasionally she takes a beating but sometimes she doles out the punishment. Clearly there's no way a religious fanatic can best little Kris Munroe, pound for pound the toughest Angel!
