From Beer to Eternity (#4.9)

Warning: Spoilers
Cheers gang has a baseball game against another bar and they lose. The guy from that bar comes to make fun of them and Carla arranges a bowling competition. Turns out that Woody was a good bowling player but he doesn't want to compete as he injured somebody before. And then Diane comes and saves them by winning.

This was a pretty amusing episode. One of the few that take place outside of the bar for the most of the time. But the setting didn't change much in the great character dynamics.

The ending was unexpected, I was sure it will be Woody who will save them, but they managed to trick us and make it Diane instead.

Gary's First Appearance
Hitchcoc19 August 2019
The "Old Towne Tavern," we find out, is the chef rival of Cheers. They have routine competitions and Gary's always wins. The humor here involves a bowling match set up by Carla and Sam. It appears hopeless, but forces make it a possibility.

The Rivalry Begins
dgplatt-6012112 May 2024
This is the first and best episode to center on the rivalry between Cheers and Gary's Old Towne Tavern. The fact that it's the only one to feature Diane is part of it.

Cheers has always had its share of "villains" (Nick, Sumner, Andy Andy) but this is the first time the bar itself had a nemesis. Gary is a lovably obnoxious heel, taunting Sam and the gang the best he can. There's also the tension of whether Woody will step up and help win the bowling tournament.

In the end, it's the least likely character who saves the day (with an even less likely bit of trash talk). The old magic is still there, at least for now.
