- When Sam publicly supports an old teammate who has come out of the closet, Norm and the gang are afraid that "Cheers" will become a "gay bar."
- Tom Kenderson, Sam's old roommate from his Red Sox days, has just written his autobiography and is launching the book at Cheers since Sam is mentioned in it. Despite Tom asking Sam to read it before the book launch, Sam fails to do so. As the book is launched in front of a few reporters, Sam wishes that he had read it since Tom used the book as his way of coming out, which shocks Sam if only because Tom was a bigger womanizer than even him back then. Sam wants to be supportive of his old friend, but he is also deathly afraid of being construed as being gay himself. His support for Tom eventually wins out, which angers the regulars of the bar, who are afraid that Cheers will turn into a gay bar. Those regulars' concerns extend to being surrounded by what they assume will be stereotypically effeminate accoutrement around the establishment. They are also certain that they could spot a gay man a mile away, and as such they vow to scare off anyone who fits that mold. Sam has to decide whether to go along with them or risk alienating his bread-and-butter regulars. Diane is incredulous as to the regulars' assertions. Diane and a few new patrons show the regulars how right or wrong they really are.—Huggo
- An old teammate of Sam's who was an even bigger hound than Sam comes out with an autobiography in which he comes out of the closet. The news is doing an interview at the bar between Sam and his old teammate, he had asked Sam to read the book but Sam doesn't and gets a pretty big surprise on camera. Sam is shocked but excepts him and even poses for a picture in the paper with him. The next day Norm tells Sam of a gay bar that didn't used to be a gay bar but changed practically overnight after a gay group held some meeting there and how the same thing will happen at Cheers. Sam tells him that that wouldn't happen at Cheers Norm says that he is probably right after he scans the bar with his gaydar and declares that it's all clear. Diane surprised at Norm corrects him and says that there are two gay men in the bar, she says that she waited on them, and they told her along with how they like what Sam did. Norm takes another look around and sees two new costumers order light beer, him Cliff and some of the other guys decide to test if those men are gay by talking about sports and pointing out women and seeing if they react, they don't. Convinced that those are the gay men, first they try to get Sam to throw them out by as being the regulars threatening to leave. Sam is about to go through with it but stops at the last moment and explains that Cheers will never turn into the kind of bar that he has to throw people out of, and goes into his office. With Sam gone the guy decide to trick the two men out by saying that the bar is closing and they convince Coach. They all leave and Coach is closing up, Sam comes out of his office and asks what's going on Diane tells him as Norm and the others walk back into the bar. Then Diane tells them that those men weren't gay when Norm says that she is the one that said they were, Diane points out that she didn't say they were gay but that there are two gay men in the bar, then that the two men they chased out weren't gay and that in fact on of them tried to hit on her. Diane than tells them that the two men she was talking about are still in the bar and that they along with herself have had great pleasure in watching the rest of the guys make complete idiots of themselves. Norm than says he wants to know who they are and the two come forward and each give Norm a kiss on the cheek. Norm comments to that how everyone kisses better than Vera.—ricky
- Sam's old teammate Tom Kenderson is promoting his new book, and Sam has gladly allowed Cheers to be the place for a news conference regarding its release. Tom has asked Sam to read the book, but he forgets to do so. This becomes awkward when during the news interview with Tom, Sam is surprised to find out that his former teammate is gay. Unsure exactly what to do, Sam rushes off with Diane close behind. She the chastises Sam for running out on his friend this way. Sam then decides that he will stand by his friend...causing some in the bar to question Sam's attitude.
Sam and Tom both have their pictures run in the newspaper alongside an article about Tom's book. When a couple new patrons come into the bar talking about Sam's article, Cliff, Norm, and several others tell Sam that they are fearful that Cheers is going to become a gay bar. Overhearing their paranoia, Diane joins the conversation, and the guys claim they can spot if a person is gay or not. Putting their claim to the test, Diane explains that there are currently two gay men in Cheers. The group soon believe they have found their men, and demand Sam eject their suspects.
Sam instead takes them into the pool room, where the guys insist he kick the two men out. Instead, Sam refuses. When it seems that Sam has turned on them, the guys trick the two men into thinking the bar is closing for the evening.
After the two leave, the guys think they've won...only for Diane to admit that the two men they just kicked out were not gay. The guys are unsure just where these men are...only for the two to have been playing along with the gang all along. They playfully give Norm a kiss on the cheek, with Norm admitting they kiss better than Vera.
