Possibly the best of the bunch...
Quag77 February 2007
The whole gang is in this one (Richardson, Mayall, Edmonson, Planer, French, Saunders), and the script is tightly written. Lately, I've been watching all of the Comic Strip movies/shows, and this is definitely one of the better ones, and possibly the best one of all.

Very tight script, and the ending of this one is particularly imaginative, I thought. Plus, you get to see Rik Mayall completely wig out (over something that would wig anyone out), which is one of the great joys of television, in general.

Some of the Comic Strip movies/shows are a bit uneven, but this is one is solid all the way through. Highly recommended to any audience, including those who are a fan of these actors, as well as those who might be new to this bunch.

Why have these not been released on DVD in the States? I have no idea. The humor here is universal and accessible without being sanitized or insipid. It's what, ideally, you look for when looking across the Atlantic for humor.

This has been true of most of the things the Comic Strip folks have done. Though American fans of British comedy will no doubt enjoy this (the cast listing alone should interest any Britcom fan worth his or her salt), I think this kind of humor would appeal far more broadly beyond that niche.

The unwillingness to export stuff like this to the States (and promote it not as some kind of novelty British import, but as unqualified humor for humor's sake) under the assumption that it won't appeal over here, continues to tick me off.

The amount of garbage many of us have had to wade through to watch this and other semi-modern classic British television is, frankly, infuriating, and I know that I speak for a fair amount of us here when I say that.

I'm not one to slag all of American entertainment, because some of it is quite good, but I feel cheated when I am denied things such as this over some ridiculous cultural assumption about the kind of humor I'm likely to respond to - which is the only excuse I've ever heard from commercial interests who refuse to release this stuff in the US.

One of the best episodes.

Although I absolutely love this episode, the title is a bit of a stretch. They only spend six minutes in the car, I guess they couldn't think of a better title. But the title doesn't matter because the episode is hilarious.Four men who work for the same company but don't like each other are forced to drive to a conference together.Early into their trip, one guy gets sick and the CD starts skipping and gets stuck in the player. They put the sick guy in the trunk, one of them gets hit by a truck and they break the car trying to get the CD to stop. After that they are on foot.Of course there's a twist ending but I didn't really like it.They went with a Young Ones style ending because they realized there was no reasonable way out of the situation. But it's not really a bad ending, just not the way it should have been. This is a must see.

F-ing Brillitant!!
entrpy-314 October 2006
I read the review for this comedy sketch while trying to find somewhere to download it from. I may be exaggerating (end of the day, comedy is almost always personal preference) but, i personally think it is one of the funniest things i have ever seen.. Not even mentioning the sequel, 'Four Men in a Plane'... The classic comedians of the age at their best.. Bottom is wicked.. The young ones are wicked.. But this is top notch.. Pure quality all the way through.. Everyone i know who has seen it classes it as one of the funniest sketches ever.. I sometimes walk down the street and reminisce the sketches.. Start laughing and wet myslef.. People have called the authorities on me several times and i have to explain, sorry, i was just reminiscing a quality comedy.

Poo yourself hilarious!!

A few funny moments, one brilliant, the rest a drag
patchworkcat25 February 2006
Saw this at the time it was first broadcast. It's not great but the few minutes sequence when the car is in the lay-by is a work of brilliance- 7 years later and I still laugh when I think about. I'll put a bit more detail about that in the message board section to save putting a spoiler in...

There were other intermittent amusing moments but to be honest, the rest was a bit of a drag to sit through.

Extra appeal of course if you were an avid fan of the Comic Strip group but personally, while I am a great fan of Mayall and reasonably of Edmonson, I judge each of these Comic Strip pieces on it's individual merit.

Worth watching if it comes on TV (if only really for *that* moment) but it's not worth going out of your way to find/buy.

First half is some of the...

Funniest comedy I have ever seen come out of Britain.

The second half is a bit less convincing, although still amusing, but the first half is quite simply Edmondson, Mayall and Planer at their best with Richard putting in a good shift too.

Until the car gets smashed completely and it goes a little wobbly in the farmhouse the writing, acting, scripting, dialogue, direction and pace are absolutely perfect - for us slightly older ones who grew up back when these guys were at their pomp, it's crying with laughter-type stuff.

Perfect.

In fact, indestruuuuuctable.....
