Modern aircraft carry two "Black Boxes" (actually painted in orange for high visibility), the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR). The CVR has the last 30 minutes of flight time and the DFDR records numerous different system parameters throughout the whole flight to tell investigators what the aircraft was doing. These boxes are always shipped to the National Transportation and Safety Board headquarters in Washington D.C. to be opened and reviewed. Personnel on the scene of a crash do not have the equipment needed, or the authorization to open up the CVR, to listen to what the CVR might have on it.
