"He's not mad." "He's got a mean way of being happy."
Hey_Sweden25 December 2021
While Doc Cochran tends to the young survivor of the previous episodes' massacre, it becomes a possibility that the perpetrators of the massacre were actually "road agents" acting on behalf of Swearengen. Since Swearengen might not want the girl to say who did in her family, the Doc takes a vested interest in her safekeeping. Seth & Sol want to buy their lot outright from Swearengen, but he's frankly dubious about the two of them. He's afraid they might branch out into other ways of making money, like gambling, and thus become competition for him; he's also suspicious of the fact that they showed up in town the same time as Wild Bill, and suspects that the gunslinger is a silent partner in their business.

There is some truly first-rate acting in this terrific episode, especially from series regulars Brad Dourif (the Doc) and Robin Weigert (Calamity Jane). She, in particular, is ashamed at the way she wilted in the presence of Swearengen, always thinking that she was tougher than that. She even entertains the notion of gunning him down! Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane are excellent as Seth and Swearengen have an intense confrontation in the latters' saloon. Meanwhile, Brom (Timothy Omundson) has lost his enthusiasm for gold mining, and tries to go to Farnum to ask about the latters' interest in buying up his claim - only for Farnum to weasel out of the situation by claiming that he was drunk when he made the offer.

The series continues to be well cast from top to bottom; here you can see a pre-stardom Nick Offerman as Tom Mason, brother of the man gunned down by Seth and Will Bill in the debut episode. Tom, naturally, wants revenge.

Vivid entertainment for 56 straight minutes.

Eight out of 10.

Pulled on all your heart strings
SleepTight66616 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Although the Pilot was very well done, the second episode pulled on all your heart strings and made the characters much more likable.

In this episode, I particularly love Doc Dochram and Calamity Jane. Both putting their lives at risk to save the little girl from Al.

The little girl's entire family was murdered by Al's men, and if the girl can identify them, it could get Al in trouble. Especially now with Wild Bill in camp, and the old Montana Sheriff; Seth Bullock.

This episode sets up some very interesting character relationships for the future. Al and Seth meet for the first time, and they cannot wait to get at each other's throats. It also shows Dan's loyalty towards Al, and that he would even kill a small child for him.

The acting by everyone was excellent, but Brad Dourif in particular stood out. I am surprised that he never won anything for this role.

Five stars for the second episode.

It is getting better
CursedChico3 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It is getting better. In the first episode , i could not be pulled. Now, it is more attractive for me.

We see the 1800s, where people in USA dont have toilets. Al uses his room as toilet as i saw from that scene.

Bill is increasing connections with Montana , also montana is doing same. It has mutual benefits for both.

Bill came to this town to find gold. It seems montana came to open a bank and in the end, earning money. But they have to fight for their lifes now

They wont be safe anymore. Probably they did not know about the german girl which jane and charlie rescued. They will support charlie and jane of course.

Bill said to montana that bill was sheriff in previous episode but everyone is scared of him. Maybe he was bad sheriff. I am not sure about montana.

Jane would have support of bill if he killed al in doctor's home , i dont understand how she was scared so much. She was worst before probably.

Anyway, it was nice episode. Al is strong, smart. Like montana. It will be a nice season.

This was the episode that SOLD me, big time...
theShape0230 June 2009
Everything about this episode was fantastic. A great, great variety of different types of actors, as well as some brilliant storytelling make this episode as good as, if not better, than any old western film you can think of. Is it vulgar and disgusting at certain parts? YES. Watching this show makes you really feel how it was to live back then, in this lawless, defiant, sinful town that is growing more rapidly by the day. And seeing the whores of Swearengen's "Gem Saloon" makes it even more accurate, since thats what real people look like naked. Not this Hollywood lyposuction plastic surgery anorexic day.. The camps unspoken leader, Mr. Al Swearengen, is nothing short of breathtaking every scene he is in.. His character commits some HORRIBLE acts in this episode, yet I cannot help but like the guy. The episode picks up where the first one left off, and progresses the story in a way that leaves you feeling uneasy. Also I might ad, that you don't have to enjoy Westens to like this show.. The characters of this show go through a lot of the SAME problems we go through today.. It's just great seeing how people lived.. nobody in Deadwood takes a shower/bath for granted.. nor a good meal, alcohol, opium, etc.. But do yourself a favor, give this a chance.. this show is very rewarding to watch.. the dialog is diverse for a reason.. there are many different types of people coming to this town to make their fortunes.. From braindead miners, who can barely talk, read or write, to intellectual businessmen, to vicious thugs, to sweet innocent preachers and doctors.. this wide range in people would make their dialog to one another very very diverse.. but you start to understand it and its great.... So if you're sick of most CRAP on TV now.. watch this series... you'll later hate me for turning you on to it when you find out they cancelled it after season 3.. Way before its time..

A mean way of being happy
slak96u2 April 2023
Tensions rise between the various factions in town, including the rival saloon owners Al Swearengen and Cy Tolliver, as well as the newly arrived lawman Seth Bullock and his partner Sol Star. The interpersonal conflicts and power struggles are portrayed in a nuanced and compelling manner, with each character having their own motivations and secrets.

The cinematography and production design are also noteworthy, with the muddy streets and ramshackle buildings of Deadwood creating a convincing and immersive setting. The performances are uniformly excellent, with Ian McShane's Al Swearengen standing out as a particularly memorable and captivating character.
