When the designing women became dreamgirls!
mark.waltz18 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's the meeting of Etienne's parents (Della Reese and Sherman Helmsley) and Anthony's grandmother (Beah Richards), as well as Bernice's continued resentment that Anthony has married someone she disapproves of. Reese (making her entrance sobbing after separating from her husband) may look fierce and commanding, but her character is as gentle as a lamb, hysterically so. Richards, who had earlier played the 102 year old Minnie Belle Ward in the classic New Years Eve episode, takes over the part of Anthony's grandmother, a very formidable woman, upset over the fact that the wedding is a renewal of vows for family's sake. While funny as always, Alice Ghostley's character of Bernice is completely out of control, showing a bit of inconsistent behavior from her nutty usual self to be over the top. Some rather forced plot twists makes this a very odd episode, rushing lots of exposition into a single episode. A Suzanne mention shows how much Delta Burke was misses, while the four women's repetitive breaking into a girl group song has Dixie Carter getting to show a lighter side as the prim and proper Julia.
