THE DETECTIVES – Shadow of his Brother - 1961
This one is episode 70 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.
Detectives, Tige Andrews, Mark Goddard, Adam West and Robert Taylor are having dinner at a popular café. They all have a rare night off and are all meeting later to take in a few frames of bowling. Taylor heads off early to finish a bit of paperwork before the games.
Watching the Detectives eat and talk has been Martin Landau. When Taylor leaves, Martin grabs the waitress, Sandra White, and hands her a small notepad. He points at the door and says the man who just left drooped it. White runs out to catch Taylor in the parking lot. Taylor says the pad is not his.
Now Landau steps out of the darkness and sticks a gun to Miss White's head. He tells Taylor to behave himself and points at a car. Landau and White climb in the back while Taylor is ordered to take the driver's spot. Landau has Taylor hand over his service weapon before telling him to drive.
Taylor asks what exactly is going on. He asks Landau to release the woman, White and just use him as a hostage. Landau laughs and says that Taylor only has an hour to live. Miss White is just added insurance in case things go wrong.
Taylor it seems, had led the Detectives who had sent Landau's brother to death row on a murder beef. The brother is getting the chair that night in one hour's time. Landau intends to kill Taylor one minute later.
Landau then admits that it was he, who really killed the man his brother was sent up for. Landau though is too much of a heel to take the fall for his crime. He intends to have his revenge on Taylor. While all this is going on, Andrews, West and Goddard have discovered Taylor's car is still at the Café parking lot. They know something must be rotten in Denmark and start looking for clues. Soon a witness or two pop up who saw Taylor drive off. Soon a plate number is dug up and the Police are hot at the scent.
The car is soon traced to Landau, who they realize is the brother of the man about to have a long fall with a short piece of rope. An address is quickly found and the boys spare no horses as they pull off the old nick of time save. Landau collects a piece of lead in his shoulder and is hustled off to jail. Taylor contacts the prison and stops the execution of the wrong man.
This one is a very well done episode, with plenty of suspense throughout. The man in charge was actor, turned director, Richard Carlson. Carlson is best remembered from his roles in the films, THE SOUND OF FURY, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE and THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. His television roles include the leads in MACKENZIE'S RAIDERS and I LED THREE LIVES.
