The diff'rent Strokes episode "The Girls School" (episode 24 of season 1 ) was the pilot for the spin-off "The Facts of Life" (1979).
Although in this episode, the girls' academy is called "Eastlake", when the spin-off "The Facts of Life" premiered later that fall, which was set at the school, the name of the academy was changed to "Eastland."
Mrs. Garrett bonds with the girls at Eastlake Academy, the school Kimberly attends.

So I am thinking that Mrs. Garett got a job at the girls academy right when Kimmerbly was quiting and trasfering schools..
