The American Medical Association's (AMA) official stance on physicians writing prescriptions for family members is that while they are allowed to do so, they should not take on the role of being a primary caregiver for family, as that can cause issues with judgment and bias, prescriptions written to family should only be for one-time or urgent cases. Also the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) highly discourages physicians from prescribing controlled substances to family members, unless it's an emergency; if a physician's prescribing records are audited by the DEA a great deal of scrutiny will be directed at controlled substance prescriptions written to family members. In addition many states have laws that specifically prohibit physicians from prescribing controlled substances to immediate family members; and of course a physician cannot prescribe themselves medications.
