- Hoshi Sato is contacted by a 400-year-old telepathic alien exiled on planet in the Expanse, shunned by his society because of his abilities. The alien offers to use his powers to help Enterprise find the Xindi and the weapon they are building, but only if Hoshi will stay with him while he works. She agrees to stay behind, while Enterprise confirms the Expanse has a second Sphere and is on its way to investigate.—Meribor
- Sub-Commander T'Pol, examining gravitational anomaly patterns, calculates the location of a second sphere within the Delphic Expanse, and Enterprise diverts course to investigate. T'Pol says that the anomalies occur where the waves from the 2 sphere cross each other, but to create an accurate map, they need the Gravimetric readings from the 2nd sphere. Meanwhile, Ensign Sato is contacted telepathically by Tarquin (Maury Sterling), an alien that appears to her in human form. Tarquin says that he can help with the search of whatever it is that Sato is looking for. He shows her the location of his planet and invites her. Sato convinces Archer that Tarquin could help them with the search of the Xindi.
Enterprise soon arrives at Tarquin's planet. He welcomes Archer and Hoshi and explains that he can telepathically read objects, and suggests that Enterprise bring him a Xindi object (Using the imprint of the Xindi, he will try and figure out where the Xindi are building the weapon to destroy Earth); they give him part of the weapon used to attack Earth. He adds a condition: he will only help them if Sato agrees to remain with him while he works. They reluctantly agree (Sato says she can take care of herself), and Enterprise departs to investigate the second sphere. Tarquin and Sato discuss many subjects (Tarquin says he was banished from his home system as his telepathic abilities were considered a threat to the rest of the population) and initially the alien seems trustworthy. She also discovers that he had been watching her telepathically for some time and that she is not the first person to be brought here to provide companionship for him; the graves of four earlier companions lie outside his home (The last one died more than a century ago). Tarquin admits that he is over 400 yrs old.
Meanwhile, Enterprise approaches the sphere, but has to halt its approach due to damage (there is a hull breach and 3 subsections of the ship are decompressed) from the spatial anomalies generated by it (The 2nd sphere is much more powerful than the first one). The ship sends down a shuttle-pod insulated with Trellium-D, and is able to approach close enough to take readings. The sensors of the shuttle were damaged, so Archer decides to land on the sphere and conducts an EV to fix the sensors. Archer and Trip return to Enterprise and set course to retrieve Sato.
Meanwhile, Tarquin attempts to trick her into staying with him permanently (He argues that Sato is just fearful of the unexpected and is ignoring what Tarquin can offer her) (Later he appears to Sato as Archer and says that Tarquin has agreed to carry on his work, but only if Sato stays with him), but she refuses (She sees through the deception and knows that it is only Tarquin posing as Archer) and threatens to destroy a device which enhances his telepathic abilities (When Tarquin tells Sato that he will destroy the Enterprise if she does not agree to stay with him). He reluctantly agrees to let her go, and later provides Enterprise with the co-ordinates for the Xindi colony that is building a part of the weapon. T'Pol's analysis reveals that there are at least fifty spheres in the expanse region (They speculate that the spheres were created specifically for the expanse).
