Guest star Robert Pine is the father of Chris Pine who would later go on to play James T. Kirk in the rebooted Star Trek (2009) movie, as well as in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016). The elder Pine had previously appeared in The Chute (1996), but is best known for his role on CHiPs (1977), which also featured future Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) actor Michael Dorn.
The exterior San Francisco street scenes were shot on Paramount Pictures' New York Street backlot, which has appeared numerous times throughout Star Trek.
This episode marks the first time the interior of a Vulcan ship is shown.
This is the first reference, in Star Trek: Enterprise and chronologically, to pon farr, though it is not named on this occasion. Kov states that Vulcan males are driven to mate only once every seven years. Pon farr was introduced in Amok Time (1967).
This is the only reference in Star Trek to V'tosh ka'tur. However, it has been speculated that Sybok from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) was part of the same movement. Yet another group of radicals, the Syrrannites, were introduced in Awakening (2004); their movement proved to be a little more successful.
